Origins of Acid-Gas Stability Behavior in Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks: The Unique High Stability of ZIF-71

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are promising materials for industrial process separations, but recent literature reports have highlighted their vulnerability to acid gases (e.g., SO 2 , CO 2 , NO 2 , H 2 S), often present in practical applications. While previous work has documented the widely varying stability behavior of many ZIFs under varying (humid and dry) acid gas environments, efforts to explain or correlate these experimental observations via empirical descriptors have not succeeded. A key observation is that ZIF-71 (RHO topology) is an extraordinarily stable ZIF material, retaining both structure and porosity under prolonged humid SO 2 exposure whereas many other well-known ZIFs with different linkers and topologies (such as ZIF-8) were shown to degrade. Through a combination of hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) based methods and statistical mechanical models, we successfully explain this important experimental observation via atomistic investigations of the reaction mechanism. Our holistic approach reveals an ~9 times lower average defect formation rate in ZIF-71 RHO compared to ZIF-8 SOD, leading to the conclusion that the observed experimental stability of this material rises from kinetic effects. Moreover, our analysis reveals that differing stability of the two materials is determined by the distributions of acid gas molecules, which is difficult to capture using empirical descriptors. Furthermore, our results suggest wider applicability of the present approach, toward identifying tuned functional groups and topologies that move the acid gas distributions away from more reactive sites and thus allow enhanced kinetic stability.

Double Perovskite Interlayer Stabilized Highly Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Metal halide perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology has an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 26.1% and demonstrates cost-effective manufacturing. However, the stability of these PSCs poses a significant challenge, hindering their widespread manufacturing and commercialization. To tackle the degradation issue inherent in PSCs, surface passivation techniques, particularly employing a thin layer of two-dimensional (2D) perovskites, create a 2D/3D heterostructure. Beyond this, the exploration of metal halide double perovskites adds a new dimension to the chemical and band gap phase space of materials for optoelectronic applications. In this study, we leverage a wide band gap double perovskite interlayer to enhance the stability of 3D metal halide perovskite. Specifically, the double perovskite nanoparticle Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 , with its substantial band gap of 2.2 eV and exceptional air stability, is utilized. Through optimization, a Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 -treated PSC achieves an open-circuit voltage of 1.12 V and an impressive PCE of 19.52%. Additionally, the Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 passivation layer proves to be effective in bolstering the stability of PSCs. This work demonstrates an additional strategy and design motif to simultaneously increase the PCE of PSCs along with achieving improved stability.

Dual‐Gradient Construction on Li‐Rich Cathodes for High Stability Lithium Battery

Abstract The practical applications of high‐energy Li‐rich layered oxides (LLOs) have been hindered by the severe performance degradation including voltage decay and capacity fading. The gradient construction toward high‐activity interior and high‐stability exterior, typically realized by gradually changed transition metal (TM) gradient in LLOs, can alleviate the performance degradation to certain degrees. In this study, a gradient design of Al/Mg dopants is demonstrated for the TM‐gradient LLOs to further harmonize the high‐activity interior and high‐stability exterior, thereby forming the dual (TM and doping) gradient. As a result, superior capacity retention of 86% and a minor voltage decay of 0.54 mV cycle −1 are achieved at 1 C after 300 cycles. The improved electrochemical stability of the dual‐gradient LLO is attributed to the enhanced surface stability and suppressed bulk structure degeneration of LLOs upon electrochemical cycling. The dual‐gradient design serves as an important approach to fabricate high‐performance bulk LLOs toward applications.

Method and apparatus for implementing ultra-high stability stages with combined degrees of freedom for multiple axes of motion

A method and apparatus are provided for implementing an ultra-high stability stage with combined degrees of freedom for multiple axes of motion. The ultra-high stability stage includes a base, a driving wedge supported by the base and a following wedge supported by the driving wedge. The base and each wedge are formed of a selected stable material having predefined rigidity and low thermal expansion coefficient. Integrated air bearings, respective driving mechanics associated with each of the wedges and guiding components having selected degrees of freedom enable movement about multiple axes of motion, such as X, Y, Z translation axes, and rotation X and rotation Y axes. Another ultra-high stability stage with combined degrees of freedom for multiple axes of motion includes an intermediate wedge between the driving wedge and the following wedge to enable additional movement about a rotation X axis.

