Kink solutions with power law tails

We present a comprehensive review about the various facets of kink solutions with a power law tail, which have received considerable attention during the last few years. This area of research is in its early stages; although several aspects have become clear by now, there are a number of issues which have only been partially understood or not understood at all. We first discuss the aspects which are reasonably well known and then address in some detail the issues which are only partially or not understood at all. We present a wide class of higher (than sixth) order field theory models admitting implicit kink as well as mirror kink solutions where the two tails facing each other have a power law or a power-tower type fall off, whereas the other two ends not facing each other could have either an exponential or a power law tail. The models admitting implicit kink solutions where the two ends facing each other have an exponential tail while the other two ends have a power law tail are also discussed. Moreover, we present several field theory models which admit explicit kink solutions with a power law fall off; we note that in all these polynomial models while the potential V ( ϕ ) is continuous, its derivative is discontinuous. We also discuss one of the most important and only partially understood issues of the kink–kink and the kink–antikink forces in case the tails facing each other have a power law fall off. Finally, we briefly discuss the kink–antikink collisions at finite velocity and present some open questions.

Novel deformation function creating or destroying any number of even kink solutions

Here, we present a one-parameter family of deformation functions f(Φ) which have novel properties. Firstly, the deformation function is its own inverse. We show that a class of potentials remains invariant under this deformation. Further, when applied to a certain class of kink bearing potentials, one obtains potentials which are not bounded from below. Besides, we show that there is a wide class of potentials having power law kink tails which are connected by this deformation but the corresponding kink tails of the two potentials have different asymptotic behavior. Finally, we show that when this deformation function is applied to an appropriate one-parameter family of potentials having two kink solutions, it creates new potentials with an arbitrary even number (2n) of kink solutions. Conversely, by starting from this potential with 2n kink solutions the deformation function annihilates 2n-2 kinks and we get back the potential which we started with having only two kink solutions.

Explicit kink solutions in several one-parameter families of higher-order field theory models

Here, we present several one-parameter families of higher-order field theory models some of which admit explicit kink solutions with an exponential tail while others admit explicit kink solutions with a power-law tail. Various properties of these families of kink solutions are examined in detail. Further, by applying the recent Manton formalism, we provide estimates for the kink–kink (KK) and antikink–kink (AK-K) acceleration and hence the ratio of the corresponding AK-K and KK forces.

Logarithmic potential with super-super-exponential kink profiles and tails

In this work, we consider a novel one dimensional model of a logarithmic potential which has super-super-exponential kink profiles as well as kink tails. We provide analytic kink solutions of the model—it has 3 kinks, 3 mirror kinks and the corresponding antikinks. While some of the kink tails are super-super-exponential, some others are super-exponential whereas the remaining ones are exponential. The linear stability analysis reveals that there is a gap between the zero mode and the onset of continuum. Finally, we compare this potential and its kink solutions with those of very high order field theories harboring seven degenerate minima and their attendant kink solutions, specifically φ 14 , φ 16 and φ 18 .

Uniform-density Bose-Einstein condensates of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation found by solving the inverse problem for the confining potential

Here, in this work, we consider a “reverse-engineering” approach to construct confining potentials that support exact, constant density kovaton solutions to the classical Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) also known as the nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation (NLSE). In the one-dimensional case, the exact solution is the sum of stationary kink and anti-kink solutions, i.e. a kovaton, and in the overlapping region, the density is constant. In higher dimensions, the exact solutions are generalizations of this wave function. In the absence of self-interactions, the confining potential is similar to a smoothed out finite square well with minima also at the edges. When self-interactions are added, a term proportional to ±gψ*ψ gets added to the confining potential and ±gM, where M is the norm, gets added to the total energy. In the realm of stability analysis, we find (linearly) stable solutions in the case with repulsive self-interactions which also are stable to self-similar deformations. For attractive interactions, however, the minima at the edges of the potential get deeper and a barrier in the center forms as we increase the norm. This leads to instabilities at a critical value of M (related to the number of particles in the BEC). Comparing the stability criteria from Derrick’s theorem and Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis stability results, we find that both predict stability for repulsive self-interactions and instability at a critical mass M for attractive interactions. However, the numerical analysis gives a much lower critical mass. The numerical analysis shows further that the initial instabilities violate the symmetry x → -x assumed by Derrick’s theorem.

