Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of quarks in protons: A basis light-front quantization approach

We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our D -term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. The distributions of pressures and shear forces are similar to those from different models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Basis light-front quantization for the Λ b and Σ b baryons

Within the basis light-front quantization framework, we compute the masses and light-front wave functions of the Λ b baryon and its isospin triplet counterparts Σ b + , Σ b 0 , and Σ b − using a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock sector. These wave functions are obtained as eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian, which incorporates the one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling and a three-dimensional confinement potential. With the quark masses and the couplings as adjustable parameters, the computed masses are set within the experimental range. The resulting predictions for their electromagnetic properties align well with other theoretical calculations. Additionally, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of these baryons are obtained for the first time, with gluon and sea quark distributions dynamically generated through QCD evolution of the valence quark PDFs. Advances for QCD and the standard model: color-confining light-front holography and the principle of maximum conformality

Here, I review how the application of superconformal quantum mechanics and light-front holography leads to new insights into the physics of color confinement, the spectroscopy and dynamics of hadrons, as well as surprising supersymmetric relations between the masses of mesons, baryons, and tetraquarks. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is automatically fulfilled by supersymmetric Light-Front QCD. The light-front holographic approach (HLFQCD) also predicts the behavior of the QCD running coupling and other observables from the nonperturbative color-confining domain to the perturbative domain. One can determine the QCD running coupling to high precision from the data of just a single experiment over the entire perturbative regime by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). The PMC, which generalizes the conventional Gell-Mann-Low method for scale-setting in perturbative QED to non-Abelian QCD, provides a rigorous method for achieving unambiguous scheme-independent, fixed-order Standard Model predictions, consistent with the principles of the renormalization group. I also briefly review a novel feature of hadronic physics predicted by QCD: intrinsic heavy quarks.

Off-shell pion properties: Electromagnetic form factors and light-front wave functions

The off-shell pion electromagnetic form factors are explored with corresponding off-shell light-front wave functions modeled by constituent quark and antiquark. We apply the Mandelstam approach for the microscopic computation of the form factors relating the model parameters with the pion decay constant and charge radius. Analyzing the existing data on the cross sections for the Sullivan process, 1 H(e,e',π + )⁢n, Charged pion form factor between Q 2 = 0.60, and 2.45 GeV 2 . I. Measurements of the cross section for the 1 H⁡(e,e'⁢π + )⁢n reaction, we extract the off-shell pion form factor using the relation derived from the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity for the pion electromagnetic current. They are compared with our previous results from exactly solvable manifestly covariant model of a (3+1)-dimensional fermion field theory. We find that the adopted constituent quark model reproduces the extracted off-shell form factor F 1 ⁡(Q 2 ,t) from the experimental data within a few percent difference and matches well with our previous theoretical simulation which exhibits a variation of about 10% for the extracted off-shell pion form factor g(Q 2 ,t). We also identify the pion valence parton distribution function (PDF) and transverse momentum distribution (TMD) in terms of the light-front wave function and discuss their off-shell properties.

Parton distribution functions from scalar light-front parton gas model

Here, we propose an application of a microcanonical ensemble with light-front kinematics to model the phase-space distribution of relativistic constituents of a bound state. These constituents denoted by partons are treated as classical spin-zero particles confined inside the bound state with inter-parton collisions as their only interaction. The microcanonical molecular dynamics ensemble is applied to obtain the phase-space distribution of such a thermodynamic system. We sample this phase-space distribution using Monte Carlo algorithms to obtain the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in scenarios with 3, 4, and 5 identical partons. In addition PDFs when a selected number of massless partons are mixed with 3 massive partons are also presented.

