Wide class of logarithmic potentials with power-tower kink tails

We present a wide class of potentials which admit kinks and corresponding mirror kinks with either a power law or an exponential tail at the two extreme ends and a power-tower form of tails at the two neighbouring ends. We analyse kink stability equation in all these cases and show that there is no gap between the zero mode and the beginning of the continuum. Finally, we provide a recipe for obtaining logarithmic potentials with power-tower kink tails and estimate kink–kink interaction strength.

Novel deformation function creating or destroying any number of even kink solutions

Here, we present a one-parameter family of deformation functions f(Φ) which have novel properties. Firstly, the deformation function is its own inverse. We show that a class of potentials remains invariant under this deformation. Further, when applied to a certain class of kink bearing potentials, one obtains potentials which are not bounded from below. Besides, we show that there is a wide class of potentials having power law kink tails which are connected by this deformation but the corresponding kink tails of the two potentials have different asymptotic behavior. Finally, we show that when this deformation function is applied to an appropriate one-parameter family of potentials having two kink solutions, it creates new potentials with an arbitrary even number (2n) of kink solutions. Conversely, by starting from this potential with 2n kink solutions the deformation function annihilates 2n-2 kinks and we get back the potential which we started with having only two kink solutions.

Logarithmic potential with super-super-exponential kink profiles and tails

In this work, we consider a novel one dimensional model of a logarithmic potential which has super-super-exponential kink profiles as well as kink tails. We provide analytic kink solutions of the model—it has 3 kinks, 3 mirror kinks and the corresponding antikinks. While some of the kink tails are super-super-exponential, some others are super-exponential whereas the remaining ones are exponential. The linear stability analysis reveals that there is a gap between the zero mode and the onset of continuum. Finally, we compare this potential and its kink solutions with those of very high order field theories harboring seven degenerate minima and their attendant kink solutions, specifically φ 14 , φ 16 and φ 18 .

Kink solutions with power law tails

We present a comprehensive review about the various facets of kink solutions with a power law tail, which have received considerable attention during the last few years. This area of research is in its early stages; although several aspects have become clear by now, there are a number of issues which have only been partially understood or not understood at all. We first discuss the aspects which are reasonably well known and then address in some detail the issues which are only partially or not understood at all. We present a wide class of higher (than sixth) order field theory models admitting implicit kink as well as mirror kink solutions where the two tails facing each other have a power law or a power-tower type fall off, whereas the other two ends not facing each other could have either an exponential or a power law tail. The models admitting implicit kink solutions where the two ends facing each other have an exponential tail while the other two ends have a power law tail are also discussed. Moreover, we present several field theory models which admit explicit kink solutions with a power law fall off; we note that in all these polynomial models while the potential V ( ϕ ) is continuous, its derivative is discontinuous. We also discuss one of the most important and only partially understood issues of the kink–kink and the kink–antikink forces in case the tails facing each other have a power law fall off. Finally, we briefly discuss the kink–antikink collisions at finite velocity and present some open questions.

Explicit kink solutions in several one-parameter families of higher-order field theory models

Here, we present several one-parameter families of higher-order field theory models some of which admit explicit kink solutions with an exponential tail while others admit explicit kink solutions with a power-law tail. Various properties of these families of kink solutions are examined in detail. Further, by applying the recent Manton formalism, we provide estimates for the kink–kink (KK) and antikink–kink (AK-K) acceleration and hence the ratio of the corresponding AK-K and KK forces.

Kink-antikink collisions and multi-bounce resonance windows in higher-order field theories

In this work, we study collisions of coherent structures in higher-order field-theoretic models, such as the Φ 8 , Φ 10 and Φ 12 ones. The main distinguishing feature, of the example models considered herein, is that the collision arises due to the long-range interacting algebraic tails of these solitary waves. We extend the approach to suitably initialize the relevant kinks, in the additional presence of finite initial velocity, in order to minimize the dispersive wave radiation potentially created by their slow spatial decay. We find that, when suitably initialized, these models still feature the multi-bounce resonance windows earlier found in models in which the kinks bear exponential tails, such as the Φ 4 and Φ 6 field theories among others. Also present is the self-similar structure of the associated windows with three- and more-bounce windows at the edges of two- and lower-bounce ones. Moreover, phenomenological but highly accurate (and predictive), scaling relations are derived for the dependence of the time between consecutive collisions and, e.g., the difference in kinetic energy between the incoming one and the critical one for one-bounces. Such scalings are traced extensively over two-bounce collision windows throughout the three models, hinting at the possibility of an analytical theory in this direction.

The Unexpected Role of Cations in the Self-Assembly of Positively Charged Amphiphiles at Liquid/Liquid Interfaces

Conventional wisdom suggests that cations play a minimal role in the assembly of cationic amphiphiles. Here, we show that at liquid/liquid (L/L) interfaces, specific cation effects can modulate the assemblies of hydrophobic tails in an oil phase despite being attached to cationic headgroups in the aqueous phase. In this work, we used oligo-dimethylsiloxane (ODMS) methyl imidazolium amphiphiles to identify these specific interactions at hexadecane/aqueous interfaces. Small cations, such as Li + , bind to the O atoms in the ODMS tail and pin it to the interface, thereby imposing a kinked conformation-as evidenced by vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. While larger Cs + ions more readily partition to the interface, they do not form analogous complexes. Our data not only point to ways for controlling amphiphile structure at L/L interfaces but also suggest a means for the separation of Li + , or related applications, in soft-matter electronics.
