Smart material based multilayered microbeam structures for spatial self-deployment and reconfiguration: A residual stress approach

Alleviation of the potentially damaging effects induced by residual stresses was comprehensively investigated in previous research. Here, this paper, however, presents a spatially self-deployable and reconfigurable multilayered microbeam which takes advantage of residual stresses and shape memory effects. Reconfigurable mechanism of a typical four-layered microbeam composed of Pt\Ni 50 Ti 50 \Ni 50 Ti 50 \Pt is introduced, followed by analytical modeling of the maximum distance of the self-deployed gap as functions of variable structural and material parameters, including compressive residual stress in Pt layers and tensile residual stress in Ni 50 Ti 50 layers. Analytical solutions given by the static model agree well with the results obtained via finite element models (FEMs). Fabrication, characterization, and in-situ experiments were carried out to validate the feasibility of deployment of the as-released four-layered microbeam. The maximum distance of the gap was measured to be 41.39 μm at 20 °C, which could be increased to 51.73 μm thanks to controllable reconfiguration driven by shape memory effects. Theoretical analysis of such self-deployment and reconfiguration suggested a tensile residual stress increase by 52 MPa in Ni 50 Ti 50 layers. The multilayered microbeam structure with capabilities of self-deployment and reconfiguration offers great potential for various emerging applications, such as micro robotics, medical drug delivery devices, and intelligent chip scale spacecraft.

Establishment of Microbeam Radiation Therapy at a Small-Animal Irradiator

Microbeam radiation therapy is a preclinical concept in radiation oncology. It spares normal tissue more effectively than conventional radiation therapy at equal tumor control. The radiation field consists of peak regions with doses of several hundred gray, whereas doses between the peaks (valleys) are below the tissue tolerance level. Widths and distances of the beams are in the submillimeter range for microbeam radiation therapy. A similar alternative concept with beam widths and distances in the millimeter range is presented by minibeam radiation therapy. Although both methods were developed at large synchrotron facilities, compact alternative sources have been proposed recently.

Synchrotron Microbeam Diffraction Studies on the Alignment within 3D-Printed Smectic-A Liquid Crystal Elastomer Filaments during Extrusion

3D printing of novel and smart materials has received considerable attention due to its applications within biological and medical fields, mostly as they can be used to print complex architectures and particular designs. However, the internal structure during 3D printing can be problematic to resolve. We present here how time-resolved synchrotron microbeam Small-Angle X-ray Diffraction (μ-SAXD) allows us to elucidate the local orientational structure of a liquid crystal elastomer-based printed scaffold. Most reported 3D-printed liquid crystal elastomers are mainly nematic; here, we present a Smectic-A 3D-printed liquid crystal elastomer that has previously been reported to promote cell proliferation and alignment. The data obtained on the 3D-printed filaments will provide insights into the internal structure of the liquid crystal elastomer for the future fabrication of liquid crystal elastomers as responsive and anisotropic 3D cell scaffolds.

A Mouse Model for Microbeam Radiation Therapy of the Lung

Radiation therapy is an important treatment component for patients with lung cancer. However, the survival time gained with clinical radiation therapy techniques is relatively short. Data from preclinical experiments suggest that synchrotron microbeam radiation therapy could be much better suited to control malignant brain tumors than current clinical concepts of radiation therapy. Even at peak doses of several hundred gray, the extent of functional deficits is low.

Synchrotron Microbeam Radiation Therapy for the Treatment of Lung Carcinoma: A Preclinical Study

In the past 3 decades, synchrotron microbeam radiation therapy (S-MRT) has been shown to achieve both good tumor control and normal tissue sparing in a range of preclinical animal models. However, the use of S-MRT for the treatment of lung tumors has not yet been investigated. This study is the first to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of S-MRT for the treatment of lung carcinoma, using a new syngeneic and orthotopic mouse model.

In situ microbeam surface X-ray scattering reveals alternating step kinetics during crystal growth

The stacking sequence of hexagonal close-packed and related crystals typically results in steps on vicinal {0001} surfaces that have alternating A and B structures with different growth kinetics. However, because it is difficult to experimentally identify which step has the A or B structure, it has not been possible to determine which has faster adatom attachment kinetics. Here we show that in situ microbeam surface X-ray scattering can determine whether A or B steps have faster kinetics under specific growth conditions. We demonstrate this for organo-metallic vapor phase epitaxy of (0001) GaN. X-ray measurements performed during growth find that the average width of terraces above A steps increases with growth rate, indicating that attachment rate constants are higher for A steps, in contrast to most predictions. Overall, our results have direct implications for understanding the atomic-scale mechanisms of GaN growth and can be applied to a wide variety of related crystals.

