Barium, gold, and silver film lubrication of minature ball bearings for vacuum system use
Although the efficient destruction of organic material was demonstrated in the supercritical water oxidation process, the reaction kinetics and mechanisms are unknown. The kinetics and mechanisms of carbon monoxide and ammonia oxidation in and reaction with supercritical water were studied experimentally. Experimental oxidation of urine and feces in a microprocessor controlled system was performed. A minaturized supercritical water oxidation process for space applications was design, including preliminary mass and energy balances, power, space and weight requirements.
A minature quadrupole mass-spectrometer array consisting of 16 rods in a 4X4 array is reported.
The present invention provides a minature quadrupole mass spectrometer array for the separation of ions, comprising a first pair of parallel, planar, nonmagnetic conducting rods each having an axis of symmetry, a second pair of planar, nonmagnetic conducting rods each having an axis of symmetry parallel to said first pair of rods and disposed such that a line perpendicular to each of said first axes of symmetry and a line perpendicular to each of said second axes of symmetry bisect each other and form a generally 90 degree angle. A nonconductive top positioning plate is positioned generally perpendicular to the first and second pairs of rods and has an aperture for ion entrance along an axis equidistant from each axis of symmetry of each of the parallel rods, a nonconductive bottom positioning plate is generally parallel to the top positioning plate and has an aperture for ion exit centered on an axis equidistant from each axis of symmetry of each of the parallel rods, means for maintaining a direct current voltage between the first and second pairs of rods, and means for applying a radio frequency voltage to the first and second pairs of rods.

Minature rovers with articulated mobility mechanisms are being developed for planetary surface exploration on Mars and small solar system bodies.
The Lunar Gateway or the Gateway, part of NASA’s Artemis program, is a space station orbiting around the moon The cis-lunar Gateway platform provides the opportunity for Heliophysics investigations to advance our knowledge of the coupled Sun-Earth system and the opportunity better understand the radiation environment in order to support and improve crew safety and operations at the Moon and beyond. The Heliophysics Environmental and Radiation Measurement Experiment Suite (HERMES) is a suite of instruments place on the outside of the Habitation and Logistics Outpost ( HALO) monitor the Sun’s radiation environment and space weather. HERMES, led byNASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, will monitor lower energy solar particles critical to scientific investigations of the Sun including the solar winds. Additional suite of instruments provided by ESA, the European Radiation Sensors Array (ERSA) will complement space weather studies. We report here on the energetic particle instrument, the Minaturized Electron Proton Telescope (MERiT) on board HERMES designed to measure electrons and protons in the energy range ~0.3-9. MeV and ~1-190 MeV in 11 and 20 differential energy channels respectively. MERiT is a solid state detector telescope with the two sensor heads:one looking sunward and the other anti-sunward. MERiT will help advance our understanding of solar energetic particles, low energy cosmic rays and energetic electrons in the magnetospheric tail. We will describe the instrument in details and the science topics it is expected to address. Lunar Gateway is currently expected to launch in 2024
Green chemistry is a set of principles for assessing, developing, and implementing methods that are safer, more efficient, and less detrimental to the environment. The analytical method greenness score (AMGS) is one of many metrics that attempt to evaluate traditional liquid chromatography (LC) based on the energy consumption of the instrument and the safety, health risks, and environmental impact of the solvents employed. Unfortunately, in practice, the AMGS is primarily focused on traditional separation methods in the pharmaceutical industry and is not amenable to cutting-edge separation science, including miniaturization. To broaden this scope, the unified Analytical Method Greenness Score (uAMGS) is presented here, which clarifies and expands on the underlying mathematics and incorporates both dimensional and uncertainty analysis, enabling its application to a broader range of analytical techniques. The uAMGS is used to compare the greenness of two distinct methods: single-molecule microscopy (SMM) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which were used to collect equivalent data. uAMGS determines that SMM is significantly greener than HPLC due primarily to decreased solvent consumption. Overall, the uAMGS should allow chemists ranging from undergraduates to industrial PhDs to assess the greenness of a wide range of separations.
The seminars invitees include representatives from industry, nonprofit research facility and universities. The presentation provides an overview of the NASAGSFC locations, technical capabilities and applied nanotechnology interests. Initially presented are advances by the broader technological communities on current miniaturized multiscale advanced manufacturing and 3D printing products on the micro and macro scale. Briefly assessed is the potential of moving toward the nanoscale for possible space flight applications and challenges. Lastly, highlighted are GSFCs current successes in nano-technology developments and targeted future applications.
