Molecular dynamics of the water liquid-vapor interface

The results of molecular dynamics calculations on the equilibrium interface between liquid water and its vapor at 325 K are presented. For the TIP4P model of water intermolecular pair potentials, the average surface dipole density points from the vapor to the liquid. The most common orientations of water molecules have the C2 nu molecular axis roughly parallel to the interface. The distributions are quite broad and therefore compatible with the intermolecular correlations characteristic of bulk liquid water. All near-neighbor pairs in the outermost interfacial layers are hydrogen bonded according to the common definition adopted here. The orientational preferences of water molecules near a free surface differ from those near rigidly planar walls which can be interpreted in terms of patterns found in hexagonal ice 1. The mean electric field in the interfacial region is parallel to the mean polarization which indicates that attention cannot be limited to dipolar charge distributions in macroscopic descriptions of the electrical properties of this interface. The value of the surface tension obtained is 132 +/- 46 dyn/cm, significantly different from the value for experimental water of 68 dyn/cm at 325 K.

Ultraviolet absorption spectra of mercuric halides.

The gas phase transitions of the mercuric halides were observed in the UV region by operating at temperatures above 400 K and at vapor pressures on the order of 0.5 mm. Spectral features exhibited by the chloride, bromide, and iodide of mercury correlate energetically with bands previously designated as intermolecular charge transfer transitions. The solution spectra of mercuric iodide and deep color of the crystals (if not due to some solid state interactions) indicate that this molecule may also have longer wavelength transitions.

Flow resolution and domain of influence in rarefied hypersonic blunt-body flows

The study assesses the effects of the upstream domain size and grid resolution upon flow properties and body aerodynamics computed for rarefied flows over cold blunt bodies with a direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) particle method. Empirical correlations are suggested for aerodynamic coefficients for two-dimensional flows past a perpendicular flat plate. Free-stream parameters which were varied in the study include the Mach number, Knudsen number, surface temperature, and intermolecular potential. Insufficient grid resolution leads to overprediction of aerodynamic heating and forces in the DSMC method. Solution accuracy correlates well with the Reynolds number defined at the wall temperature and the stagnation mean free path relative to the cell dimension. Insufficient upstream domain size in the DSMC method leads to overprediction of heating and drag. Errors in aerodynamic coefficients correlate well with the distance ahead of the body where flow temperature reaches half of its peak value. Simulation of a hard-sphere gas is more sensitive to grid resolution, while simulation of a Maxwell gas is more sensitive to upstream domain size.

Co-conservation of rRNA tetraloop sequences and helix length suggests involvement of the tetraloops in higher-order interactions

Terminal loops containing four nucleotides (tetraloops) are common in structural RNAs, and they frequently conform to one of three sequence motifs, GNRA, UNCG, or CUUG. Here we compare available sequences and secondary structures for rRNAs from bacteria, and we show that helices capped by phylogenetically conserved GNRA loops display a strong tendency to be of conserved length. The simplest interpretation of this correlation is that the conserved GNRA loops are involved in higher-order interactions, intramolecular or intermolecular, resulting in a selective pressure for maintaining the lengths of these helices. A small number of conserved UNCG loops were also found to be associated with conserved length helices, consistent with the possibility that this type of tetraloop also takes part in higher-order interactions.

Method for estimating solubility parameter

Semiempirical correlations have been developed between solubility parameters and refractive indices for series of model hydrocarbon compounds and organic polymers. Measurement of intermolecular forces is useful for assessment of material compatibility, glass-transition temperature, and transport properties.

Correlation of the rate of ultrasound propagation with other characteristic magnitudes of the liquid state

The application of ultrasonic radiation to the procedure for determining the physical properties of liquids is discussed. The basis for linking the kinetic properties of liquids to the equilibrium properties through the molecular structure and the potential of the intermolecular forces is defined. The test procedure using ultrasonic radiation is described. Results of tests with specified fluids are tabulated.

