Operating Klystrons at the Spallation Neutron Source – Two Decades of Perspective

Klystron amplifiers have been operated at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in support of the user program since 2006. SNS tubes have amassed over 100,000 hours of high-voltage and filament-on time providing a significant source of operational statistics for high power, high-duty klystrons. Additionally, the SNS Radiofrequency (RF) Systems Group has developed operational methods to mitigate specific reliability challenges, such as cathode arcing and output power instability. Despite much progress, many of these challenges persist, prompting the SNS to update the procedures used for klystron processing as well as develop a higher throughput test stand.

High efficiency RF sources developments

Calabazas Creek Research, Inc. (CCR) and its collaborators are developing high efficiency RF sources operating from a few hundred MHz to C-Band and power levels from tens to hundreds of kilowatts with the goal of providing MW-relevant sources. The efficiencies approach or exceed 80% with projected costs as low as $0.50/ Watt. Sources under development include magnetrons with phase and amplitude control, single and multi-beam klystrons, multi-beam power grid tubes, and multiple beam IOTs. A magnetron system achieved more than 80% efficiency with fast amplitude control using modulation of the phase locking signal. This would be a low cost, high efficiency RF source for superconducting accelerators. An L-Band, single beam klystron was built with simulated efficiency of 80%. The klystron has yet to be tested to confirm the simulation results. CCR is currently developing a multi-beam klystron to produce more than 200 kW CW at 80% efficiency. Also in development is a multiple beam triode to produce 200 kW CW from 300 MHz to approximately 1 GHz. Not only does the simulated efficiency exceed 75%, but it would be the lowest cost RF source in this frequency range. Finally, CCR recently concluded research for a multiple beam IOT at 700 MHz using third harmonic drive to boost efficiency toward 85%. Successful development and transition to production of these sources will significantly alter the cost/performance landscape for RF power generation.

Spallation Neutron Source Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) Project: Lessons Learned for CD-4

The SNS PPU project goals were to design, build, install and test the equipment necessary to double the accelerator power from 1.4 MW to 2.8 MW and to deliver a 2.0 MW qualified target. PPU also included the provision of a stub-out in the SNS accumulator-ring-to-target tunnel to facilitate a rapid connection to a new proton beamline for the Second Target Station (STS) project. The power capability was doubled by increasing the proton beam energy by 33% and the peak beam current by 50%, relative to pre-PPU accelerator performance. The project also included modifications to some buildings and services. The PPU project accomplished the energy upgrade by fabricating and installing new superconducting radiofrequency (RF) cryomodules, with supporting RF equipment, in the existing linac tunnel and klystron gallery, respectively. The High Voltage Converter Modulators (HVCM) and klystrons for some of the existing installed RF equipment were upgraded to handle the higher beam current. The increased beam power of 2 MW on the First Target Station (FTS) was enabled by the addition of a new high-volume gas injection system for pressure pulse and cavitation mitigation in the mercury target and a redesigned mercury target vessel.

On forced RF generation of CW magnetrons for accelerators

CW magnetrons, initially developed for industrial RF heaters, were suggested to power RF cavities of superconducting accelerators due to their higher efficiency and lower cost than traditionally used klystrons, IOTs or solid-state amplifiers. RF amplifiers driven by a master oscillator serve as coherent RF sources. CW magnetrons are regenerative RF generators with a huge regenerative gain. This causes regenerative instability with a quite large noise when a magnetron operates with the anode voltage above the threshold of self-excitation. Traditionally, an injection locking by a small signal is used for stabilization of magnetrons. In this case CW magnetrons with the injection-locked oscillations generate a high level of noise. This may preclude use of standard CW magnetrons in this operating mode in the Superconducting RF (SRF) accelerators. In this article we described a method developed for forced RF generation of CW magnetrons when the magnetron startup is provided by the injected forcing signal and the regenerative noise is suppressed. The method is most suitable for powering high Q-factor cavities.

Calculation of rf-induced temporal jitter in ultrafast electron diffraction

A significant contribution to the temporal resolution of an ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) instrument is arrival time jitter caused by amplitude and phase variation of radio-frequency (rf) cavities. In this paper, we present a semianalytical approach for calculating rf-induced temporal jitter from klystron and rf cavity parameters. Our approach allows fast estimation of temporal jitter for MeV-UED beamlines and can serve as a virtual timing tool when shot-to-shot measurements of rf amplitude and phase jitters are available. A simulation study for the SLAC MeV-UED instrument is presented, and the temporal resolution of several beamline configurations is compared.