Superposed hyperbolic kink and pulse solutions of coupled $φ$ 4 , NLS and mKdV equations

Here, in this paper, we obtain novel solutions of a coupled $φ$ 4 , a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation and a coupled modified Korteweg de Vries equation which can be re-expressed as a linear superposition of either the sum or the difference of two hyperbolic pulse solutions or the sum of either a two-kink or a kink and an antikink solution. These results demonstrate that the notion of superposed solutions extends to coupled nonlinear equations as well.

Regular and in-plane skyrmions and antiskyrmions from boundary instabilities

We formulate a theory of skyrmion and antiskyrmion generation using magnetic field and charge current pulses. We show that the topological defect can be created at an edge of a system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) as well as at a boundary between regions with different DMI. We consider both perpendicular and in-plane (also known as magnetic bimerons) versions of skyrmions and antiskyrmions. We show that the magnetization twist in the vicinity of an edge or a boundary is described by a kink solution, the presence of which can instigate the generation of topological defects. We study the collective excitations of magnetization analytically and numerically, and demonstrate that under application of magnetic field and charge current pulses the magnon modes localized near boundaries can develop instabilities leading to the formation of skyrmions or antiskyrmions. As a result, due to the skyrmion and antiskyrmion Hall effects, a properly chosen current direction can push the topological defects away from the boundary, thus facilitating their generation.

Superposed periodic kink and pulse solutions of coupled nonlinear equations

Here, we present novel previously unexplored periodic solutions, expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions, for both a coupled Φ 4 model and a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) model. Remarkably, these solutions can be elegantly reformulated as a linear combination of periodic kinks and antikinks, or as a combination of two periodic kinks or two periodic pulse solutions. However, we also find that for $m=0$ and a specific value of the periodicity (or at a nonzero value of the elliptic modulus $m$) this superposition does not hold. These results demonstrate that the notion of superposed solutions extends to the coupled nonlinear equations as well.

Novel superposed kinklike and pulselike solutions for several nonlocal nonlinear equations

In this work, we show that a number of nonlocal nonlinear equations, including the Ablowitz–Musslimani and Yang variant of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, the nonlocal modified Korteweg de Vries (mKdV) equation, and the nonlocal Hirota equation, admit novel kinklike and pulselike superposed periodic solutions. Furthermore, we show that the nonlocal mKdV equation also admits the superposed (hyperbolic) kink–antikink solution. In addition, we show that while the nonlocal Ablowitz–Musslimani variant of the NLS admits complex parity-time reversal-invariant kink and pulse solutions, neither the local NLS nor the Yang variant of the nonlocal NLS admits such solutions. Finally, except for the Yang variant of the nonlocal NLS, we show that the other three nonlocal equations admit both the kink and pulse solutions in the same model.

An efficient level set method for tracking many materials

Here, we present an efficient level set method to track an arbitrary number of materials. The algorithm is optimal in the sense that it only needs to store a single unsigned distance-like function and a single integer indicator function, independent of the number of materials or distinct regions being tracked. Furthermore, for smooth velocity fields and smooth interface shape, arbitrarily high order solutions can be demonstrated. For interfaces that are or become kinked, the solution is limited to second-order convergence rates in the L 1 norm and first-order in the L ∞ norm.