Intermolecular potential for thermal H2O-He collisions

Theoretical potentials for rotational excitation of H2O by He were constructed via several methods, all of which start with a large basis set SCF interaction. The semiempirical Hartree-Fock with damped dispersion model adds a damped long-range attraction with parameters adjusted to fit experimental total differential cross sections. Purely ab initio potentials add correlation energies obtained via perturbation theory (MP2 and MP4) or a variational method (ICF1). Scattering calculations were performed on all surfaces to compare wih available beam scattering and pressure broadening data and to assess sensitivity of state-to-state rates to uncertainties in the potential. From comparison with the limited experimental data, the ICF1 surface appears to be marginally better than the MP4 surface. Thermal rates calculated from this surface should be accurate to better than 50 percent, at least for the larger, more important rates.

Space environmental effects on polymer matrix composites as a function of sample location on LDEF

This paper presents results on the effect of circumferential location on the variation in solar absorptance (alpha(sub S)) and infrared emittance (epsilon) for five different polymer matrix composites (PMC), and variations in erosion depth due to atomic oxygen (AO) for fourteen different PMC materials. In addition, a chemical content design parameter (gamma) has been found that correlates well with the erosion yield obtained from space flight data and hyperthermal AO tests for hydrocarbon polymeric materials. This parameter defines the ratio of the total number of atoms in a repeat monomer unit to the difference between the total carbon content and the total number of intermolecular oxygen atoms in the same repeat unit.

Undercooling of materials during solidification in space

A theoretical research program was undertaken on the under cooling and solidification of materials under variable external field conditions. A catalog of theories and models of nucleation of solid phases in the melt is provided, as is a discussion of the relation of undercooling to intermolecular potentials, the dependence of growth rate on undercooling, the influence of undercooling on liquid-solid interface stability and solid structure, the direct effects of external fields on melts, the relation of solid physical properties to structure and the role of nucleants in solidification. Results of the theoretical analysis of several experiments related to the space processing applications program are given, and recommendations for future experiments and further theoretical developments along with procedures for correlation of theory and experiment are specified.

Dielectric Properties of Poly(ethylene oxide) from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The order, conformations and dynamics of poly(oxyethylene) (POE) melts have been investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. The potential energy functions were determined from detailed ab initio electronic structure calculations of the conformational energies of the model molecules 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) and diethylether. The x-ray structure factor for POE from simulation will be compared to experiment. In terms of conformation, simulations reveal that chains are extended in the melt relative to isolated chains due to the presence of strong intermolecular O...H interactions, which occur at the expense of intramolecular O...H interactions. Conformational dynamics about the C-C bond were found to be significantly faster than in polymethylene, while conformational dynamics about the C-O bond even faster than the C-C dynamics. The faster local dynamics in POE relative to polymethylene is consistent with C-13 NMR spin-lattice relaxation experiments. Conformational transitions showed significant second-neighbor correlation, as was found for polymethylene. This correlation of transitions with C-C neighbors was found to be reduced relative to C-O neighbors. Dielectric relaxation from simulation will also be compared with experiment.

Ab Initio Calculations of Anharmonic Vibrational Spectroscopy for Hydrogen Fluoride (HF)n (n=3,4) and Mixed Hydrogen Fluoride/Water (HF)n(H20)n (n=1,2,4) Clusters

Anharmonic vibrational frequencies and intensities are computed for hydrogen fluoride clusters (HF)n with n=3,4 and mixed clusters of hydrogen fluoride with water (HF)n(H2O)n where n=1,2. For the (HF)4(H2O)4 complex, the vibrational spectra are calculated at the harmonic level, and anharmonic effects are estimated. Potential energy surfaces for these systems are obtained at the MP2/TZP level of electronic structure theory. Vibrational states are calculated from the potential surface points using the correlation-corrected vibrational self-consistent field (CC-VSCF) method. The method accounts for the anharmonicities and couplings between all vibrational modes and provides fairly accurate anharmonic vibrational spectra that can be directly compared with experimental results without a need for empirical scaling. For (HF)n, good agreement is found with experimental data. This agreement shows that the MP2 potential surfaces for these systems are reasonably reliable. The accuracy is best for the stiff intramolecular modes, which indicates the validity of MP2 in describing coupling between intramolecular and intermolecular degrees of freedom. For (HF)n(H2O)n experimental results are unavailable. The computed intramolecular frequencies show a strong dependence on cluster size. Intensity features are predicted for future experiments.
