Laser-plasma spectra of highly ionized fluorine

Lines between 11.3 and 17.2 A of lithium-like, helium-like, and hydrogen-like fluorine have been observed in spectra of laser-produced plasmas. These lines include nine members of the Lyman series of F IX; eight members of the principal series of F VIII; and satellite lines arising from doubly excited configurations of F VII and F VIII. Similar satellite lines of the abundant solar elements have been identified in soft X-ray spectra of solar flares. A wavelength list of fluorine lines is given, and physical conditions in the plasma are discussed.

Collisional coupling in counterstreaming laser-produced plasmas

The collisional processes which transfer momentum between counterstreaming plasmas are reviewed and applied to the example of a laser-produced plasma expanding into a partially ionized background. Experimental measurements of the dependence of the ion flow field on collisional momentum transfer demonstrate the validity of the simplified treatment of collision processes which have been adopted. A numerical model which simulates the laser-plasma interaction with the background confirms the importance of collisions in previous experimental studies of momentum coupling, and provides some insight into the distinction between collisional and collisionless flow regimes.

Laser-excitation technique for the measurement of absolute transition probabilities of weak atomic lines

A new technique is presented for the measurement of transition probabilities for weak allowed, intersystem, and forbidden lines. The method exploits the fact that oscillator strength is proportional to the number of stimulated absorptions and emissions produced by a narrow-band laser pulse of known energy which is in resonance with an atomic transition. The method is tested for a particular transition of Mg I with a known oscillator strength value and of appropriate magnitude. The number densities are measured using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the hook method for the lower level population and by measuring an absorption-equivalent width for the other. The apparatus consisted of a high-power tunable laser and a magnesium oven to produce excited Mg vapor, and a laser-plasma background continuum. The results are in good agreement with theoretical and other experimental data.

Multiple Raman up-conversion of radiation from pre-existing Langmuir turbulence

Little is known regarding the mechanisms involved in the production of radiation at frequencies which are much higher than the maximum plasma frequency in nonmagnetic plasmas. It is pointed out that radiation at high multiples of the plasma frequency has been observed in laser-pellet experiments, in relativistic beam-plasma interactions, and in low-energy beam-plasma interactions. Radiation at twice the plasma frequency can be produced by coalescence of two Langmuir waves. Another approach is based on radiation near the plasma frequency or its second harmonic, produced by instability or by external sources. Raman scatter from preexisting Langmuir turbulence is permitted repeatedly. At each step such scattering will produce frequency upshifts (anti-Stokes process) and downshifts (Stokes process). The present paper is concerned with this process. Attention is given to equilibrium spectra, analytic approximations, laser-plasma interaction and coherent radiation from relativistic electron beams.