Kinklike structures in an arcsin real scalar dynamics

Highlights: • Kinklike analyses in a real scalar theory with an arcsin dynamic. • First-order formalism implementation and deformation procedure in an arcsin scalar dynamics. In this paper, we analyze kink-like analytical solutions in a real scalar theory with an arcsin dynamics inspired by the arcsin electrodynamics presented in Kruglov (2015). This analysis is done by means of the first-order formalism. This formalism provides a framework where the equations of motion can be simplified by preserving the linear stability of the theory. In this work, the deformation procedure is implemented with the aim of finding exact solutions in systems with generalized dynamics. Along the paper, we explore how the first-order formalism is implemented in the arcsin kinetics and how such a term influences the kink-like solutions. As a part of the result of our paper, we show that the kink-like solutions are similar to the ones obtained in the standard scalar kinetic theory. We also show that the extra parameter, that controls the non-linearities of the model, plays an essential role in the energy densities and stability potentials. These quantities vary according to this parameter. The goals here are to show how the first-order framework is implemented in this arcsin scenario and to present the analytical kink-like solutions that can be found by means of the first-order framework and deformation method.

New static solutions of symmetric $\phi^4$ equation

In this paper, we provide new exact solutions of nonlinear Klein–Gordon ( $\phi^4$) equation in 1 + 1-dimension. For simplicity, we focus on the static equation and ignore the time-dependence. The symmetric $\phi^4$ equation has played an important role in several areas of physics. We obtain several novel non-singular solutions of the symmetric $\phi^4$ model in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions and compare them with the well-known solutions. Finally, we categorize these solutions in terms of the potential parameters.

Solitons of the symmetric $ϕ^4 − ϕ^2 |ϕ| − ϕ^2$ triple well model

A symmetric $ϕ^4 − ϕ^2 |ϕ| − ϕ^2$ model has recently attracted attention due to its usefulness in studying tunable phase transitions. Here, we analyze the behavior of this model for the entire range of parameters and obtain its kink and pulse solutions. For completeness, we also present several periodic solutions of this model. Furthermore, we present a generalized symmetric $ϕ^{4n} − ϕ^{2n} |ϕ| − ϕ^2$ model where $n = 1, 2, 3, ...$ and obtain its kink and pulse solutions for arbitrary $n$.

Wormholes with ends of the world

We study classical wormhole solutions in 3D gravity with end-of-the-world (EOW) branes, conical defects, kinks, and punctures. These solutions compute statistical averages of an ensemble of boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs) related to universal asymptotics of OPE data extracted from the 2D conformal bootstrap. Conical defects connect BCFT bulk operators; branes join BCFT boundary intervals with identical boundary conditions; kinks (1D defects along branes) link BCFT boundary operators; and punctures (0D defects) are endpoints where conical defects terminate on branes. We provide evidence for a correspondence between the gravity theory and the ensemble. In particular, the agreement of the g-function dependence results from an underlying topological aspect of the on-shell EOW brane action, from which a BCFT analog of the Schlenker-Witten theorem also follows.

The extended auxiliary equation mapping method to determine novel exact solitary wave solutions of the nonlinear fractional PDEs

Abstract In this paper, some new nonlinear fractional partial differential equations (PDEs) have been considered.Three models are including the space-time fractional-order Boussinesq equation, space-time (2 + 1)-dimensional breaking soliton equations, and space-time fractional-order SRLW equation describe the behavior of these equations in the diverse applications. Meanwhile, the fractional derivatives in the sense of β -derivative are defined. Some fractional PDEs will convert to the considered ordinary differential equations by the help of transformation of β -derivative. These equations are analyzed utilizing an integration scheme, namely, the extended auxiliary equation mapping method. The different kinds of traveling wave solutions, solitary, topological, dark soliton, periodic, kink, and rational, fall out as a by-product of this scheme. Finally, the existence of the solutions for the constraint conditions is also shown. The outcome indicates that some fractional PDEs are used as a growing finding in the engineering sciences, mathematical physics, and so forth.