Virtual Critical Coupling in High-Power Resonant Systems

Power reflections are a fundamental challenge in high-power resonant systems, causing energy loss, limiting per- formance, and potentially damaging critical components. This problem is particularly acute in applications such as lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) for tokamak-based nuclear fusion, where efficient, stable power transfer to the plasma is paramount. In this work, we introduce and experimentally demonstrate the virtual critical coupling (VCC) mechanism, a nonmechanical method to achieve reflection-free excitation in high-power S-band resonators. VCC utilizes a temporally shaped excitation signal with a precise complex frequency, tailored to the resonator’s characteristics to enable complete energy absorption. Using a custom low-level RF system and a 5-MW S-band klystron, we conducted experiments from low power (32 mW) to high power (600 kW). Furthermore, the results demonstrate a greater than ninefold reduction in the reflection coefficient compared to conventional monochromatic excitation. This signal processing-based approach offers a robust path toward enhancing the efficiency and stability of high-power resonant systems, with significant implications for particle accelerators and the advancement of nuclear fusion energy.

The PIP-II dedicated RFPI system final design

The Radio Frequency Protection Interlock (RFPI) system main responsibility is to collect predefined set of signals and to protect each RF station. In case of safety limits violations from any of this input signals the RFPI has to instantenously drop permits for the LLRF or RF amplifier (eq. Solid State Amplifier - SSA or klystron) operation.This paper presents an overview of the final design of the RFPI system dedicated for Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) at Fermilab.

LLRF commissioning of the CEBAF C75 upgrades SAM 2024/25

An often-overlooked aspect of Low Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) design is commissioning of a new system. During Jlab’s Scheduled Accelerator Maintenance (SAM) in 2024, two C75 Cryomodule were installed in CEBAF with Jlab’s LLRF 3.0 system. Jlab’s team has invested effort in automating and standardizing their commissioning process. Several key components are klystron characterization, cavity characterization, and interlock verification. This poster will present the summary of LLRF preparation and commissioning efforts at Jlab.

CW magnetrons, initially developed for industrial RF heaters, were suggested to power RF cavities of superconducting accelerators due to their higher efficiency and lower cost of RF power per Watt than used traditionally klystrons, IOTs or solid-state amplifiers. RF amplifiers driven by a master oscillator serve as coherent RF sources. CW magnetrons are regenerative RF generators with a huge regenerative gain to start up reliably with self-excitation even if the tube is powered by a DC power supply. This causes regenerative instability with a large noise when a magnetron operates with the anode voltage above the threshold of self-excitation. Traditionally for stabilization of magnetrons is used injection locking by a signal PLock ≤ -20 dB or less then of the magnetron power PMag. Then the magnetron generates the injection locked oscillations and generates noise. This may preclude use of standard CW magnetrons in some SRF accelerators. We developed briefly described below a mode for forced coherent RF generation of CW magnetrons when the magnetron startup is provided by the injected forcing signal and the regenerative noise is suppressed. The mode is most suitable for powering high Q-factor SRF cavities.

On operation and control of CW magnetrons for superconducting accelerators

CW magnetrons, developed for industrial RF heaters, were suggested to feed RF cavities of superconducting accelerators due to higher efficiency and lower cost of RF power than provide traditionally used klystrons, IOTs or solid-state amplifiers. RF amplifiers driven by a master oscillator serve as coherent RF sources. CW magnetrons are regenerative RF auto generators with a huge regenerative gain. This causes regenerative instability with a notable noise when a magnetron operates as an auto generator i.e., with the anode voltage above the threshold of self-excitation. Traditionally, an injection locking by a small signal is used for phase stabilization of magnetrons. In this case CW magnetrons with the injection-locked (coherent) oscillations generate a notable level of noise. This may preclude use of CW magnetrons in this mode in the Superconducting RF (SRF) accelerators. This paper reviews PIC modeling and previously obtained experimental results for the operation and control of CW magnetrons, which led to the development of techniques most suitable for various SRF accelerators using forced RF oscillation of magnetrons, when the magnetron is launched by an injected forcing signal, and regenerative noise is suppressed.

Design and Commission of Solid State Switch Driver in SLAC Subbooster Modulator

The LINAC sub-booster modulator is a pulsed power supply to provide a 30kV pulse to drive a klystron in SLAC LINAC. It has utilized vacuum tetrode as pulse switch for more than 60 years. With the vacuum tetrode availability becoming less and its cost surging, a natural choice is to use solid state switch in this pulsed power modulator. To commission solid state switch in LINAC sub-booster modulator, a driver board is designed to drive a BEHLKE HTS-LC2 series MOSFET based switches. The design concept and some concerns in design will be presented. The driver board is universal for all HTS-LC2 series switches because they share the same driver signals and connections. After the driver is commissioned, two AI systems are introduced to design one core part of the driver, the results are presented here. During the commission of the driver board in the LINAC sub-booster modulators, some problems happened and were addressed.