Record-high stability and compactness of multiply-charged clusters aided by selected terminal groups

Multiply-charged clusters with compact sizes that are stable in the gas phase are important due to their potential applications as weakly-coordinating ions and building blocks of bulk materials. However, the number of these clusters, especially those with high charge states beyond two, is limited. In this work, we show that gas-phase di- and tri-anions with record-high stability and compactness can be developed by utilizing a series of stable mono-anions with linear configurations as ligands. A stable di-anion with a record-high second electron binding energy of 6.26 eV and the smallest tri-anion with a record-low radius of 4.85 Å have been identified. This study demonstrates that multiply-charged clusters with highly charged state and compact sizes can be stabilized solely by selected terminal groups in the structure. This finding significantly enriches the database of stable multiply-charged gas-phase clusters and provides a path towards rational design of further multiply-charged species.

Evaluation of high-stability optical beats in laser chaos by plasmonic photomixing

The stability of optical beats in a chaotically oscillating laser is compared to that of a free-running continuous-wave laser using a highly efficient plasmonic photomixer. Using a chaotically oscillating laser diode, stable optical beats are observed over an operation current range of 60-90 mA. The optical spectra are stable even with frequent mode hopping. In contrast, optical beats in a free-running continuous-wave laser are not stable compared to those of a chaotically oscillating laser, because of intermittent hopping of the laser modes. The high stability of chaotically oscillating lasers makes these lasers promising candidates for optical pump sources in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy systems.

Surface regulation enables high stability of single-crystal lithium-ion cathodes at high voltage

Abstract Single-crystal cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries have attracted increasing interest in providing greater capacity retention than their polycrystalline counterparts. However, after being cycled at high voltages, these single-crystal materials exhibit severe structural instability and capacity fade. Understanding how the surface structural changes determine the performance degradation over cycling is crucial, but remains elusive. Here, we investigate the correlation of the surface structure, internal strain, and capacity deterioration by using operando X-ray spectroscopy imaging and nano-tomography. We directly observe a close correlation between surface chemistry and phase distribution from homogeneity to heterogeneity, which induces heterogeneous internal strain within the particle and the resulting structural/performance degradation during cycling. We also discover that surface chemistry can significantly enhance the cyclic performance. Our modified process effectively regulates the performance fade issue of single-crystal cathode and provides new insights for improved design of high-capacity battery materials.

High stability of flexible perovskite transparent conductive oxide film via van der Waals heteroepitaxy

Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), such as indium-tin oxide (ITO) and indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO), are essential components in the design of flexible optoelectronic devices. However, it is still a challenge to prepare low-cost flexible transparent conductive film for achieving the flexible functionality together with high optical transparency and electrical conductivity. Herein, fluorphlogopite (mica) is selected as the bendable and transparent substrate for the fabrication of low-cost perovskite CaVO 3 TCO epitaxial film. Benefitting from thin mica substrate with high Young’s modulus of 200 GPa, flexible CaVO 3 TCO epitaxial film exhibits high mechanical stability in terms of electrical conductivity and optical transparency after bending up to 10 5 cycles. The change of resistance can reflect the bending curvature and strain state. Finally, our results provide a new pathway to design superior mechanical flexibility and stability CaVO 3 TCO films for application in flexible, light-weight, and portable smart optoelectronic devices.

