Weak localization as a probe of intervalley coherence in graphene multilayers

Spontaneous intervalley coherence is suspected in several different graphene multilayer systems, but is difficult to confirm because of a paucity of convenient experimental signatures. Here we suggest that magneto-conductance features associated with quantum corrections to Drude conductivity can serve as a smoking gun for intervalley coherence that does not break time-reversal symmetry. In this class of ordered multilayer quantum transport corrections can produce weak localization or weak antilocalization, depending on whether the valley order belongs to the orthogonal or symplectic symmetry class. Our analysis motivates low-temperature weak-field magnetoresistance measurements in graphene multilayers in which time-reversal invariant intervalley coherent order is conjectured.

Origin of Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling in 2D and 3D Lead Iodide Perovskites

isaWhittaker-Brooks2 & Tho D. Nguyen1* We studied spin dynamics of charge carriers in the superlattice-like Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid lead iodide perovskite semiconductors, 2D (BA)2(MA)Pb2I7 (with MA= CH3NH3, and BA= CH3(CH2)3NH3), and 3D MAPbI3 using the magnetic field effect (MFE) on conductivity and electroluminescence in their light emitting diodes (LEDs) at cryogenic temperatures. The semiconductors with distinct structural/ bulk inversion symmetry breaking, when combined with colossal intrinsic spin–orbit coupling (SOC), theoretically give rise to giant Rashba-type SOC. We found that the magneto-conductance (MC) magnitude increases monotonically with the emission intensity and saturates at ≈0.05% and 0.11% for the MAPbI3 and (BA)2(MA)Pb2I7, respectively. The magneto-electroluminescence (MEL) response with similar line shapes as the MC response has a significantly larger magnitude, and essentially stays constant at ≈0.22% and ≈0.20% for MAPbI3 and (BA)2(MA)Pb2I7, respectively. The sign and magnitude of the MC and MEL responses can be quantitatively explained in the framework of the Δg-based excitonic model using rate equations. Remarkably, the width of the MEL response in those materials linearly increases with increasing the applied electric field, where the Rashba coefficient in (BA)2(MA) Pb2I7 is estimated to be about 7 times larger than that in MAPbI3. Our studies might have significant impact on future development of electrically-controlled spin logic devices via Rashba-like effects

Tuning of the magnetotransport properties of a spin-polarized 2D electron system using visible light

We report on the effects of visible light on the low temperature electronic properties of the spin-polarized two dimensional electron system (2DES) formed at the interfaces between LaAlO 3 , EuTiO 3 and (001) SrTiO 3 . A strong, persistent modulation of both longitudinal and transverse conductivity was obtained using light emitting diodes (LEDs) with emissions at different wavelengths in the visible spectrum range. In particular, Hall effect data show that visible light induces a non-volatile electron filling of bands with mainly 3 dxz,yz character, and at the same time an enhancement of the anomalous Hall effect associated to the magnetic properties of the system. Accordingly, a suppression of the weak-anti localization corrections to the magneto-conductance is found, which correlates with an enhancement of the spin-polarization and of the ferromagnetic character of 2DES. The results establish the LED-induced photo-doping as a viable route for the control of the ground state properties of artificial spin-polarized oxide 2DES.

Quantum Transport in 2D Semiconductors

Leveraging progress in synthesis of ultra-pure transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) crystals, our team has made key breakthroughs in the study of quantum states in two-dimensional (2D) TMD semiconductors. Using a capacitance spectroscopy technique, we have observed the first signatures of fractional quantum Hall states in monolayer WSe 2 and clear signatures of interlayer exciton condensates in bilayer WSe 2 . In a transport study of bilayer WSe 2 , we report observation of spin-selective magneto-conductivity in WSe 2 . To improve electrical transport studies, we have focused on metal-TMD contacts by studying the behavior of metal-TMD contacts in the clean limit, and developing a new contact doping technique that achieves Ohmic contact down to low temperature and low carrier density. Using this new technique, we study electrical transport in monolayer WSe 2 down to low temperature and low carrier density, finding record-high hole mobility and evidence of a metal-insulator transition at low density. Under high magnetic fields, we observe clear signatures of fractional quantum Hall effect in transport for the first time in a TMD.
