Autonomous Inverter Controls for Resilient and Secure Grid Operation: Vector Control Design for Grid Forming

The project addresses both fundamental and practical challenges of GFM/GFL inverter control for the power grids with high inverter based resources (IBRs) penetration. A data- driven modeling technique is applied to accurately model dynamics of PWM inverters, including electromagnetic-transient (EMT). Systematic and integrative designs of grid- forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) primary controls are developed to guarantee system performance under either normal or abnormal operating conditions without violating constraints. This modeling and control framework provides black-start capability in case of an outage without relying on rotating generators, and its secondary control is also shown to enhance resilience against cyber-physical attacks.

UNIFI's Grid-Forming (GFM) Inverter Reference Design: A Tutorial on Modeling, Control, and Experimental Implementation of GFM Inverters

The UNIFI Consortium's tutorial on grid-forming (GFM) inverters provides a comprehensive guide to the modeling, control, and experimental implementation of GFM inverters. As the integration of renewable energy accelerates, the transition from traditional grid following (GFL) to GFM inverters is crucial to ensure stable and sustainable power systems. This document outlines a reference design for three-phase and single-phase GFM inverters developed at the University of Texas at Austin. The tutorial also provides step-by-step guidance for accessing and using UNIFI’s GitHub repository, enabling users to design, build, and test GFM inverters efficiently. By fostering collaboration and equipping users with accessible resources, this initiative aims to drive widespread adoption of GFM technology across academia, utilities, and industries.

BIL GRID-READY WIND: Reliable and Economical Grid Services Design, Implementation, and Demonstration at the Great Pathfinder Wind Power Plant

The GRID-READY WIND project aimed to demonstrate the ability of utility-scale wind power plants (WPPs) to deliver traditional and emerging grid services (GSs) in both grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) modes through a centralized control framework, supplemented by local control adjustments at the wind turbine generator as needed. Throughout the project, the team offered recommendations on how the grid services demonstrated with WPPs could be applied to other inverter-based resources (IBRs), such as photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery energy storage systems (BESS), while considering the unique dynamics of these resources arising from their energy generation characteristics. The project sought to enhance the confidence of system operators (SOs) and planners in utilizing WPPs, alongside other IBRs such as PV plants and BESS, to provide essential grid services over extended periods under diverse operating conditions, thereby supporting their integration into the bulk power system.

A Novel Design for Switchable Grid-Following and Grid-Forming Control

This paper presents the design of a novel grid- forming (GFM) control structure adapted from a typical grid- following (GFL) control structure with minimal edits, thereby enabling a switchable control structure for voltage sourced converters (VSCs) to operate in either GFL or GFM mode by simply switching a flag manually. The VSC is shown to be able to operate in the GFL control mode synchronizing to the main grid through a phase-locked-loop (PLL) and operate as a GFM controller with power-based synchronization for both grid-connected and islanded conditions. To guarantee smooth operation, the control schemes and the mode switching logic have been carefully designed and examined via a series of experiments. Here, the experiment results show that the switchable control structure can fulfill the desired control and operation functions and enable smooth transition between control modes.