Unblocking Oxygen Charge Compensation for Stabilized High‐Voltage Structure in P2‐Type Sodium‐Ion Cathode

Abstract Layered transition‐metal (TM) oxides are ideal hosts for Li + charge carriers largely due to the occurrence of oxygen charge compensation that stabilizes the layered structure at high voltage. Hence, enabling charge compensation in sodium layered oxides is a fascinating task for extending the cycle life of sodium‐ion batteries. Herein a Ti/Mg co‐doping strategy for a model P2‐Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 cathode material is put forward to activate charge compensation through highly hybridized O 2 p TM 3 d covalent bonds. In this way, the interlayer OO electrostatic repulsion is weakened upon deeply charging, which strongly affects the systematic total energy that transforms the striking P2–O2 interlayer contraction into a moderate solid‐solution‐type evolution. Accordingly, the cycling stability of the codoped cathode material is improved superiorly over the pristine sample. This study starts a perspective way of optimizing the sodium layered cathodes by rational structural design coupling electrochemical reactions, which can be extended to widespread battery researches.

Multifunction Hydrophobic Ligand Engineered Cd(S, Se)/ZnS Quantum Dots for Stabilizing Highly Efficient Carbon‐Based Perovskite Solar Cells

The long-term operational stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) remains a key challenge impeding their commercialization, particularly due to ambient environments (e.g., moisture, oxygen, heat)-induced degradation. Carbon electrode-based PSCs have emerged as cost-effective and relatively stable alternatives to metal electrode-based devices due to carbon materials' hydrophobic behavior, yet they still lag in both long-term durability and power conversion efficiency (PCE). In this work, an ultrathin hydrophobic ligand-modified core–shell Cd(S,Se)/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) capping layer is introduced as a multifunctional interfacial modifier for carbon-electrode-based PSCs. This oleic acid ligand-modified QDs capping layer exhibits inherent hydrophobicity, effectively serving as a moisture barrier to retard perovskite degradation under ambient conditions. Furthermore, the strong interfacial bonding between the QDs and perovskite halide surfaces leads to efficient trap state passivation, reducing trap density and creating a more uniform electrical contact. The modified QDs/perovskite interface also features an elevated conduction band edge, promoting improved charge extraction. As a result, devices incorporating this quantum dot capping layer retain 98% of their initial PCE after 450 h of ambient aging and achieve a champion efficiency of 20.74%. As a result, this strategy highlights the potential of hydrophobic ligand-modified chalcogenide QDs as surface modifiers to enhance both the stability and performance of carbon-based PSCs, offering a promising route toward scalable fabrication of durable perovskite solar modules.

High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries with High Stability Derived from Titanium-Oxide- and Sulfur-Loaded Carbon Spherogels

This study presents a novel approach to developing high-performance lithium-ion battery electrodes by loading titania-carbon hybrid spherogels with sulfur. The resulting hybrid materials combine high charge storage capacity, electrical conductivity, and core-shell morphology, enabling the development of next-generation battery electrodes. We obtained homogeneous carbon spheres caging crystalline titania particles and sulfur using a template-assisted sol-gel route and carefully treated the titania-loaded carbon spherogels with hydrogen sulfide. The carbon shells maintain their microporous hollow sphere morphology, allowing for efficient sulfur deposition while protecting the titania crystals. By adjusting the sulfur impregnation of the carbon sphere and varying the titania loading, we achieved excellent lithium storage properties by successfully cycling encapsulated sulfur in the sphere while benefiting from the lithiation of titania particles. Without adding a conductive component, the optimized material provided after 150 cycles at a specific current of 250 mA g -1 a specific capacity of 825 mAh g -1 with a Coulombic efficiency of 98%.

A custom high-stability pulse generator for the test of a novel in-situ magnetic sensor developed to detect radiation damage in undulators

