Poster for intern poster presentation

Inside the hot cells of HFEF (Hot Fuel Examination Facility) and FCF (Fuel Conditioning Facility) reside several large, purpose built 6500-pound cranes. Each crane holds several DC motors that must all be actuated without error for years on end. However, when a component becomes inoperable inside one of these crane carriages, it must be taken out of cell, fixed, and reevaluated. In order to test these cranes and EMMs, two test boxes were built. However, the test cabinets were designed with few engineering controls, zero released documentation, and they were both at some level of disrepair. This poster goes over some of the particulars that go into a control box redesign, mostly focusing on the drawing and DCR process.

Summer 2024 INL Intern Poster Session Submission - Brian Schumitz

This LRS submission is my poster for the INL Intern Poster Session, Summer 2024. Abstract: The Software Engineering and Cybersecurity Lab (SECL) at Montana State University has developed PIQUE, a system for evaluating software quality. PIQUE's adaptability allows for language-specific static-analysis operations, including a model for assessing cloud microservice ecosystems. These ecosystems often rely on Docker for efficient deployment and management of containerized services. Our research focuses on evaluating the network quality within these microservice ecosystems. To automate this process, we're utilizing Snort, an open-source intrusion detection system renowned for its ability to detect and log network traffic. By leveraging Snort's customizable rules, we aim to construct comprehensive testing methods for measuring and quantifying the network quality based on traffic between Docker containers. This research aims to enhance the overall security and reliability of cloud microservice ecosystems by providing automated and robust quality evaluation mechanisms, ultimately contributing to the advancement of software engineering practices in these environments

This poster has been developed for display during the 2023 Intern Poster Session. The poster is apart of the Nuclear Research and Experiments category. The focus of this poster is on the modifications made to the design of an integral effect test (IET) facility currently being designed for a new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) design. My contributions made to the IET facility are laid out along with an explanation on some of the aspects of designing a new nuclear reactor. This poster covers the ideas and importance of scaling and IET facilities with the context of the standards set by the NRC. There are also graphics of some other examples of IET facilities developed for other reactor designs. My contributions include designing the piping and instrumentation layout of the IET facility using CAD software. This is a key step in the process of designing this IET facility and needs to be designed to avoid excessive head loss.

Understanding the thermophysical properties of molten salts is crucial for the advancement of nuclear fuels. This project presents the design of a custom differential thermal analyzer (DTA) that utilizes non-contact ultrasonic mixing to agitate samples and prevent supercooling. The supercooling effect occurs when a liquid is below its freezing point without solidifying. This can be observed when a liquid in a freezer instantly transitions to its solid phase upon disturbance. By avoiding this effect, accurate transition temperatures of molten salts can be gathered for future applications. Initial mixing results were promising, leading to further refinement of the waveguides using ABAQUS to maximize input energy into the fluid. Future work will focus on integrating both mixing and cooling in conjunctions to observe the avoided effect.

Criticality Analysis of Wind Turbine Components - Intern Poster [Poster]

Wind turbines are an important part of critical energy infrastructure, with wind farms generating more than 10% of US energy in 2023. The goal of this project is to identify and analyze major, common components of wind turbines to reach a preliminary understanding of which should be considered most critical in terms of turbine operation and attack surface. At the time of this project, minimal data was available regarding component costs and lead times, so a qualitative risk assessment approach was used. Components were given a score of 1-5 in four categories– cost to repair, operational downtime, ease of physical attack, and ease of cyber attack. An overall component criticality score was assigned based on the sum of those scores, with a higher score indicating higher criticality. The turbine control system was identified as the most critical component, closely followed by the blades, structural components, and gearbox. This is ongoing project, and further research on the supply chain for wind turbine components will allow for a deeper and more concrete understanding of component criticality.

High-Fidelity Modeling of a Type-5 Wind Turbine Gearbox (Intern Poster) [Poster]

Type-5 wind turbines are unique in their use of a permanent magnet synchronous generator, as well as their use of a hydraulic torque converter. This architecture presents an opportunity to provide steady and grid-ready energy without the need for a power converter. With infrastructure continuity and reliability being an important topic amongst renewable energies, researchers have been prompted to further investigate the benefits of type-5 turbines’ unique electromechanical configuration on stable electricity generation. Researchers involved in the WindSG project, SG standing for synchronous generator, are aiming to model a type-5 turbine using Real Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) to evaluate its efficacy in the grid. RSCAD, the software run on the RTDS, comes pre-loaded with electrical and electromechanical components to help simulate electrical generation and grid conditions. However, within this repertoire there is a lack of a component to represent a gearbox with high-fidelity. Within RSCAD’s case studies, the gearbox is often represented simply by a gear ratio value. This presented the task of developing a high-fidelity gearbox model in RSCAD for use in the larger RTDS type-5 wind turbine model. This poster describes a method of developing a lumped parameter mathematical model to represent a planetary-parallel-parallel gearbox in RSCAD for use in RTDS.

Intern Poster - Characterizing Wildland Fire Conditions for Lab-Scale Testing of Advanced Conductors

As the demand for energy increases each year, electric utilities face the challenge of delivering more power than before. Current transmission/distribution networks have proved reliable in the past but are physically unable to meet higher energy demands. Traditional overhead conductor cables (such as Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR)) are limited in their ability to hold more voltage due to increased temperatures and resulting sag. When the cable sags, it comes closer to the ground, violating clearance standards and presenting an environmental risk. Newly developed advanced conductors, aluminum conductors with carbon fiber composite cores (instead of steel) mitigate this risk. Advanced conductors are engineered to perform in higher operating temperatures without sagging, thus possessing higher capacity potential. Regardless, utilities are hesitant to adopt this new technology due to scarcity of use data. The largest looming risk for utilities is wildland fires. There is little to no data on how advanced conductors perform in the event of a wildland fire. To address these concerns, this project aims to test the mechanical performance of advanced conductors in these conditions, providing utilities use data for their reference. The initial steps of the project will be to design and construct a fire table apparatus to reproduce wildland fire conditions, calculate proper parameters for this testing, and analyze the impact mathematically. After completing these actions, the next steps will be to test the advanced conductors in the laboratory fire chamber.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is an optical technique that combines image registration and tracking methods for accurate two-dimensional and three-dimensional changes in images. DIC software can be used to track the contour, deformation, and strain of a sample. In the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at INL (Idaho National Laboratory) there exists a small working window of samples that can become irradiated. Hundreds of graphite disks called piggybacks have undergone this irradiation as part of the Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) program. After irradiation, it is desirable to understand the change in tensile strength as a function of dose. Due to the limited space in the ATR, typical dog bone tensile tests reduce the number of graphite samples from hundreds to tens. However, there does exist an ASTM standard, D8289, which uses disc compression of graphite to estimate the tensile strength of the specimen with the Brazilian Disk test fixture. While only used as an estimate, which is typically off by a third, it is the purpose of this study to identify how to amend D8289 to remove the word "estimate" with the help of DIC.
