SPRUCE Soil Volumetric Water Content in Experimental Plots, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2017-2025

This dataset contains soil volumetric water content (VWC) measurements from the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) Experiment. Measurements were made inside SPRUCE experimental plots in the S1 Bog at the US Forest Service Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA from 2018-2025 (2018-06-14 to 2025-12-31). Observations were made with METER 10HS soil moisture sensors. To reduce bulk density related variability, 10HS sensors were placed inside mesh tubes filled with peat at a standard bulk density. The observations under standard bulk density represent relative differences in water content between hummock and hollow positions, and in response to experimental treatments. Productivity of peatlands, and their keystone species sphagnum, are highly dependent on water availability, which is affected by lateral inputs, precipitation, ground water depth and evapotranspiration. Knowledge of near surface and sphagnum water content is useful to understand peatland function. This dataset contains 8 data files in comma-separate values (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: one data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma-separate values (*.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

SPRUCE FT-ICR MS, Bulk Chemistry, and Mass Loss from Litter Decomposition Study in Experimental Plots, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2015-2017

This dataset contains molecular, bulk chemical, and mass loss measurements from a litter decomposition study at the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experimental site within the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA. This site is in a Sphagnum spp. ombrotrophic bog forest. Litterbags were deployed into the peat in September 2015 across three warming levels (+0, +4.5, and +9°C) under ambient and elevated carbon dioxide (CO₂ - +500 ppm) and retrieved after roughly 0.5, 1, and 2 years of field incubation (2015-09-23 to 2017-08-02). Litterbags containing six peatland litter types: black spruce needles (Picea mariana - SPL), spruce fine roots (SPR), Sphagnum angustifolium (ANG), Sphagnum magellanicum (MAG), Labrador tea leaves (Rhododendron groenlandicum - LTL), and Labrador tea roots (LTR). Molecular composition of water-soluble organic matter extracts was characterized using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) at 9.4 Tesla, operated in negative ion mode with electrospray ionization, providing molecular formula assignments and compound-class distributions across the decomposition time series. Bulk chemical characterization included elemental analysis (percent carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to quantify functional group composition. Litter mass loss was tracked gravimetrically at each retrieval interval, expressed as percent mass remaining relative to initial dry mass for each litter type and treatment combination. These data are valuable for understanding how vegetation shifts driven by increased atmospheric CO2 and temperature in peatlands alter litter inputs and organic matter stabilization trajectories, with implications for projecting and modeling peatland carbon cycling. This dataset contains two data files in comma-separated value (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: two data dictionaries and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

SPRUCE Bud Cold Hardiness of Trees and Shrubs in Experimental Plots, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2021-2025

This dataset contains bud cold hardiness measurements from the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experimental site (Hanson et al, 2017) within the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA. Cold hardiness was quantified as the temperature at which low temperature exotherms (LTEs) were identified (i.e., the temperature at which supercooled water within a bud freezes) measured by differential thermal analysis (DTA). Buds were sampled at semi-regular intervals from September 2021 through May 2025 (2021-09-25 to 2025-05-21) across four seasons (2021-2022 through 2024-2025) for four co-occurring boreal peatland tree and shrub species: Picea mariana (PIMA), Larix laricina (LALA), Rhododendron groenlandicum (RHGR), and Chamaedaphne calyculata (CHCA). Samples were collected across the experiment's warming gradient (ambient to +9 degrees Celsius (C)) and pooled by species within each enclosure. These data were used to assess the species- and season-specific effects of experimental warming on cold hardiness and cold damage risk in boreal peatland vegetation (Campos-Arguedas et al, accepted). This dataset contains one data file in comma-separate values (*.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: a data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma-separate values (*.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

SPRUCE Redox-Active Subsurface Organic Matter, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2023

This dataset contains measurements that report on the effects of the SPRUCE experimental treatments on redox-active organic matter (RAOM) reduction (Valenzuela and Cervantes, 2021). Measurements occurred at the SPRUCE Experiment site in the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA. This work is also a follow-up to Rush et al. (2021a) which investigated effects of temperature on RAOM reduction after two years of experimental warming (Rush et al. 2021b). This follow-up dataset addresses two main questions; (i) How does warming and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) directly affect in situ RAOM reduction, and subsequent methane (CH4) and CO2 production, across the peat depth profile? and (ii) How has long-term warming and elevated CO2 changed the total RAOM pool, and subsequent CH4 and CO2 production, across the peat depth profile? This dataset reports electron shuttling capacity (a proxy for RAOM reduction; Keller, and Takagi, 2013) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations both in one-week in situ incubations (2023-05-31 to 2023-08-01) and 42-day laboratory incubations from peat collected in 2023 (2023-05-31 to 2023-06-26). Laboratory incubations also measured acetate concentrations. The 2023 laboratory incubations were also compared with laboratory incubations conducted on peat collected in 2016 (Rush et al. 2021b). This dataset contains three data files in comma-separate (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: three data dictionaries and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

