Effect of processing parameters on the characteristics of high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy

SEM, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and measurements of electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility, are presently used to characterize the influence of sintering temperature, sintering and annealing atmospheres, and quench-rate on the properties of the YBa2Cu3Oy superconducting oxide. It is established that annealing in oxygen, together with slow cooling rates, are required for preparation of high-Tc superconductors with sharp transitions; rapid quenching from high temperature does not yield good superconductors, due to low oxygen content.

Synthesis and characterization of high-Tc superconductors in the Tl-Ca-Ba-Cu-O system

Both Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3O10 and TlCa3BaCu3O8.5 are investigated for superconductivity as a function of the sintering temperature, time, atmosphere, and quench rate in an effort to synthesize the high-Tc superconducting phase in the thallium system. The samples are characterized by electrical resistivity measurements, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Samples of starting composition Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3O10 fired in air at 860-900 C and rapidly quenched show a Tc of 96-107 K. In contrast, specimens of starting composition TlCa3BaCu3O8.5 when baked at 900 C and slowly cooled in oxygen superconduct at 116 K and above and consist of Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3O(10+x) as the dominant phase. The results also show that, in contrast to the case of YBa2Cu3O(7-x), doping with a small concentration of fluorine sharpens the resistive transition and produces a large Tc increase in thallium-based superconductors.

Superconductivity in the high-Tc Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O system - Phase identification

Four phases are observed in superconducting Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O samples. The superconducting phase, with onset temperature near 120 K, is a 15.4-A-layered compound with composition near Bi2Ca1Sr2Cu2O9 and an A-centered orthorhombic unit subcell 5.41 x 5.44 x 30.78 A. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy data are consistent with a structure of alternating perovskite and Bi2O2 layers. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images reveal a b-axis superstructure of 27.2 A, numerous (001) stacking faults, and other defects.

Crystallography, chemistry and structural disorder in the new high-Tc Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O superconductor

Diffraction experiments are reported which indicate that the new Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O layer-structure superconductor possesses a primitive orthorhombic unit cell with probable space group Pnnn. The material exhibits severe structural disorder which is primarily related to stacking within the layers. The apparent orthorhombic structure is an average resulting from orthorhombic material mixed with monoclinic domains in two twinned orientations. Two distinct types of structural disorder that are common in materials synthesized to date are also described. This disorder complicates the crystallographic analysis and suggests that X-ray and neutron diffraction methods may yield only an average structure.

Systematic variation of magnetic-field penetration depth in high-Tc superconductors studied by muon-spin relaxation

The muon relaxation rate (sigma) was measured in the high critical temperature superconductors YBa2Cu3O(x) for x = 6.66, 6.95, 7.0, and La1.85 SrO.15 CuO4 in transverse external magnetic fields 1 is approximately 4 kG. A simple relation is found which connects the transition temperature T(c), the magnetic field penetration depth lambda(L), the carrier concentration n(s) and the effective mass m* as T(c) varies as sigma which varies as 1/lambda(L) squared which varies as n(s)/m*. The linear dependence T(c) varies as n(s)/m* suggests a high energy scale for the coupling between superconducting carriers.

Magnetism and electron pairing in high-Tc superconductors

Correlated wave functions are used for YBa2Cu3O(7-y) where epsilon(d)-epsilon(p) is about 0 for Cu3d- and 02p-electrons. The electrons are delocalized (metallic) for y less than 0.5 with weak and temperature-independent paramagnetism. In contrast, the systems are conventional antiferromagnetic insulators for y greater than 0.6 with a narrow y between 0.5 and 0.6 transition region. These results are in agreement with magnetic and neutron diffraction data.

Magnetic field penetration depth of La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 measured by muon spin relaxation

Muon-spin-relaxation measurements have been performed on a high-Tc superconductor La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4. In an external transverse magnetic field of 500 G, a magnetic field penetration depth of 2000 A at T = 10 K has been determined from the muon-spin-relaxation rate which increased with decreasing temperature below Tc. From this depth and the Pauli susceptibility, the superconducting carrier density is estimated at 3 x 10 to the 21st per cu cm. The zero-field relaxation rates above and below Tc were equal, which suggests that the superconducting state in this sample is not associated with detectable static magnetic ordering.

Nonaqueous chemical etch for YBa2Cu3O(7-x)

A nonaqueous chemical etch, with Br as the active ingredient, is described which removes the insulating hydroxides and carbonates that form on high-temperature superconductor surfaces as a result of atmospheric exposure. X-ray photoemission spectra have been recorded before and after etching YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films. It is found that, after the etch, the high binding energy O 1s and Ba 3d peaks associated with surface contaminants are greatly reduced, the Y:Ba:Cu ratio is close to the expected 1:2:3, and the oxidation state of the Cu(2+) is not affected. The resistance of an etched film reaches zero at 78 K, compared to 81 K for a similar unetched film. The suitability of other nonaqueous halogen-based etches is discussed, as is the applicability of this etch to other high-Tc superconductors.

An adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator for SIRTF

An adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) has been proposed to cool bolometric infrared detectors on the multiband imaging photometer of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). One such refrigerator has been built which uses a ferric ammonium alum salt pill suspended by nylon threads in a 3-T solenoid. The resonant modes of this suspension are above 100 Hz. The heat leak to the salt pill is less than 0.5 microW. The system has a hold time at 0.1K of more than 12 h. The cold stage temperature is regulated with a feedback loop that controls the magnetic field. A second, similar refrigerator is being built at a SIRTF prototype to fly on a ballon-borne telescope. It will use a ferromagnetic shield. The possibility of using a high-Tc solenoid-actuated heat switch is also discussed.

Construction and performance of a high-temperature-superconductor composite bolometer

A high-Tc superconducting bolometer has been constructed using a YBa2Cu3O(x) thin-film meander line 20 microns wide and 76,000 microns long, deposited on a SrTiO3 substrate. Radiation is absorbed by a thin film of Bi with well-characterized absorption properties deposited on a Si substrate in contact with the SrTiO3. At 1.8 Hz the measured bolometer response to a 500-K blackbody is 5.2 V/W (820 V/W extrapolated to dc). The impact of apparent nonohmic behavior at the transition is discussed, as are ways of reducing the observed 1/f noise. The response time is 32 s and is dominated by the heat capacity of the SrTiO3 substrate.

Processing and properties of high Tc oxide/silver matrix composite superconductors

This paper describes the processing conditions for the formation of strong flux pinning high-Tc (REE)1Ba2Cu3O7/AgO (RE-123/AgO) composites with the RE-123:AgO ratio of 3:1 and presents the magnetization and critical field data on these composites. The results obtained indicate that proper processing conditions are critical to the formation of strong flux pinning RE-123/AgO composites. Resistance measurements in a magnetic field show that the upper critical field in Y-123/AgO is about three times larger than that of the Y-123 compound.

High Tc composite silver/oxide superconductors

Factors involved in the strong flux pinning effect of high-Tc YBa2Cu3O7/AgO (Y-123/AgO) composite and other REE-123/AgO composites were investigated. Samples of superconducting REE-123 and REE-123/AgO (where REE was Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, or Y) were prepared and used to obtain magnetic moments, critical field, and microstructure data. The optimum heat treatment conditions for the formation of strong flux-pinning REE-123/AgO composites were found to be different for different REE-123 compounds. It was found that the annealing temperature depends on the ionic size of the REE, with larger rare-earth ions requiring higher temperature. It was also found that strong flux-pinning REE-123/AgO composites form only in a narrow annealing temperature range.

Microwave characterization of high-temperature superconducting thin films using stripline resonators

A method was derived for the extraction of the surface resistivity (Rs) of high-Tc superconducting (HTS) thin films at microwave frequencies, using a stripline resonator circuit. Surface resistivity values were calculated by measuring the difference in Q-values of a stripline resonator configuration when an HTS thin film was substituted for one of the metallic ground planes. Cryogenic tests were completed for several stripline resonator structures, yielding accurate predictions of the HTS thin-film performance at frequencies between 3 and 26 GHz (in harmonics of approximately 3 GHz). These results were then used to illustrate the dependence of HTS surface resistivity on frequency and temperature in the microwave frequency band.

Superconducting Bi(1.5)Pb(0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) ceramics by rapid melt quenching and glass crystallization

The preparation of superconducting Bi(1.5)Pb(0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) in the glassy state is described, and the results of a study of its crystallization kinetics are presented. The annealing parameters for transforming the glass into a superconductor containing a large fraction of the high-Tc phase were determined. It was found that prolonged annealing (longer than 10 days) in air at 840 C, followed by slow cooling, results in the Tc of 107.2 K and a sharp transition of 2 K.

High Tc superconducting IR detectors from Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films

A thin-film high-Tc superconducting multielement optical detector made of Y-Ba-Cu-O has been designed and evaluated using optical pulses from a diode laser (830 nm) and a Q-switched CO2-laser (10.6 microns). Different thin films have been tested. A laser deposited film showed the strongest response amplitude for short pulses and responded to an ultrafast, 50 ps wide pulse. Comparisons between dR/dT and response as a function of temperature indicated, however, a bolometric response.
