Propagation through a slab of irregularities in a magneto-ionic medium.

A theory is developed to describe the propagation of characteristic waves through an infinite slab of irregularities in a magneto-ionic medium. The theory makes use of the asymptotic Green's dyadic. The results show that mode conversion is possible through scattering from irregularities in an anisotropic background. Some special cases are discussed and an example is given.

A theory of scattering from irregularities in a magneto-ionic medium.

Attempt to determine what effect the anisotropy of the background medium will have on the scattering of electromagnetic waves from ionospheric irregularities. A Green's function is used to solve the scattered power using a certain bistatic geometry. Since the medium is anisotropic, cross-mode scattering in addition to self-mode scattering is possible. Several examples are given.

A study of selected radiation and propagation problems related to antennas and probes in magneto-ionic media

Research consisted of computations toward the solution of the problem of the current distribution on a cylindrical antenna in a magnetoplasma. The case of an antenna parallel to the applied magnetic field was investigated. A systematic method of asymptotic expansion was found which simplifies the solution in the general case by giving the field of a dipole even at relatively short range. Some useful properties of the dispersion surfaces in a lossy medium have also been found. A laboratory experiment was directed toward evaluating nonlinear effects, such as those due to power level, bias voltage and electron heating. The problem of reflection and transmission of waves in an electron heated plasma was treated theoretically. The profile inversion problem has been pursued. Some results are very encouraging, however, the general question of stability of the solution remains unsolved.

Interactions of a tethered satellite system with the ionosphere

The Tethered Satellite System will be the first large structure deployed in space. It will react strongly with the magneto-ionic medium of the Earth's ionosphere and will thus be valuable experimental tool. Experiments planned for the structure are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the structures ability to excite a large variety of wave phenomena in the ionosphere using its electromotive force.

Whistlers

Theoretical models of ionospheric whistler phenomena are reviewed and compared with experimental data. Whistlers were characterized as lightning discharges through a dispersive medium in 1919, with the first observed appearance of whistler noises detected in telephone communications. Magneto-ionic theory is used to characterize whistlers, with the Appleton-Hartree equations applied to the wave fields arising from lightning interactions with ionospheric plasma. Large values of the refractive index or slow propagation speeds give rise to the whistler mode, i.e., propagation of the wave through plasmas of any density. Propagation through the ionosphere is examined with the Snell's law, and account is taken of absorption and the necessity of obtaining full-wave solutions. Finally, theories are under development to explain the occurrence of ducting, i.e., guiding of the whistler wave by field-aligned plasma density irregularities.

The saturation of the electron-cyclotron maser instability and the interpretation of solar millisecond spikes

A self-consistent numeric two-dimensional code of the kinetic wave-particle equations developed to investigate the maser dynamics in the solar context is applied to solar millisecond-spike observations in order to improve the diagnostic capabilities of the theory of the electron-cyclotron maser instablitity. Attention is given to the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field selecting magneto-ionic modes with relatively short saturation lengths and suppressing mechanisms such as collisional deflection, free-free absorption, and gyroresonance absorption. The time scales of maser saturation in respect to time scales of global particle changes in a magnetic loop are covered, relevant observations of solar millisecond spikes are described, and the interpretation in terms of physical parameters deduced from the quasi-linear maser simulations are presented. It is demonstrated that the quasi-linear simulations make it possible to constrain the physical parameters from the observed time scale and frequency.

Plasma Motor Generator (PMG) electrodynamic tether experiment

The Plasma Motor Generator (PMG) flight of June 26, 1993 has been the most sophisticated and most successful mission that has been carried out thus far with an electrodynamic tether. Three papers from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Washington, DC concerned with the PMG, submitted at the Fourth International Space Conference on Tethers in Space, in Washington, DC, in April 1995, are contained in this document. The three papers are (1) Electromagnetic interactions between the PMG tether and the magneto-ionic medium of the Ionosphere; (2) Tether-current-voltage characteristics, as determined by the Hollow Cathode Operation Modes; and (3) Hawaii-Hilo ground observations on the occasion for the PMG flight of June 23, 1993.