The stable isotopes of natural waters at the Marcell Experimental Forest

Here, we present a new data set from the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) that compiles water isotope measurements from multiple research catchments, some of which have been studied since the 1960s. The MEF is located in northern Minnesota, USA, and is home to heavily studied and monitored forests, streams, bogs, and fens. Peat-forming systems (bogs and fens) are an important component of the MEF landscape and have a profound impact on the water cycle in these catchments. Within the last decade, analysis of stable isotopes of water (expressed as δD and δ 18 O) has been implemented to characterize the different components of the water budget, and to allow researchers to look at catchment and peatland-specific hydrologic effects in the watershed. This δD and δ 18 O data set of natural waters from MEF catchments is primarily composed of measurements from three peatlands (S1, S2, S6) during an 11-year period. More recently collection and analysis were expanded to also include samples from the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) project in the S1 bog, peatlands S3, S4, S5, as well as nearby lakes. We establish a local meteoric water line by analyzing the isotopic composition of precipitation, which fills a void in regional meteoric water lines for Minnesota. Furthermore, we establish baseline isotopic composition for bog outlet streams, bog porewater, aquifer groundwater, overland flow, subsurface stormflow, and snowpack, as well as runoff from the SPRUCE experimental chambers. These data are publicly available and will be expanded upon in the future.

SPRUCE Methane Transport in Plants at S1 Bog, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, 2017-2019

This data set contains measurements of methane (CH4) transport by plants (both ground-layer and trees) and diffusion, as well as whole-plot emissions, taken in September 2018 and June 2019 in S1 Bog outside of the SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experimental enclosures. Additionally, CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) stable isotope data in porewater and atmospheric emissions were taken in July 2017 in the SPRUCE enclosures to explore the relative magnitude of CH4 oxidation. Episodic ebullition rates for S1 Bog are taken from Gill et al. (2017). Methane transport is an important component of many ecosystem models of peatlands. The results were compared to two methane models that have been developed for the SPRUCE project, ELM-SPRUCE (Earth Land Model) and TECO_SPRUCE (Terrestrial ECOsystem model). SPRUCE Wood Anatomy of Picea mariana and Larix laricina in SPRUCE Experimental Plots, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, July 2023

Branch samples were collected in July 2023 to measure wood anatomical traits on two dominant conifer species, Picea mariana and Larix laricina, in a bog forest at the SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experiment in northern Minnesota. Anatomical measurements were made on the annual rings of those branches with dates ranging from 2011-2023. Wood anatomical measurements include annual tracheid diameter, tracheid density, cell wall thickness, thickness-to-span-ratio, and conduit lumen fraction in both earlywood and latewood. Wood anatomical samples were prepared using a portable sliding microtome (G.S.L.-1 lightweight microtome, WSL) and a light microscope (Leica DM2500). This dataset spans 2011–2023, with full branch-level coverage for 2020–2023, whereas some thinner branches formed only in recent years and therefore do not contain rings from earlier years. By providing annual, treatment-specific anatomical measurements, this dataset can help quantify structural acclimation to global change, clarify links among phenology, wood formation, and hydraulic traits, and improve predictions of forest growth response under future climates. SPRUCE Photosynthesis and Respiration of Picea mariana and Larix laricina in SPRUCE Experimental Plots, 2016-2017

This dataset contains empirical physiological, morphological, and chemical data collected on two dominant conifer species, Picea mariana and Larix laricina, between May 2016 and August 2017 at the SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experimental site within the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA. Analyses assessed the response of conifers to whole-ecosystem warming and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Measurements include light-saturated net photosynthesis and dark respiration at ambient atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration (2016), CO2 response curves of light-saturated net photosynthesis (2017), leaf morphology (leaf mass per unit leaf area) and nitrogen content (on both mass and area basis). Leaf photosynthesis and respiration were measured with portable photosynthesis systems (LI6400XT, LI6800, LI-COR Biosciences, USA). In 2016, photosynthesis and respiration were measured at a common temperature of 25 ˚C to assess thermal acclimation, and at growth temperatures (for each of the five treatment temperatures) to assess field performance. In 2017, CO2 response curves of net photosynthesis (so-called A-Ci curves) were conducted at different leaf temperatures (15, 25, 32.5, 40 and 45 ˚C) for assessment of biochemical parameters and their temperature sensitivity. In addition, dark respiration measurements at different leaf temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 ºC) were also taken.