Gas-mediated trace element incorporation into rhyolite-hosted topaz: A synchrotron microbeam XAS study

Magmatic gas exsolving during late-stage cooling of shallow magmas has been considered an important facilitator of low-pressure alteration and metal transport. However, the chemical properties of such gas, particularly its metal transport mechanisms and capacity, remain elusive. Trace elements in minerals produced by gas-mediated surface reaction or precipitation from gas capture details of gas composition and reaction pathways. However, interpretation of mineral trace element contents is dependent on understanding crystallographic controls on gas/mineral partitioning. Here, this work investigates the structural accommodation of As, Mn, Ga, Ge, Fe, and Ti in vapor-deposited topaz of vesicular topaz rhyolite from the Thomas Range, Utah, through single-crystal synchrotron microbeam X-ray techniques on picogram quantities of those trace elements. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) data indicates that these elements are incorporated into topaz as As 5+ , Fe 3+ , Mn 3+ , Ti 4+ , Ga 3+ , and Ge 4+ . Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis for these trace elements, compared to EXAFS of structural Al and Si, reveals that As 5+ and Ge 4+ are incorporated directly into the tetrahedral site of the topaz structure, with the octahedral site accommodating Mn 3+ , Fe 3+ , Ga 3+ , and Ti 4+ . For As 5+ and Fe 3+ , the structural impact of substitution extends to at least second neighbors (other elements were only resolvable to first neighbors). Further interpretation of the EXAFS results suggests that the substitution of Ti 4+ results in increased distortion of the octahedral site, while the other trace elements induce more uniform expansion correlating in magnitude to their ionic radius. Comparison of quantified X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data for two topaz crystals from this rhyolite reveals variable trace element concentrations for As 5+ , Fe 3+ , Ga 3+ , and Ti 4+ , reflective of a source gas undersaturated in these trace elements changing in concentration over the period of topaz deposition. The identical Ge 4+ content of the two topaz crystals suggests that Ge 4+ in the gas was buffered by the growth of another Ge 4+ -bearing phase, such as quartz. The very low Mn 3+ content in the topaz crystals does not reflect the abundance of Mn 3+ in the gas (saturation of Mn is evidenced by coexisting bixbyite). Instead, it suggests a strong Jahn-Teller inhibitory effect to the substitution of Mn 3+ for Al 3+ in the distorted octahedral site of topaz. It is proposed that exsolution of an HF-enriched gas from cooling rhyolitic magma led to local scouring of Al, Si, and trace metals from the magma. Once topaz crystals nucleated, self-catalyzed reactions that recycle HF led to continued growth of topaz.

A case study on the use of carbon sticky tabs for microbeam uranium isotope measurement with an emphasis on understanding the influence of subtle variations in substrate composition

In this paper we integrate laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), large geometry secondary ion mass spectrometry (LG-SIMS), laser ablation—multi collector—inductively coupled plasma—mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS), and trace elemental compositions obtained by bulk digestion from a suite of commercially available carbon sticky tabs to determine if subtle variations in the tab’s composition can be tied to shifts in the observed uranium isotopic composition of the IRMM-2020 standard relative to its ‘true’ value. The results suggest that, although clear differences exist in the relative abundances of carbon and hydrogen across the various carbon sticky tabs examined, as well as differences in their trace elemental and total uranium concentrations, these differences do not appear to influence the LG-SIMS or LA-MC-ICP-MS uranium isotope ratio measurements, or the appearance of the uranium mass spectrum scans. Instead, the quality (i.e., precision and accuracy) of the LG-SIMS and LA-MC-ICP-MS results are directly proportional to the observed signal intensity at the time of analysis. For the LG-SIMS measurements, there does appear to be a direct correlation between 235U1H hydride formation rates and vacuum conditions within the instrument’s analytical chamber. Furthermore, none of the carbon sticky tabs examined by LG-SIMS displayed evidence of elevated background uranium content. While a preliminary correlation was observed between the uranium isotope background signal during LA-MC-ICP-MS and the total uranium concentrations determined by isotope dilution, none of the tabs displayed a high enough analytical background to affect the isotope ratio measurements.