Nonlinear soliton confinement in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains

In this work, we analyze the low-energy dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional, large-$\textit{S}$ quantum antiferromagnets with easy-axis anisotropy, using a semiclassical nonlinear sigma model. The saddle point approximation leads to a sine-Gordon equation which supports soliton solutions. These correspond to the movement of spatially extended domain walls. Long-range magnetic order is a consequence of a weak interchain coupling. Below the ordering temperature, the coupling to nearby chains leads to an energy cost associated with the separation of two domain walls. From the kink-antikink two-soliton solution, we compute the effective confinement potential. At distances large compared to the size of the solitons the potential is linear, as expected for pointlike domain walls. At small distances the gradual annihilation of the solitons weakens the effective attraction and renders the potential quadratic. From numerically solving the effective one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with this nonlinear confinement potential we compute the soliton bound state spectrum. We apply the theory to CaFe 2 O 4 , an anisotropic $\textit{S}$ = 5/2 magnet based upon antiferromagnetic zigzag chains. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we are able to resolve seven discrete energy levels for spectra recorded slightly below the Néel temperature $T_N$ ≈ 200 K. These modes are well described by our nonlinear confinement model in the regime of large spatially extended solitons.

Imposition of local boundary conditions in peridynamics without a fictitious layer and unphysical stress concentrations

Here, this study introduces a general approach for the imposition of local boundary conditions in non- ordinary state-based peridynamics (NOSB PD) to eliminate the displacement kinks near the boundary without a fictitious layer under quasi-static loading conditions. It identifies the underlying reason for the unphysical displacement kinks. Under an imposed linear displacement field, the NOSB PD equilibrium equation is not satisfied near the boundary due to the unsymmetric horizon of material points. However, the equilibrium equation derived by using the PD differential operator is satisfied at such material points. Therefore, the material body is divided into three regions to satisfy the equilibrium equations and to impose displacement and tractions boundary conditions. This approach does not deviate from the original NOSB PD; however, it provides a simple solution to eliminate the displacement kink near the boundary, which leads to unphysical stress concentrations. Its efficacy is demonstrated by considering elastic rectangular and square plates subjected to various types of boundary conditions leading to homogeneous as well as nonhomogeneous deformations. The creep response of a rectangular plate further proves the robustness of the present approach. Also, a quasi-static crack propagation from a pre-existing crack in a square plate under mode-I, mode-II and mixed-mode loading conditions demonstrates its capability for failure prediction based on the critical stretch criteria. Finally, its applicability for 3D analysis is demonstrated by considering a rectangular prism under applied stretch and normal stress.

Searching for gauge theories with the conformal bootstrap

Infrared fixed points of gauge theories provide intriguing targets for the modern conformal bootstrap program. In this work we provide some preliminary evidence that a family of gauged fermionic CFTs saturate bootstrap bounds and can potentially be solved with the conformal bootstrap. We start by considering the bootstrap for SO( N ) vector 4-point functions in general dimension D . In the large N limit, upper bounds on the scaling dimensions of the lowest SO( N ) singlet and traceless symmetric scalars interpolate between two solutions at Δ = D/ 2 – 1 and Δ = D – 1 via generalized free field theory. In 3D the critical O ( N ) vector models are known to saturate the bootstrap bounds and correspond to the kinks approaching Δ = 1 / 2 at large N . We show that the bootstrap bounds also admit another infinite family of kinks \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) , which at large N approach solutions containing free fermion bilinears at Δ = D – 1 from below. The kinks \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) appear in general dimensions with a D -dependent critical N * below which the kink disappears. We also study relations between the bounds obtained from the bootstrap with SO( N ) vectors, SU( N ) fundamentals, and SU( N ) × SU( N ) bi-fundamentals. We provide a proof for the coincidence between bootstrap bounds with different global symmetries. We show evidence that the proper symmetries of the underlying theories of \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) are subgroups of SO( N ), and we speculate that the kinks \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) relate to the fixed points of gauge theories coupled to fermions.