High-performance analog-to-digital converters (ADC) have been widely applied in many areas of science. For instance, magnetic field measurements based on the Faraday’s induction law require high-precision voltmeters to measure induced voltages. In this study in the context of free-electron lasers technology, the Magnetic Measurements Team at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory proposed a novel in-situ radiation damage detection system (RDDS) for detecting small field variations in undulators. The system measures the flux change in a flexible printed-circuit coil attached to the magnet array during the undulator gap movement. The gap movement changes the magnetic field, which induces a voltage signal in the coil that is measured and integrated with an ADC. Although the system is capable of detecting relative flux changes better than 100 ppm, drift in the ADC’s gain or offset can cause apparent changes in the relative flux. This paper describes the first attempt to developed a high-precision verification circuit to perform ADC testing in the framework of the novel RDDS. The circuit generates a reference voltage pulse with a voltage–time integral relative precision better than 50 ppm for a few hundreds of mVs — the typical order of magnitude measured with the RDDS. The circuit’s design combines a fast and precise switch with a low-noise voltage reference. Long-term measurements allowed statistical analysis and showed that averaging the voltage–time integral of ten pulses gives the required 50 ppm stability. Moreover, reproducibility tests confirmed that the circuit’s output is invariable under small power supply instabilities and equipment shutdown. Instruments and applications designed to quantify the magnetic field by integrating voltage signals may use the pulse generator proposed in this paper for verification purposes.

High-Accuracy and High-Stability Fiber-Optic Temperature Sensors for Coal Fired Advanced Energy

A research team at Michigan State University, led by Dr. Ming Han, has developed a revolutionary fiber-optic thermometer for use in next-generation coal-fired power plants. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, this new sensor is designed to measure extremely high temperatures with unmatched accuracy and long-term stability. Unlike conventional optical sensors that can give false readings due to mechanical strain and often drift out of calibration at high heat, this new technology uses a sealed gas chamber as its core. By measuring the temperature-dependent properties of the gas (air or argon), the sensor’s readings remain absolute and reliable, completely unaffected by the physical stresses on the surrounding equipment. The breakthrough design eliminates the need for complex and costly correction systems. It represents a fundamental shift in sensing technology, paving the way for a primary thermometer that maintains calibration and provides foundational accuracy essential for advanced energy systems.

Indolo[2,3- b ]quinoxaline as a Low Reduction Potential and High Stability Anolyte Scaffold for Nonaqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising stationary energy storage technology for leveling power supply from intermittent renewable energy sources with demand. A central objective for the development of practical, scalable RFBs is to identify affordable and high-performance redox-active molecules as storage materials. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a new organic scaffold, indolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline, for highly stable, low-reduction potential, and high-solubility anolytes for nonaqueous redox flow batteries (NARFBs). The mixture of 2- and 3-(tert-butyl)-6-(2-methoxyethyl)-6H-indolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline exhibits a low reduction potential (-2.01 V vs Fc/Fc + ), high solubility (>2.7 M in acetonitrile), and remarkable stability (99.86% capacity retention over 49.5 h (202 cycles) of H-cell cycling). This anolyte was paired with N-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethyl)phenothiazine (MEEPT) to achieve a 2.3 V all-organic NARFB exhibiting 95.8% capacity retention over 75.1 h (120 cycles) of cycling.

Constructing uniform oxygen defect engineering on primary particle level for high-stability lithium-rich cathode materials

Lithium-rich layered cathode materials are considered to be research focus of cathode candidates for next generation lithium-ion batteries due to their high specific capacity and low cost. However, lattice deoxidation associated with elemental migration and internal local shrinkage usually results in deteriorated cyclic performance and notorious voltage attenuation, severely limiting its application. In this paper, we have successfully injected uniform oxygen defects into surface region of Li 1.2 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 Mn 0.54 O 2 primary particles under the high-pressure and weak carbonate environment. Various experimental investigations indicate that the injected robust oxygen defects can not only mitigate detrimental interfacial reactions but also suppress unfavorable lattice variation and particle breakage. More importantly, theoretical calculations unravel the critical roles of oxygen defects in regulating energy band structure for strengthened anionic reversibility. Owing to stabilization effects of unique oxygen defect engineering, the modified Li 1.2 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 Mn 0.54 O 2 cathode has harvested dramatically enhanced electrochemical performance including a high initial coulombic efficiency of 96.6%, an outstanding capacity retention of 91.96% (1C, 200 cycles) and suppressed voltage decay of only 1.62 mV per cycle. Therefore, this facile and effective defect engineering strategy could establish new guidance for promoting practical application of Li-rich Mn-based cathode material.
