A diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic study of adsorbed hydrazines

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy of fuel hydrazines adsorbed on silica, silica-alumina and alimina surfaces indicates that the primary surface-hydrazine interaction is hydrogen bonding. Hydrazine, on adsorption to a deuterated silica surface, undergoes a rapid H/D exchange with deuterated surface silanol (Si-OD) groups. Adsorption equilibria are rapidly established at room temperature. Monomethylhydrazine and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine are similarly adsorbed. On adsorption, the C-H stretching and methyl deformation modes of the methylhydrazines are shifted to higher frequencies by 10 to 20 cm(-1). These shifts are postulated to be due to changes in the lone-pair electro-density on the adjacent nitrogen atom and an electronegativity effect.

Theoretical characterization of the reaction CH3 +OH yields CH3OH yeilds products: The (1)CH2 + H2O, H2 + HCOH, and H2 + H2CO channels

The potential energy surface (PES) for the CH3OH system has been characterized for the (1)CH2 + H2O, H2 + HCOH, and H2 + H2CO product channels using complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) gradient calculations to determine the stationary point geometries and frequencies followed by CASSCF/internally contracted configuration-interaction (CCI) calculations to refine the energetics. The (1)CH2 + H2O channel is found to have no barrier. The long range interaction is dominated by the dipole-dipole term, which orients the respective dipole moments parallel to each other but pointing in opposite directions. At shorter separations there is a dative bond structure in which a water lone pair donates into the empty a" orbital of CH2. Subsequent insertion of CH2 into an OH bond of water have barriers located at -5.2 kcal/mol and 1.7 kcal/mol, respectively, with respect to CH3 + OH. From comparison of the computed energetics of the reactants and products to known thermochemical data it is estimated that the computed PES is accurate to plus or minus 2 kcal/mol.

The Successive H2O Binding Energies for Fe(H2O)n(+)

The binding energy, computed using density functional theory (DFT), are in good agreement with experiment. The bonding is electrostatic (charge-dipole) in origin for all systems. The structures are therefore determined mostly by metal-ligand and ligand-ligand repulsion. The computed structure for FeH2O(+) is C(2v) where sp hybridization is important in reducing the Fe-H2O repulsion. Fe(H2O)2(+) has D2d symmetry where sdo hybridization is the primary factor leading to the linear O-Fe-O geometry. The bonding in Fe(H2O)3(+) and Fe(H2O)4(+) are very complex because ligand-ligand and metal-ligand repulsion, both for the in-plane and out-of-plane water lone-pair orbitals, are important.

Organic Molecules On the Surfaces of Iapetus and Phoebe

Absorption bands of both aliphatic and aromatic organic molecules are found in the reflectance spectra of Saturn satellites Iapetus, Phoebe, and Hyperion obtained with the Cassini Visible-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS). The VIMS data do not fully resolve the individual bands of C-H functional groups specific to particular molecules, but instead show absorption envelopes representing blended clusters of the bands of aromatic (approximately 3.28 microns) and aliphatic (approximately 3.4 microns) hydrocarbons known in spectra of interstellar dust. In Cruikshank et al. (2014), we matched components of the unresolved hydrocarbon band envelopes with clusters of bands of a range of functional groups in specific types of organic compounds (e.g., normal and N-substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, olefins, cycloalkanes, and molecules with lone-pair interactions of N and O with CH3+). In the work reported here, we revisit the spectra of Iapetus and Phoebe using VIMS data processed with improved radiometric and wavelength calibration (denoted RC19). The band envelopes of both aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons are now more clearly defined, corroborating the provisional assignment of specific classes of molecules in Cruikshank et al. 2014, but permitting a more reliable quantitative assessment of the relative contributions of those classes, and a revision to the earlier estimate of the ratio of the abundances of aromatic to aliphatic molecules.

Superconductivity in the Sn-Ba-Sr-Y-Cu-O system

Since Bednorz and Muller discovered high-T(sub c) superconductivity in the La-Ba-Cu-O compound, several families of superconducting oxides have been synthesized. Here, researchers report the results of search for superconductivity in the compounds based on tin, which has a lone electron pair like Bi, Tl, Pb. The following compounds were synthesized: Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ca1Mg1Cu3Ox. The initial components were oxides and carbonates of the appropriate elements. Standard firing-grinding procedure was used. Final heating was carried out at 960 C during 12 hours. Then the samples were cooled inside the furnace. All the synthesis cycles were carried out in air atmosphere. Among the synthesized compounds only Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox showed remarkable conductivity. Other compounds were practically dielectrics. Presence of a possible superconductivity in Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox was defined by using the Meissner effect. At low temperature a deviation from paramagnetic behavior is observed. The hysteresis loops obtained at lower temperatures undoubtly testify to the presence of a superconductive phase in the sample. However, the part of the superconductive phase in the Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox ceramic turned out to be small, less than 2 percent, which agrees with the estimation from magnetic data. In order to increase the content of the superconductive phase two-valent cations Ba, Sr were partially substituted by univalent (K) and three-valent ones (Y).
