Baryon-baryon, meson-meson, and meson-baryon interactions in nonrelativistic QCD

Van der Waals potentials describing interactions between color-singlet mesons and/or baryons vanish at leading order in potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (pNRQCD). This result and constraints from Gauss’s law are used to prove that weakly coupled pNRQCD van der Waals potentials in generic non-Abelian gauge theories with only heavy quarks are too weak to form bound states whose color state is a product of color singlets. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of four, five, and six quarks with equal masses provide numerical evidence that exotic color configurations are higher energy than products of color-singlet hadrons, suggesting that equal-mass fully heavy tetraquark, pentaquark, and hexaquark bound states do not exist at next-to-leading order in pNRQCD and at all orders in QCD-like theories in which all quark masses are asymptotically large. Mechanisms for generating hadron-hadron bound states are identified, which necessarily involve large quark-mass hierarchies, relativistic effects arising from the presence of sufficiently light quarks, or nonperturbative effects outside the scope of weakly coupled pNRQCD.

Review of Particle Physics

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,200 new measurements from 903 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Most of the 118 reviews are updated, including many that are heavily revised.

Extracting the distribution amplitude of light pseudoscalar mesons using the HOPE method

The pseudoscalar meson light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are essential non-perturbative inputs for a range of high-energy exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics. In this proceedings, progress towards a determination of the low Mellin moments of the pion and kaon LCDAs by the HOPE Collaboration is reported.

Ordinary and exotic mesons in the extended Linear Sigma Model

The extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) is a hadronic model based on the global symmetries of QCD and the corresponding explicit, anomalous, and spontaneous breaking patterns. In its basic three-flavor form, its mesonic part contains the dilaton/glueball as well as the nonets of pseudoscalar, scalar, vector, and axial–vector mesons, thus chiral symmetry is linearly realized. In the chiral limit and neglecting the chiral anomaly, only one term – within the dilaton potential – breaks dilatation invariance, and all terms are chirally symmetric. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is implemented by a generalization of the Mexican-hat potential, with explicit symmetry breaking responsible for its tilting. The overall mesonic phenomenology up to ~2 GeV is in agreement with the PDG compilation of masses and partial and total decay widths. The eLSM was enlarged in a straightforward way to include other conventional quark–antiquark nonets (pseudovector and orbitally excited vector mesons, tensor and axial-tensor mesons, radially excited (pseudo)scalar mesons, etc.), as well as two nonets of hybrid mesons, the lightest one with exotic quantum numbers J $\mathscr{PC}$ = 1 -+ not allowed for $\bar{q}q$ objects, such as the resonance π 1 (1600) and the recently discovered η 1 (1855) . In doing so, different types of chiral multiplets are introduced: heterochiral and homochiral multiplets, which differ in the way they transform under chiral transformations. Moreover, besides the scalar glueball that is present from the beginning as dilaton, other glueballs, the tensor, the pseudoscalar and the vector glueballs were coupled to the eLSM: the scalar resonance ƒ 0 (1710) turns out to be mostly gluonic, the tensor glueball couples strongly to vector mesons, and the pseudoscalar glueball couples sizably to $ππη'$ and can be assigned to X (2370) or X (2600). In all cases above, masses and decays can be analyzed allowing for a better understanding of both conventional and non-conventional mesons: whenever data are available, a comparison is performed and, when this is not the case, predictions of decay widths and decay ratios are outlined. The eLSM contains chiral partners on an equal footing and is therefore well suited for studies of chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature and densities: this is done by coupling it to the Polyakov loop. Finally, the QCD phase diagram and the location of the critical endpoint were investigated within this framework.

Measurement of 𝐵 meson production fraction ratios in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using open-charm and charmonium decays

Production fraction ratios of 𝐵 + , 𝐵 0 , and 𝐵$^{0}_{𝑠}$ mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using a special dataset recorded in 2018 with high-rate triggers designed to collect an unbiased sample of 1⁢010 𝑏 hadrons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. These data allow the study of the open-charm decays of 𝐵 mesons (𝐵 (𝑠) → 𝜋⁢𝐷 (𝑠) ) where the 𝐷 meson decays into fully hadronic final states. By utilizing known branching fractions and precise theoretical calculations, production fraction ratios as functions of 𝐵 meson transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) are measured using open-charm decays in the kinematic range of 8 < 𝑝 T < 60 GeV and |𝑦| <2.25. In addition, the same dataset is used to measure the relative production fraction ratios with the charmonium decay channels [𝐵 (𝑠) →𝑋⁢𝐽/𝜓 with 𝑋 indicating a 𝐾 + , 𝐾*(892) 0 , or 𝜙⁡(1020) meson] where the 𝐽/𝜓 meson decays into a pair of muons. The open-charm results are used to normalize the relative production fraction ratios obtained from the charmonium samples. Measurements of the ratios of branching fractions of 𝐵 meson decays to charmonium and open-charm final states are also reported, which will improve the world-average values of these ratios. Finally, we test isospin invariance in 𝐵 meson production in proton-proton collisions and observe that it holds within the experimental precision.

