H2A-Lite (Hydrogen Analysis Lite Production Model) [SWR-24-69]

Within H2A-Lite, users can provide a minimal number of inputs—such as hydrogen production technology of choice —to produce estimates about characteristic scale, capital, and operations. Price projections for energy and feedstock are based on the Energy Information Administration's Annual Energy Outlook 2022, AEO2022 Reference case. The model additionally allows users to override technology default values to adapt to specific technology scales or regional energy prices. As output, H2A-Lite provides cost breakdown from rigorous financial analysis as well as greenhouse gas and criteria pollutant emissions characteristics.

BLAST-Lite (Battery Lifetime Analysis and Simulation Tool - Lite) [SWR-22-69] Related to: BLAST aka: BLAST-Py

Battery Lifetime Analysis and Simulation Toolsuite (BLAST) provides a library of battery lifetime and degradation models for various commercial lithium-ion batteries from recent years. Degradation models are identified from publicly available lab-based aging data using NREL's battery life model identification toolkit. The battery life models predicted the expected lifetime of batteries used in mobile or stationary applications as functions of their temperature and use (state-of-charge, depth-of-discharge, and charge/discharge rates). Model implementation is in both Python and MATLAB programming languages. The MATLAB code also provides example applications (stationary storage and EV), climate data, and simple thermal management options. For more information on battery health diagnostics, prediction, and optimization, see NREL's Battery Lifespan webpage.

REopt Lite Geothermal Heat Pump Design Requirements

This document describes the design requirements for the geothermal heat pump (GHP) module being added to the existing REopt Lite web tool. This document describes the purpose, users, and functional requirements to which the modified web tool shall conform. This document will be revised, as required, throughout the development phase with consensus between the Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) and NREL. The GHP module will expand existing REopt Lite capabilities to include techno-economic optimization of GHP systems, either stand alone, or integrated with the other existing technology types, namely solar photovoltaics (PV), wind power, battery energy storage, thermal energy storage, combined hear and power (CHP), and absorption chiller. Included in this submission are links to the REopt Lite web tool and open-source Git-Hub page. The REopt Lite tool can also be accessed directly via the NREL Developer Network. A link is also provided for the REopt report that overviews the module's capabilities.

Lighting Technology Energy Solutions (LiTES) (Final Technical Report)

The Lighting Technologies Energy Solutions (LiTES) Program Final Technical Report is a collaborative effort between NextEnergy, Consumers Energy, DTE Energy (DTE) and the Detroit Joint Apprentice Training Center (DJATC) to evaluate customer and contractor experiences deploying advanced/networked lighting controls systems (ALC/NLC). The LiTES Program, funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE), sought to reduce energy use in small and medium commercial buildings (SMCB) by accelerating the adoption of ALC/NLC through contractor training and technology deployment. Leveraging recommendations already outlined by the Design Lights Consortium Commercial Advanced Lighting Controls (DLC CALC) project, NextEnergy led an effort to train contractors, evaluate the experience of ALC/NLC demonstration projects, identify opportunities to reduce market barriers, and accelerate the increased adoption of ALC/NLC technologies within SMCB. The LiTES Program defined SMCB as commercial buildings under 100,000 square feet. The LiTES Program efforts also included evaluating current ALC/NLC utility incentives, piloting ALC/NLC incentives specific to SMCB, and identifying opportunities to better align utility incentives with current ALC/NLC technology to support accelerating the adoption of ALC/NLC in SMCB. This report shares the survey results and M&V data findings, including energy savings, market barriers, experience of installations, impact of incentives/financing programs and provides recommendations for the increased deployment of ALC/NLC systems in small and medium commercial buildings. Utility survey results, incentive alternatives and recommendations, including a cost benefit analysis outlining energy and economic impacts of the provided ALC/NLC incentives on SMCB projects are also provided.

REopt ® Lite Overview - Resilience Analysis: Clear Sky Tampa Bay [Slides]

Through the Solar Energy Innovation Network (SEIN), the Clear Sky Tampa Bay team, led by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC), developed a toolkit to help local governments prioritize sites for solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery energy storage in the context of resilience and emergency management. At a high level, the Clear Sky Tampa Bay process involves: (1) Identifying sites based on community resilience needs and priorities ("Where do we need a resilient energy solution?"); (2) Screening and prioritizing sites for solar PV and storage suitability based on site conditions and other factors; and (3) Using REopt Lite to screen down-selected facilities to prioritize sites based on resilience project economics. This slide deck focuses on Step 3 above, and provides a general overview of REopt Lite and suggestions and examples tailored to the Clear Sky Tampa Bay team about how to use REopt Lite for additional analysis.

REopt Lite Overview & Training Exercise

This training exercise provides users with an introduction to and hands-on, interactive exploration of REopt Lite's capabilities. REopt Lite is a free, publicly available techno-economic optimization web tool for distributed energy systems, developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). REopt Lite helps organizations evaluate the economic viability of grid-connected solar photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, and battery storage; identify system sizes and battery dispatch strategies to minimize energy costs; and estimate how long a system can sustain critical load during a grid outage. The model is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program based in an underlying application programming interface (API) that is also free and publicly available. This training activity is structured as a group exercise. Participants split into eight groups and each group is assigned a different hypothetical site to model and assess the opportunity for solar PV + battery storage. Groups work together to develop results for their site and then re-convene to compare and discuss results, inputs/drivers of the analysis, and other factors impacting the decision-making process for behind-the-meter solar PV and battery storage.

REopt Lite User Manual

REopt Lite evaluates the economic viability of grid-connected solar photovoltaics, wind, combined heat and power, and electric and thermal storage at commercial and small industrial sites. It allows building owners to identify the system sizes and dispatch strategies that minimize the site’s life cycle cost of energy. REopt Lite also estimates the amount of time on-site generation and storage can sustain the site's critical load during a grid outage and allows the user the choice of optimizing for energy resilience. It is primarily used to inform project development decisions and to support research on the factors that drive project feasibility for market development and policy analysis. It is available through a web interface, application programing interface, and open-source code. This user manual provides an overview of the model, including its capabilities and typical applications; inputs and outputs; economic calculations; technology descriptions; and model parameters, variables, and equations. The model is highly flexible and is continually evolving to meet the needs of each analysis. Therefore, this report is not an exhaustive description of all capabilities, but rather a summary of the core components of the model.
