Magnetic and magneto-optical properties and domain structure of Co/Pd multilayers

The domain structure of Co/Pd(1.6/6.3 A)xN multilayers and its relation to the bulk magnetic properties of the samples were studied. The Co/Pd multilayers were deposited by rf and dc magnetron sputtering onto different substrates. It was found that magnetic and magnetooptical properties and domain structure of the multilayers were affected by total film thickness and substrate condition. Magnetization, coercivity, and anisotropy of the films decreased significantly as the film thickness dropped below 100 A. However, Kerr rotation angle had a maximum at the same thickness. The width of the domain structure increased with the decrease of the film thickness attaining the single domain state at N = 10. The initial curves in Co/Pd multilayers were found to depend on demagnetization process. The samples demagnetized by inplane field showed the largest difference between initial curves and the corresponding parts of the loops. Different domain structures were observed in the samples demagnetized by perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields.

Processing FeB03 glass-ceramics in space

The possibility of preparing FeBO3 glass-ceramic in space is explored. A transparent glass-ceramic of FeBO3, due to its unique properties could be an excellent material for magneto-optic applications which currently utilize high price materials such as single crystals of Ga-YIG. The unique magneto-optic properties of FeBO3 were found to come from glass-ceramic but not from the glass form. It was anticipated and later confirmed that the FeBO3 glass-ceramics could not be prepared on earth. Phase separation and iron valence reduction, were identified as the two terrestrial manufacturing obstacles. Since the phase separation problem could be overcome by space processing, the preparation of FeBO3 glass-ceramic in space appears attractive.

A new and comprehensive dielectric tensor characterization instrument is presented for characterization of magneto-optical recording media and non-magnetic thin films. Random and systematic errors of the system are studied. A series of TbFe, TbFeCo, and Co/Pt samples with different composition and thicknesses are characterized for their optical and magneto-optical properties. The optical properties of several non-magnetic films are also measured.

Characterization of magneto-optical media

Amorphous rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloys and compositionally modulated TM/TM films were characterized in terms of their magnetic, magneto-optic, and galvanomagnetic properties. The loop tracer, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Rutherford Backscattering (RBS) facility were used to characterize and analyze the various properties of these magneto-optical storage media. Kerr effect, ellipticity, coercivity, and anisotropy at various temperatures, magnetoresistance, and resistivity are among the properties measured in Co/Pt films, Co/Pd films, and TbFeCo films.

Effect of patch borders on coercivity in amorphous rare earth-transition metal thin films

The coercivity at the micron scale is a very important property of magneto-optical media. It is a key factor that determines the magnetic domain wall movement and domain reversal. How the coercivity is influenced by a special type of patch borders is discussed. Patch formation is a general phenomenon in growth processes of amorphous rare earth transition metal thin films. Different patches may stem from different seeds and the patch borders are formed when they merge. Though little is known about the exact properties of the borders, we may expect that the exchange interaction at the patch border is weaker than that within a patch, since there is usually a spatial gap between two patches. Computer simulations were performed on a 2-D hexagonal lattice consisting of 37 complete patches with random shape and size. From the series of simulations we may conclude that the domain in the patch with borders of 30 percent exchange strength can expand most easily to the whole lattice, because the exchange strength can expand most easily to the whole lattice, because the exchange strength of the border is not too high to prevent the domain from growing within the patch and it is not too low to prevent the domain from expanding beyond the patch.

Motion of Cesium Atoms in the One-Dimensional Magneto-Optical Trap

The force to which Cs atoms are subjected in the one-dimensional magneto-optical trap (lD-MOT) is calculated, and properties of this force are discussed. Several methods to increase the number of Cs atoms in the lD-MOT are presented on the basis of the analysis of the capture and escape of Cs atoms in the ID-MOT.

Test of the magneto optical filter during the comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts on Jupiter. A Doppler signal detected?

The observations made in July 1994 on the impact of fragment A of the comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter are described. The instrumentation used was a magneto-optical filter, acting as a two-channel filter. The data showed a double-peak transient which occurred after the impact, and whose general properties indicated a true jovian origin. The peaks appear in absorption. A numerical simulation can explain the main characteristics of the observed signal where the two peaks have the same polarity and appear only in the channel at shorter wavelengths. The simulation carried out appeared to indicate that the observed signal could be produced by the combination of shock waves and the expanding material with a velocity of 13 +/- 8 km/s. This implies that two separate impacts may have been observed. The developed simulation can be extended to predict long term effects.