Beyond leading twist: 𝜌 meson decay constants and distribution amplitudes in a self-consistent light-front quark model

In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of decay constants and chiral-even and chiral-odd distribution amplitudes (DAs) up to twist 4 for the 𝜌 meson in the standard light-front quark model (LFQM) based on the Bakamjian-Thomas (BT) construction. For the 𝜌 meson, which possesses both longitudinal (ℎ=0) and transverse (ℎ =±1) polarizations, two types of decay constants, 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$, arises accordingly. We demonstrate that these decay constants can be self-consistently extracted from both local (𝑧𝜇 =0) and nonlocal (𝑧𝜇 ≠0) matrix elements ⟨0⁢|$\overline{𝑞}$(𝑧)⁢Γ⁢𝑞⁡(−𝑧)|⁢𝜌⁡(𝑃,ℎ)⟩, with Γ=(𝛾 𝜇 ,𝜎 𝜇⁢𝜈 ,𝛾 𝜇 ⁢𝛾 5 ,𝟏), in a manner independent of current components, polarizations, and reference frames. In particular, we emphasize the role of nonlocal matrix elements involving axial-vector and scalar currents, where mixing between 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$ occurs. We show that this mixing is consistently resolved through the BT construction, ensuring the proper extraction of these decay constants.

Mixing effects on spectroscopy and partonic observables of heavy mesons with logarithmic confining potential in a light-front quark model

Using the variational principle, we systematically investigate the mass spectra and wave functions of both 1⁢𝑆 and 2⁢𝑆 state heavy pseudoscalar (𝑃) and vector (𝑉) mesons within the light-front quark model. This approach incorporates a Coulomb plus logarithmic confinement potential to accurately describe the constituent quark and antiquark dynamics. Additionally, spin hyperfine interactions are introduced perturbatively to compute the masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The present analyses of the 1⁢𝑆 and 2⁢𝑆 states require the consideration of mixing between them to account for empirical constraints. These constraints include the mass gap Δ⁢𝑀 𝑃 >Δ⁢𝑀 𝑉 , where Δ⁢𝑀 𝑃⁡(𝑉) =𝑀$^{2⁢𝑆}_{𝑃⁡(𝑉)}$−𝑀$^{1⁢𝑆}_{𝑃⁡(𝑉)}$ and the hierarchy of the decay constants 𝑓 1⁢𝑆 >𝑓 2⁢𝑆 . We find the optimal value of the mixing angle to be 𝜃 =1⁢8°, significantly enhancing the consistency between our spectroscopic predictions and the experimental data compiled by the Particle Data Group. Furthermore, based on the predicted mass, the newly observed resonance 𝐵 𝐽⁡ (5840) could be assigned as a 2 1⁢ 𝑆 0 state in the 𝐵 meson family. The study also reports various pertinent observables, including twist-two distribution amplitudes, electromagnetic form factors, charge radii, 𝜉 moments, and transition form factors that are found to be consistent with both available lattice simulations and experimental data. In addition, our predicted branching ratios for the channels of 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 as well as rare decays of 𝐵 0 and 𝐵$^0_𝑠$ appear in accordance with experimental data.

Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target. II. Deuteron and spectator nucleon tagging

We develop the theoretical framework for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target and apply it to scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging. In Part I (previous article), we present the general form of the semi-inclusive cross section and polarization observables for the spin-1 target. In Part II (this article), we consider deep-inelastic scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging as a special case of target fragmentation. Methods of light-front quantization are employed to separate nuclear and hadronic structure in the high-energy process and achieve a composite description. The light-front wave function of the polarized deuteron is obtained from a rotationally covariant three-dimensional wave function in the center-of-mass frame of the proton-neutron system. The tagged structure functions are computed in the impulse approximation. The momentum and spin distribution of the active nucleon are controlled by the deuteron polarization and the detected spectator momentum (𝐷/𝑆 wave ratio). The cross section and spin asymmetries are evaluated for general deuteron polarization (vector and tensor, longitudinal and transverse) as functions of the spectator momentum. Tensor-polarized spin asymmetries of order unity are achieved for spectator momenta of approximately 300 MeV, which select configurations with a large 𝐷 wave. Sum rules for the tagged spin structure functions are derived. The results can be used for simulations of spectator tagging in future polarized fixed-target experiments (Jefferson Lab) or at the Electron-Ion Collider.

