Crustal evolution inferred from Apollo magnetic measurements

Magnetic field and solar wind plasma density measurements were analyzed to determine the scale size characteristics of remanent fields at the Apollo 12, 15, and 16 landing sites. Theoretical model calculations of the field-plasma interaction, involving diffusion of the remanent field into the solar plasma, were compared to the data. The information provided by all these experiments shows that remanent fields over most of the lunar surface are characterized by spatial variations as small as a few kilometers. Large regions (50 to 100 km) of the lunar crust were probably uniformly magnetized during early crustal evolution. Bombardment and subsequent gardening of the upper layers of these magnetized regions left randomly oriented, smaller scale (5 to 10 km) magnetic sources close to the surface. The larger scale size fields of magnitude approximately 0.1 gammas are measured by the orbiting subsatellite experiments and the small scale sized remanent fields of magnitude approximately 100 gammas are measured by the surface experiments.

Notes on remanent magnetization measurements in superconductors and hard ferromagnets

Data on zero applied field measurements of remanent magnetization and magnetic relaxation in a BCS superconductor LuNi 2 B 2 C and several hard ferromagnets are presented and compared. Apparent similarities and differences, in particular in Thermoremanent Magnetization (TRM) - like, Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (IRM) - like, and remanent magnetization measurements with zigzag temperature sweep measurements are outlined. It is discussed how these results could be relevant for the magnetization measurements in diamond anvil cells.

Magnetic Measurements of Fermilab Rapid-Cycling Booster Gradient Magnets

Fermilab is upgrading its Booster synchrotron to increase ramp rate and intensity. This is part of the Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II) that will allow the Main Injector to achieve proton beam power of 1.2 MW within the next few years. This upgrade includes running the 55-year-old Booster magnets at 20 Hz instead of the usual 15 Hz, and construction of some shorter and wider aperture versions of these combined-function gradient magnets. Magnetic measurements were performed to characterize the present 15 Hz AC performance, and then again with 20 Hz ramp cycle to ensure performance and compatibility in this new operating regime. A 3 m-long curved flat-coil was developed for these measurements using Printed Circuit Board (PCB) technology. The probe also has a separate 0.5 m-long body-field probe, allowing integral, body, and end fields to be measured across 100 mm of the magnet aperture. The sampling rate for these measurements during the AC cycle was 200 kHz, and field resolution was better than 0.01%. Details of the probe, measurements, and results are presented.

Magnetic measurements of coronal holes during 1975-1980

Low latitude coronal holes are found to contain three times more flux near sunspot maximum than near minimum, despite the similarity of sizes in the two conditions, by measurements of photospheric magnetic fluxes and average field strengths beneath 33 coronal holes observed on 63 occasions during 1975-1980. Average magnetic field strengths ranged from 3-36 G near sunspot maximum, and 1-7 G near minimum. It is suggested that the low latitude coronal holes received a proportion of the extra flux available at low latitudes near sunspot maximum. The coronal hole magnetic measurements are presented in tabular form.

A New Magnetic Measurement System for the Future Low Emittance NSLS-II Storage Ring

A new magnetic measurement system is under construc-tion at BNL for accurate field harmonic measurements and fiducialization of magnets for a future upgrade of the NSLS- II storage ring. The entire storage ring is envi-sioned to be replaced with a new lattice concept, known as Complex Bend, which superimposes dipole and high-gradient quadrupole fields. The magnetic measurement system will use rotating wire and a PCB rotating coil specifically designed for small-aperture (< 15 mm) high gradient magnets. In this paper we describe in detail the mechanical design and the data acquisition hardware and software.

A technique for measuring magnetic fields on solar-type stars

A method is developed and tested by which magnetic-field strengths and area filling-factors of magnetic regions on late-type stars may be inferred from high-resolution, absorption-line profiles that have been broadened by the Zeeman effect. The technique involves fitting such profiles with a triplet of components, the shape of which is derived from profiles of lines of low Zeeman sensitivity. Tests of the systematic and random errors indicate that such magnetic flux measurements have an uncertainty of 20% for stars with field strengths of 2000 gauss if at least 10% of the stellar surface contains magnetic regions.

Permeameter for high-temperature magnetic measurements

A permeameter is described that measures the magnetizing force and the corresponding magnetic induction up to 1000 C. The two symmetrical yokes are made of an alloy of 9 percent iron, 91 percent cobalt. A coil surrounding the specimen supplies a magnetizing force of up to 100 oersteds. The instrument uses the magnetic potentiometer principle to cancel the effects of the reluctance of the yoke and the joint gaps. Very close agreement was obtained at room temperature when compared to an MH type permeameter. The effect of temperature on the normal induction curves for the yoke material is also presented.

Phase diagram of CeSb 2 from magnetostriction and magnetization measurements: Evidence for ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic states

Cerium diantimonide (CeSb 2 ) is one of a family of rare-earth-based magnetic materials that exhibit metamagnetism, enabling control of the magnetic ground state through an applied magnetic field. At low temperatures, CeSb 2 hosts a rich phase diagram with multiple magnetically ordered phases for many of which the order parameter is only poorly understood. In this work, we report a study of its metamagnetic properties by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and magnetization measurements. We use STM measurements to characterize the sample magnetostriction with subpicometer resolution from magnetic field and temperature sweeps. This allows us to directly assess the bulk phase diagram as a function of field and temperature and relate spectroscopic features from tunneling spectroscopy to bulk phases. Our magnetostriction and magnetization measurements indicate that the low-temperature ground state at zero field is ferrimagnetic. Quasiparticle interference mapping shows evidence for a reconstruction of the electronic structure close to the Fermi energy upon entering the magnetically ordered phase.

DC Magnetics Measurement System Design

This report will detail the updates to the magnetics measurement system design and testing procedures that are required for performing static (DC) magnetics testing of future flight hardware. An older magnetics testing system had to be integrated with new procedures and hardware to meet the demands of future testing programs and accommodate an upcoming magnetics tests. The next test will be for the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R), which will verify that the SAFT Battery component meets its specifications for magnetic cleanliness. The satellite is scheduled to launch in 2015 with magnetics testing to be completed on the battery in November 2012.

Designing a Magnetic Measurement Data Acquisition and Control System With Reuse in Mind: A Rotating Coil System Example

Accelerator magnet test facilities frequently need to measure different magnets on differently equipped test stands and with different instrumentation. Designing a modular and highly reusable system that combines flexibility built-in at the architectural level as well as on the component level addresses this need. Specification of the backbone of the system, with the interfaces and dataflow for software components and core hardware modules, serves as a basis for building such a system. The design process and implementation of an extensible magnetic measurement data acquisition and control system are described, including techniques for maximizing the reuse of software. The discussion is supported by showing the application of this methodology to constructing two dissimilar systems for rotating coil measurements, both based on the same architecture and sharing core hardware modules and many software components. The first system is for production testing 10 m long cryo-assemblies containing two MQXFA quadrupole magnets for the high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider and the second for testing IQC conventional quadrupole magnets in support of the accelerator system at Fermilab.
