Preparation and Qualification of Preproduction SSR2 Jacketed Cavities for PIP-II

The qualification of 325 MHz Single Spoke Resonators type 2 (SSR2) jacketed cavities to meet technical requirements represents a significant milestone in the development of the SSR2 cryomodules for the PIP-II Project at Fermilab. This poster reports the procedures and lessons learned in processing and preparing these cavities for horizontal cold testing prior to integration into a cavity string assembly, with a focus on addressing the field emission issues observed during the cold testing. A comprehensive root cause analysis identified critical fabrication, processing, and handling factors impacting field emission onset. New techniques were successfully developed and implemented to achieve field emission-free SSR2 cavities, and efforts were made to correlate radiation levels measured at the test stand with expected levels in the LINAC tunnel. Additionally, the evolution of field emission through assembly steps was thoroughly investigated, leading to a reassessment of design choices and enhancing our understanding of their effects on cavity performance.

Design of Production PIP-II SSR1 Cavities

The testing and manufacturing process of the PIP-II Single Spoke Resonators Type 1 (SSR1) prototype jacketed cavity presented opportunities for refinement of the production series. Experience from the prototype cavity and the design of other cavities at Fermilab were used. The mechanical design of the production jacketed cavity has been modified from the prototype design to allow for improvements in overall performance, structural behavior, and manufacturability of the weld joints.

Status of PIP-II 650 MHz Prototype Dressed Cavity Qualification

Low-beta and high-beta sections of PIP-II linac will use nine low-beta cryomodules with four cavities each and four high-beta cryomodules with six cavities each. These cavities will be produced and qualified in collaboration between Fermilab and the international partner labs. Prior to their installation into prototype cryomodules, several dressed cavities, which include jacketed cavities, high power couplers, and tuners, will be qualified in STC horizontal test bed at Fermilab. After qualification of bare β = 0.9 cavities at Fermilab, several pre-production β = 0.92 and β = 0.61 cavities have been and are being fabricated and qualified. Procurements have also been started for high power couplers and tuners. In this contribution we present the current status of prototype dressed cavity qualification for PIP-II.

Fabrication experience of the pre-production PIP-II SSR2 cavities at Fermilab

The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II, [1]) linac will include 35 Single Spoke Resonators type 2 (SSR2). A total of eight pre-production SSR2 jacketed cavities will be procured and five installed in the first pre-production cryomodule. The mechanical design of the jacketed cavity has been finalized and it will be presented in this paper along with fabrication and processing experience. The importance of interfaces, quality controls and procurement aspects in the design phase will be remarked as well as lessons learned during the fabrication process. Furthermore, development studies will be presented together with other design validation tests.

STC Qualification Tests of PIP-II HB650 Cavities

Design of the high beta 650 MHz prototype cryomodule for PIP-II is currently undergoing at Fermilab. The cryomodule includes six 5-cell elliptical SRF cavities with accelerating voltage up to 20 MV and low heat dissipation (Q₀ > 3.3 · 10^{z}EhNZeHn). Characterization of performance of fully integrated jacketed cavities with high power coupler and tuner is crucial for the project. Such a characterization of jacketed cavity requires a horizontal test cryostat. The Fermilab Spoke Test Cryostat (STC) has been upgraded to accommodate testing of 650 MHz cavities. Commissioning of upgraded STC has been reported at SRF’19 conference. In this paper we present results of testing of the prototype HB650 cavity in upgraded STC facility. We characterize cavity performance and qualify it for the prototype HB650 cryomodule assembly.

Tuning of Multicell Superconducting Accelerating Cavities Using Pressurized Balloons

Plastic tuning of multicell superconducting accelerating cavities is crucial in the development cycle of cavities for particle accelerators. Cavities must meet stringent requirements regarding the operating mode frequency, field flatness, and eccentricity before lining them up in a cryomodule string. After dressing bare cavities with helium vessels, the welded vessel prevents access to individual cavity cells disallowing any further localized tuning. Currently, there is no straightforward way to tune dressed cavities other than cutting the vessel and then tuning the bare cavity and dressing it back, which would significantly impact cost and schedule. In this work, we present a novel tuning technique for already jacketed cavities that is non-invasive and cost-effective. The proposed scheme employs pressurized balloons to be temporarily deployed inside the cavity as a means to localize mechanical deformation in specific cells. The proposed tuning technique was successfully utilized to recover a 9-cell 1.3 GHz tesla-style cavity.

Application of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in the Design of SRF Cavities at Fermilab

Jacketed Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities structurally comprise of an inner niobium vessel surrounded by a liquid helium containment vessels. The pressure of the helium bath and/or its volume might be such that a jacketed SRF cavity shall be considered a system of pressure vessels. Thus, methods described in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) should be used to analyze the structural soundness of jacketed SRF cavities. This paper will report the use of the set of rules developed at Fermilab for the design of SRF cavities, such as jacketed 1.3 GHz cavities for LCLS-II HE and jacketed Single Spoke Resonator type~2 (SSR2) for PIP-II, to ensure a similar level of safety as prescribed by the ASME BPVC.

Certification testing of production superconducting quarter-wave and half-wave resonators for $\mathrm{FRIB}$

We report the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is designed to accelerate ion beams to 200 MeV per nucleon with 46 superconducting radio-frequency cryomodules. The FRIB driver linac uses quarter-wave resonators and half-wave resonators; with a total of 324 resonators, the linac is currently the largest heavy ion accelerator in the world. Production of jacketed resonators began in January 2014 and was completed in December 2019. Dewar certification testing of all the cavities was done before they were installed into cryomodules. The experience and lessons from more than 5 years of FRIB resonator production and certification testing are analyzed and summarized in this paper.