Magneto-optic superlattice thin films: Fabrication, structural and magnetic characterization

During this quarter studies were extended to determine the electronic contribution to the perpendicular interface anisotropy in Co-based multilayers. Using in situ Kerr effect measurements, the influences of different transition metals (TM = Ag, Au, Cu, and Pd) on the magnetic properties of single-crystal Co films grown on Pd (111) and Au (111) surfaces are investigated. Last quarter the discovery of a large peak in the perpendicular anisotropy when approximately one monolayer of Cu or Ag is deposited on the Co surface was reported. We now have added a computer-controlled stepper-motor drive to our MBE sample transfer mechanism. The motor allows us to move the sample at a constant velocity from behind a shutter during deposition. The film, therefore, is deposited as a wedge with a linear variation of thickness across the substrate. In this way, a continuous range of coverage on a single sample is studied. The stepper motor also provides the necessary control for precisely positioning the sample in the laser beam for Kerr effect measurements at the different coverages.

Stimulated electronic transition concept for an erasable optical memory

A new concept for an erasable optical memory is demonstrated using stimulated electronic transition (SET). Large bandgap semiconductors are suitable materials for the SET medium. The properties of MgS:Eu,Sm and SrS:Eu,Sm as possible media for the SET process are investigated. Quantum storage is achieved in the form of charges in deep levels in the medium and stimulated radiative recombination is used as the reading process. Unlike magneto-optic (M-O) and phase change (PC) processes, optical writing, reading and erasing are achieved without localized heating. The SET process will have an inherently faster data transfer rate and a higher storage density, and the medium will be more durable than the M-O and PC media. A possible application of the SET process in neural networks is also discussed.

The effect of line damping, magneto-optics and parasitic light on the derivation of sunspot vector magnetic fields

The least square fitting of Stokes observations of sunspots using a Milne-Eddington-Unno model appears to lead, in many circumstances, to various inconsistencies such as anomalously large doppler widths and, hence, small magnetic fields which are significantly below those inferred solely from the Zeeman splitting in the intensity profile. It is found that the introduction of additional physics into the model such as the inclusion of damping wings and magneto-optic birefrigence significantly improves the fit to Stokes parameters. Model fits excluding the intensity profile, i.e., of both magnitude as well as spectral shape of the polarization parameters alone, suggest that parasitic light in the intensity profile may also be a source of inconsistencies. The consequences of the physical changes on the vector properties of the field derived from the Fe I lambda 6173 line for the 17 November 1975 spot as well as on the thermodynamic state are discussed. A Doppler width delta lambda (D) - 25mA is bound to be consistent with a low spot temperature and microturbulence, and a damping constant of a = 0.2.

Sources of noise in magneto-optical readout

The various sources of noise which are often encountered in magneto-optical readout systems are analyzed. Although the focus is on magneto-optics, most sources of noise are common among the various optical recording systems and one can easily adapt the results to other media and systems. A description of the magneto-optical readout system under consideration is given, and the standard methods and the relevant terminology of signal and noise measurement are described. The characteristics of thermal noise, which originates in the electronic circuitry of the readout system, are described. The most fundamental of all sources of noise, the shot noise, is considered, and a detailed account of its statistical properties is given. Shot noise, which is due to random fluctuations in photon arrival times, is an ever-present noise in optical detection. Since the performance of magneto-optical recording devices in use today is approaching the limit imposed by the shot noise, it is important that the reader have a good grasp of this particular source of noise. A model for the laser noise is described, and measurement results which yield numerical values for the strength of the laser power fluctuations are presented. Spatial variations of the disk reflectivity and random depolarization phenomena also contribute to the overall level of noise in readout; these and related issues are treated. Numerical simulation results describing some of the more frequently encountered sources of noise which accompany the recorded waveform itself, namely, jitter noise and signal-amplitude fluctuation noise are presented.

Magneto-Optic Field Coupling in Optical Fiber Bragg Gratings

The invention is a magneto-optic coupled magnetic sensor that comprises a standard optical fiber Bragg grating system. The system includes an optical fiber with at least one Bragg grating therein. The optical fiber has at least an inner core and a cladding that surrounds the inner core. The optical fiber is part of an optical system that includes an interrogation device that provides a light wave through the optical fiber and a system to determine the change in the index of refraction of the optical fiber. The cladding of the optical fiber comprises at least a portion of which is made up of ferromagnetic particles so that the ferromagnetic particles are subject to the light wave provided by the interrogation system. When a magnetic field is present, the ferromagnetic particles change the optical properties of the sensor directly.