Measurement of 𝜔 meson production in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

We present the measurement of the 𝑝 T -differential production cross section of 𝜔 mesons in pp and 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity by ALICE. In addition, the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor 𝑅 𝑝⁢Pb for 𝜔 mesons at LHC energies is presented, complementing the existing measurements of lighter neutral mesons such as the 𝜋 0 and 𝜂. Within the measured 𝑝 T range, the 𝑅 𝑝⁢Pb of 𝜔 mesons is compatible with no cold nuclear matter effects within the uncertainties, consistent with previous measurements at lower energies. The 𝜔/𝜋 0 ratio is presented for both collision systems, showing no collision system dependence within the uncertainties. The comparison to previously published 𝜔/𝜋 0 ratios at lower and higher collision energies in pp collisions suggests a decreasing trend of the ratio above 𝑝T = 4 GeV/𝑐 with increasing collision energy. The data in both collision systems are compared to predictions from PYTHIA 8, EPOS LHC, and DPMJET event generators, revealing significant shortcomings in these models’ ability to describe the production of 𝜔 mesons.

Low-mass vector-meson production at forward rapidity in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured low-mass vector-meson (𝜔+𝜌 and 𝜙) production through the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (1.2 < |y| < 2.2) in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV. The low-mass vector-meson yield and nuclear-modification factor were measured as a function of the average number of participating nucleons, ⟨𝑁 part ⟩, and the transverse momentum 𝑝 𝑇 . These results were compared with those obtained via the kaon decay channel in a similar 𝑝 𝑇 range at midrapidity. The nuclear-modification factors in both rapidity regions are consistent within the uncertainties. A comparison of the 𝜔 + 𝜌 and 𝐽/𝜓 mesons reveals that the light and heavy flavors are consistently suppressed across both 𝑝 𝑇 and ⟨𝑁 part ⟩. Finally, in contrast, the 𝜙 meson displays a nuclear-modification factor consistent with unity, suggesting strangeness enhancement in the medium formed.

First measurement of D* + vector meson spin alignment in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}={5}.0{2}$ TeV

The first measurement of prompt D *+ -meson spin alignment in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to the direction orthogonal to the reaction plane is presented. The spin alignment is quantified by measuring the element ρ 00 of the diagonal spin-density matrix for prompt D *+ mesons with 4 < p T < 30 GeV/c in two rapidity intervals, |y| < 0.3 and 0.3 < |y| < 0.8, in central (0–10%) and midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}={5}.0{2}$ TeV. Evidence of spin alignment ρ 00 > 1/3 has been found for p T > 15 GeV/c and 0.3 < |y| < 0.8 with a significance of 3.1σ. The measured spin alignment of prompt D *+ mesons is compared with the one of inclusive J/ψ mesons measured at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4).

Multiplicity dependence of charm baryon and charm meson production in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 8.16$ TeV

Measurements of the production yields of charm baryons (Λ$^+_c$ ) and charm mesons (D 0 ) in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV are presented. The data were collected in 2016 with the CMS experiment and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 186 nb -1 . The Λ$^+_c$ baryon is reconstructed from the decay channel Λ$^+_c$ → K$^0_S$p , while the D 0 meson is reconstructed via D 0 → K - π + . The Λ$^+_c$ baryon and D 0 meson yields are extracted in several charged-particle multiplicity classes. No strong multiplicity dependence of the Λ$^+_c$-to-D 0 yield ratio is observed, unlike the observed strange baryon to strange meson yield ratio of $Λ/\bar{Λ}$to K$^0_S$, which shows a strong multiplicity dependence. This observation indicates different mechanisms for the multiplicity evolution of hadronization processes for charm and strange quarks and provides new constraints to the understanding of heavy flavor production and collectivity in small collision systems.

New physics particles mixing with mesons: Production in the fragmentation chain

A class of extensions to the Standard Model adds hypothetical long-lived particles (LLPs) that have mass- or kinetic-mixing with neutral mesons, such as pions or rho mesons. The mixing can contribute significantly to the production of LLPs at proton accelerator experiments, and no consistent description of these production modes exists in the literature. In this paper, we develop a framework for studying different LLPs—dark photons, vector mediators coupled to the baryon current, and axionlike particles with different coupling patterns. In particular, we implement the production mechanisms in PYTHIA 8, study how the overall flux and kinematic distributions depend on the LLP’s mass, and compare various subprocesses where the mixing contributes—proton bremsstrahlung, meson decay, and production in the fragmentation chain. We find that our new description of LLP production predicts an integrated flux that differs from current approaches by one to two orders of magnitude, and highlight the unavoidable theoretical uncertainties coming from poor knowledge of the properties of heavy mesons.

