Information-Theoretic Aspects of Scrambling and Chaos

The goal of this overview talk on information-theoretic aspects of scrambling and chaos is to connect "out-of-time-ordered correlators" (OTOC) with as many "information-theoretic" quantities as we can, in hopes of better understanding what the OTOC actually measures. Recently published papers on this topic will include but not be limited to Styliaris, et al., PRL 126, 030601 (2021); Zanardi and Anand, PRA 103, 06224 (2021); and Anand and Zanardi, Quantum 6, 746 (2022).

Method for scrambling satellite communications

A secure communications system multiplexes segments of the information signal for keyed encoding and modulation onto a plurality of different carrier frequencies and/or polarizations, and transmits the encoded carriers to multi-channel signal summing receivers that decode the segments from all channels, to reassemble the information signal for use by authorized stations with a key. The use of the multi-channel link and the summing receiver allows the greatest number of different coding algorithms for accommodating the greatest number of discrete secure channels.

Serial-Turbo-Trellis-Coded Modulation with Rate-1 Inner Code

Serially concatenated turbo codes have been proposed to satisfy requirements for low bit- and word-error rates and for low (in comparison with related previous codes) complexity of coding and decoding algorithms and thus low complexity of coding and decoding circuitry. These codes are applicable to such high-level modulations as octonary phase-shift keying (8PSK) and 16-state quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM); the signal product obtained by applying one of these codes to one of these modulations is denoted, generally, as serially concatenated trellis-coded modulation (SCTCM). These codes could be particularly beneficial for communication systems that must be designed and operated subject to limitations on bandwidth and power. Some background information is prerequisite to a meaningful summary of this development. Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is now a well-established technique in digital communications. A turbo code combines binary component codes (which typically include trellis codes) with interleaving. A turbo code of the type that has been studied prior to this development is composed of parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCCs) implemented by two or more constituent systematic encoders joined through one or more interleavers. The input information bits feed the first encoder and, after having been scrambled by the interleaver, enter the second encoder. A code word of a parallel concatenated code consists of the input bits to the first encoder followed by the parity check bits of both encoders. The suboptimal iterative decoding structure for such a code is modular, and consists of a set of concatenated decoding modules one for each constituent code connected through an interleaver identical to the one in the encoder side. Each decoder performs weighted soft decoding of the input sequence. PCCCs yield very large coding gains at the cost of a reduction in the data rate and/or an increase in bandwidth.

Optical encryption interface

An analog optical encryption system based on phase scrambling of two-dimensional optical images and holographic transformation for achieving large encryption keys and high encryption speed. An enciphering interface uses a spatial light modulator for converting a digital data stream into a two dimensional optical image. The optical image is further transformed into a hologram with a random phase distribution. The hologram is converted into digital form for transmission over a shared information channel. A respective deciphering interface at a receiver reverses the encrypting process by using a phase conjugate reconstruction of the phase scrambled hologram.

Digital TV tri-state delta modulation system for Space Shuttle ku-band downlink

A tri-state delta modulation/demodulation (TSDM) technique which provides for efficient run-length coding of constant-intensity segments of a TV picture is described. Aspects of the hardware implementation of a high-speed TSDM transmitter and receiver for black-and-white TV or field-sequential color or NTSC format color are reviewed. Run-length encoding of the TSDM output can consistently reduce the required channel data rate well below one bit per sample. As compared with a bistate delta modulation system, the present technique eliminates granularity in the reconstructed video without degrading rise or fall times. About 40 chips are used by TSDM when used to handle the luminance information in a color link. A possible overall space and ground functional configuration to accommodate Shuttle digital TV with scrambling for privacy is presented.

Organic Products of Fatty Acid and Magnesium Sulfate Mixtures after Gamma Radiolysis: Implications for Missions to Europa

If ocean-derived materials are present at Europa’s surface, they would represent accessible records of ocean chemistry and habitability, but such materials would be further processed by the moon’s harsh radiation environment. In this study, saturated fatty acids were precipitated onto a Europa-relevant hydrated magnesium sulfate and exposed to gamma radiation doses up to 2 MGy at -196° C. Alkane chains, with carbon numbers one less than those of the starting fatty acids, were the most abundant radiolysis products in solvent and thermal extracts analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Detections of monounsaturated fatty acids and combined radiolysis products were attributed to the experiment’s Europa-like parameters. Additionally, elevated concentrations of shorter-chain saturated fatty acids suggest that gamma radiation induced charge remote fragmentation of the alkyl chains of some starting fatty acids under these experimental conditions. Quantitation of fatty acid concentrations in the irradiated samples enabled the calculation of a radiolysis constant that indicated exposure to a 5 MGy dose of gamma radiation would have resulted in a ~90% loss of the initial fatty acid population. The samples were further studied by Raman spectroscopy and laser desorption and ionization mass spectrometry, which characterized the distribution of fatty acids and their radiolysis products on sulfate surfaces. The substantial loss of starting fatty acids typically seen with increasing radiation dose, along with the remarkable diversity of radiolysis products identified, suggest that the detection of fatty acids in irradiated sulfate deposits on Europa will be challenged by rapid destruction of any initial fatty acid populations and scrambling of their residual signals by a myriad of organic radiolysis products. If missions to Europa encounter sulfate deposits, targeting minimally irradiated units may still enable the detection of surviving fatty acid signatures that could inform about Europa’s subsurface chemistry and habitability.

Parallel Information Processing (Image Transmission Via Fiber Bundle and Multimode Fiber

Growing demand for visual, user-friendly representation of information inspires search for the new methods of image transmission. Currently used in-series (sequential) methods of information processing are inherently slow and are designed mainly for transmission of one or two dimensional arrays of data. Conventional transmission of data by fibers requires many fibers with array of laser diodes and photodetectors. In practice, fiber bundles are also used for transmission of images. Image is formed on the fiber-optic bundle entrance surface and each fiber transmits the incident image to the exit surface. Since the fibers do not preserve phase, only 2D intensity distribution can be transmitted in this way. Each single mode fiber transmit only one pixel of an image. Multimode fibers may be also used, so that each mode represent different pixel element. Direct transmission of image through multimode fiber is hindered by the mode scrambling and phase randomization. To overcome these obstacles wavelength and time-division multiplexing have been used, with each pixel transmitted on a separate wavelength or time interval. Phase-conjugate techniques also was tested in, but only in the unpractical scheme when reconstructed image return back to the fiber input end. Another method of three-dimensional imaging over single mode fibers was demonstrated in, using laser light of reduced spatial coherence. Coherence encoding, needed for a transmission of images by this methods, was realized with grating interferometer or with the help of an acousto-optic deflector. We suggest simple practical holographic method of image transmission over single multimode fiber or over fiber bundle with coherent light using filtering by holographic optical elements. Originally this method was successfully tested for the single multimode fiber. In this research we have modified holographic method for transmission of laser illuminated images over commercially available fiber bundle (fiber endoscope, or fiberscope).