Systematic input scheme for many-boson Hamiltonians with applications to the two-dimensional 𝜙 4 theory

We develop a novel, systematic input scheme for many-boson Hamiltonians in order to solve field theory problems within the light-front Hamiltonian formalism via quantum computing. We present our discussion of this input scheme based on the light-front Hamiltonian of the two-dimensional ϕ 4 theory. In our input scheme, we employ a set of quantum registers, where each register encodes the occupation of a distinct boson mode as binaries. We squeeze the boson operators of each mode and present the Hamiltonian in terms of unique combinations of the squeezed-boson operators. We design the circuit modules for these unique combinations. Based on these circuit modules, we block encode the many-boson Hamiltonian utilizing the idea of quantum walk. For demonstration purposes, we present the spectral calculations of the Hamiltonian utilizing the hybrid quantum-classical symmetry-adapted quantum Krylov subspace diagonalization algorithm based on our input scheme, where the quantum computations are performed with the IBM Qiskit quantum simulator. The results of the hybrid calculations agree with exact results. Here, we can incorporate the input scheme in this work with the input scheme for many-fermion Hamiltonians; they jointly offer new pathways to solving the structure and dynamics of more general field theory problems on future fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Tensor-polarized parton density in the $N → Δ$ transition

The generalized parton distributions for transitions between baryon states with different masses have a forward limit in which they behave as parton densities (light-front momentum transfer Δ + , Δ T = 0, energy transfer Δ - ≠ 0). These "transition parton densities" can realize spin/isospin quantum numbers not accessible in the ground-state nucleon. The N → Δ transition gives rise to a new parton density proportional to the 1/2 → 3/2 spin transition tensor. Its properties are derived, and its magnitude is estimated in the chiral quark-soliton model based on the large-N c limit of QCD.

Ab initio many-fermion structure calculations on a quantum computer

To overcome the limitations of existing algorithms for solving self-bound quantum many-body problems—such as those encountered in nuclear and particle physics—that access only a restricted subset of energy levels and provide limited structural information, we introduce and demonstrate a novel quantum-classical approach capable of resolving the complete bound-state spectrum. This method also provides the total angular momentum 𝐽 associated with each eigenstate. Here, our approach is based on expressing the Hamiltonian in second-quantized form within a novel input model combined with a scan scheme, enabling broad applicability to configuration-interaction calculations across diverse fields. We apply this hybrid method to compute, for the first time, the bound-state spectrum together with corresponding 𝐽 values of 20 O using a realistic strong-interaction Hamiltonian. Our approach applies to hadron spectra and 𝐽 values solved in the relativistic basis light-front quantization approach.

Impossibility of obtaining time-independent, three-dimensional, spherically symmetric densities of confined systems of relativistically moving constituents

The quantum-mechanical definition of probability, the uncertainty principle, and Poincaré invariance provide strong basic restrictions on the ability to define spatial densities associated with form factors describing the properties of confined systems of relativistically moving constituents. Despite this, many papers ignore one or more of these restrictions. Here I show how to obtain time-independent , two-dimensional densities that are consistent with the stated restrictions. This is done using the light-front, infinite momentum frame formalism. Two-dimensional density interpretations of the axial-vector form factor and all three gravitational form factors is obtained. The resulting mass radius is smaller than the charge radius. Additionally, an expression of a two-dimensional mass density related to the trace of the energy momentum tensor is obtained. I also show that all known methods for finding three-dimensional densities—using the Breit frame, Abel transformations, Wigner distributions, and spherically symmetric wave packets with vanishing spatial extent—violate the basic restrictions in different ways. Furthermore, the use of the latter leads to densities that vanish almost everywhere in space as time increases from an initial value.