Impact of tracking resolution on 𝜙-meson spin alignment measurements

Measurements of global spin alignment of vector mesons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions can provide unique insights into spin-orbit interactions and vector meson dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma produced in those collisions. The global spin alignment is measured by the 00th coefficient of the spin density matrix, 𝜌 00 , via the polar angle (𝜃*) of the decay-kaon momentum in the parent rest frame with respect to the direction of the orbital angular momentum of the collision. Such measurements are affected by the angular and momentum resolutions of the reconstructed tracks in the experiment. Such effects are nontrivial because of kinematic complications caused by the boost to the parent rest frame, and could be important given that the global spin alignment signal is weak. In this paper, we investigate the effects of experimental tracking resolutions on measurements of the 𝜙 (1020) meson 𝜌 00 . We study these effects for two methods of 𝜌 00 measurements, the conventional method analyzing the 𝜙⁢−meson yield versus cos 2 ⁡𝜃* and the invariant mass (𝑚 inv ) method utilizing ⟨cos 2 ⁡𝜃*⟩ versus 𝑚 inv . Using typical resolution values from experiments, we find that the effect of track resolution on 𝜌 00 is small, well within typical measurement uncertainties.

𝜌-meson nucleon scattering length from CLAS threshold photoproduction measurements

Here, extending our study of the vector meson-nucleon scattering lengths, we are focusing on the 𝜌-meson case using recent CLAS threshold data for the reaction 𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜌⁢𝑝 within the meson–baryon reaction model. The total 𝜎 𝑡 ⁡(𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜌⁢𝑝) and 𝜎 𝑡⁡ (𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜔⁢𝑝) cross sections are close to the momentum of the vector meson in CM 𝑞 =0.2 GeV/c. Then the 𝜌⁢𝑝 photoproduction cross section grows rapidly. Our result for 𝜌⁢𝑁 scattering length is a factor of 4 smaller than the size of the hadron and the phenomenological determination of the 𝜔 nucleon scattering length using threshold photoproduction cross sections. The observed difference between 𝜌⁢𝑁 and 𝜔⁢𝑁 scattering lengths is of interest for further understanding within hadron structure theory.

𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet axes difference in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of 𝐷 0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum 𝑝$^{ch jet}_{T}$ ≥ 10 GeV/𝑐 and 𝐷 0 mesons with 𝑝$^{D^0}_{T}$ ≥ 5 GeV/𝑐. In this 𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of 𝐷 0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis−D 0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , between the three jet axes. The 𝐷 0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the 𝐷 0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.

Observation of double J / ψ meson production in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb − 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ − decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Production cross sections of light and charmed mesons in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation near 10.58 GeV

We report measurements of production cross sections for 𝜌 + , 𝜌 0 , 𝜔, 𝐾* + , 𝐾* 0 , 𝜙, 𝜂, 𝐾$^0_𝑆$, 𝑓 0 ⁡(980), 𝐷 + , 𝐷 0 , 𝐷$^+_𝑠$, 𝐷* + , 𝐷* 0 , and 𝐷*$^+_𝑠$ in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collisions at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV. The data were recorded by the Belle experiment, consisting of 571 fb −1 at 10.58 GeV and 74 fb −1 at 10.52 GeV. Production cross sections are extracted as a function of the fractional hadron momentum 𝑥 𝑝 . The measurements are compared to pythia Monte Carlo generator predictions with various fragmentation settings, including those that have increased fragmentation into vector mesons over pseudoscalar mesons. The cross sections measured for light hadrons are consistent with no additional increase of vector over pseudoscalar mesons. The charmed-meson cross sections are compared to earlier measurements—when available—including older Belle results, which they supersede. They are in agreement before application of an improved initial-state radiation correction procedure that causes slight changes in their 𝑥 𝑝 shapes.

Interacting mesons as degrees of freedom in a chiral model

Here, we study the equation of state of hot and dense hadronic matter using an extended chiral mean field (CMF) model framework where the addition is the inclusion of interactions of thermally excited mesons. This is implemented by calculating the in-medium masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, obtained through the explicit chiral symmetry-breaking and vector-interaction terms in the Lagrangian, respectively, prior to applying the mean-field approximation. As a result, the in-medium meson contributions generate a feedback term to the CMF’s equations of motion, which then modifies the equation of state. With this improvement, we quantify the effect on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter through comparisons with state-of-the-art lattice QCD results and other hadronic models like the hadron resonance gas model. We find that the results of the updated hadronic CMF model with an improved meson description (mCMF) provide a better agreement with lattice-QCD data for thermodynamic state variables across a wide range of temperatures and baryon chemical potentials.