Complete definition of 𝑁 →Δ transition generalized parton distributions

We revisit the definition of the leading-twist chiral-even generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for 𝑁 →Δ baryon transitions. We identify and address deficiencies in previous definitions of the transition GPDs inspired by the transition form factors of the vector and axial vector currents. Through systematic analysis of all possible covariant structures, respecting discrete symmetries and the baryon spinor equations of motion, we derive complete sets of independent structures for the transition matrix elements of the vector and axial vector partonic operators. They contain additional structures proportional to the light-cone vector, corresponding to transition GPDs of vanishing first moment, which were not included in previous parametrizations. Their presence is confirmed independently by the light-front multipole expansion and the cross-channel SO(3) partial-wave analysis of the transition matrix elements. Our analysis provides a complete definition of the 𝑁 →Δ transition GPDs for use in theoretical and phenomenological studies.

Quark counting, Drell-Yan West, and the pion wave function

The relation between the pion's quark distribution function, 𝑞⁡(𝑥), its light-front wave function, and the elastic charge form factor, 𝐹⁡(Δ 2 ), is explored. The square of the leading-twist pion wave function at a special probe scale, 𝜁 𝐻 , is determined using models and Poincaré covariance from realistic results for 𝑞⁡(𝑥). This wave function is then used to compute form factors with the result that the Drell-Yan-West and quark counting relationships are not satisfied. A new relationship between 𝑞⁡(𝑥) and 𝐹⁡(Δ 2 ) is proposed.

Pion gravitational form factors in the QCD instanton vacuum. I

The pion form factors of the QCD energy-momentum tensor (EMT) are studied in the instanton liquid model (ILM) of the QCD vacuum. In this approach, the breaking of conformal symmetry is encoded in the form of stronger-than-Poisson fluctuations in the number of instantons. For the trace of the EMT, it is shown that the gluonic trace anomaly term contributes half the pion mass, with the other half coming from the quark-mass-dependent σ term. The Q 2 dependence of the form factors is governed by glueball and scalar meson exchanges. For the EMT, the spin-0 (trace) and spin-2 (traceless rank-2 tensor) form factors are computed at next-to-leading order in the instanton density using effective quark operators. Relations between the gluon and quark contributions to the EMT form factors are derived. The form factors are also expressed in terms of the pion light-front wave functions in the ILM. The results at the low resolution scale of the inverse instanton size are evolved to higher scales using the renormalization group equation. The ILM results compare well with those of recent lattice QCD calculations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Polarized dipole scattering amplitudes meet the valence quark model

The recently revised small- x helicity evolution [], resumming the double-logarithmic factor, α s ln 2 ( 1 / x ) , allows for the study of helicity distributions of quarks and gluons at small Bjorken x , corresponding to high center-of-mass energy. In this work, we calculate the moderate- x initial conditions in the regime, α s ln 2 ( 1 / x ) ∼ 1 , for the small- x helicity evolution using a light-front valence quark model of the proton, which provides additional physical information about the target. The perturbative emission and absorption of a gluon by the valence quarks are also included. The results, given in Eqs. (35), provide a new set of initial conditions with a significantly reduced number of free parameters than conventional models []. Consequently, the predictive power of small- x helicity evolution is expected to improve once the initial conditions from this work are incorporated. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Dissecting a strongly coupled scalar nucleon

We continue our investigation of the stress within a strongly coupled scalar nucleon, and now dissect the gravitational form factors into contributions from its constituents, the (mock) nucleon and the (mock) pion. The computation is based on a nonperturbative solution of the scalar Yukawa model in the light-front Hamiltonian formalism with a Fock sector expansion, including up to one nucleon and two pions. By employing the “good currents” T i + + , T i + − and T i 12 , we extract the full set of gravitational form factors A i , D i , c ¯ i without the contamination of the spurious form factors and free of uncanceled UV divergences. With these results, we decompose the mass of the system into its constituents and compute the matter and mechanical radii, gaining insights into the strongly coupled system.
