Cross-cutting strategies to lower electricity use of miscellaneous electric loads in the domestic sector

Miscellaneous Electric Loads (MELs) account for roughly one quarter of building electricity use in most developed countries. A product-specific approach to lowering MELs electricity use in this category takes too long and costs too much because there are so many MELs, each providing unique services. An alternative approach focusing on key functionalities was therefore explored. These functionalities include: (1) power management, (2) power scaling, and (3) power conversion. Cross-cutting efficiency improvements to these functionalities can be incorporated into broad categories of MELs, thus saving electricity and lowering costs. Even though the population of MELs is diverse and rapidly evolving, major technical opportunities exist to improve their efficiency in these functionalities. Research into energy-saving solutions within the cross-cutting technologies will probably have larger savings than focusing on single products.

Closure Report for Corrective Action Unit 578: Miscellaneous Inactive Sites, Nevada National Security Site, Nevada

This closure report (CR) presents information supporting the closure of Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 578: Miscellaneous Inactive Sites, Nevada National Security Site, Nevada. The purpose of this CR is to provide justification and documentation supporting the recommendation that no further corrective action is needed for CAU 578 based on the implementation of the corrective actions listed in Table ES-1.

Core Model Proposal #389: Ammonia Trade and Miscellaneous GCAM 7.0 Bugfixes

This proposal re-structures the N fertilizer sector in the model, replacing the trade structure which was implemented before GCAM had the capability to trade secondary goods between regions, and re-naming the production commodity "ammonia" in order to better set up the model for representing ammonia as an energy carrier in subsequent work. Several bugfixes for GCAM 7.0 are also included in the proposal.

Hydrated Metal and Metal-Nitrate Complexes in Water: Full Lanthanide(III) Series plus Miscellaneous Metal Ions

This is a dataset of hydrated metal complexes and metal–nitrate hydrated complexes intended for public use, reproducibility, and downstream structural analysis. A key feature is coverage across the full lanthanide(III) series (La–Lu), enabling systematic comparisons of coordination motifs and bonding trends across the entire lanthanide sequence. In addition to the lanthanides, the dataset also includes other metal ions such as UO2(VI), Fe(II), and Fe(III). The dataset provides optimized geometries for hydrated and nitrate-containing hydrated complexes, together with representative ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) trajectories saved in standard XYZ formats. The accompanying NWChem input decks enable reproduction of the reported calculations and provide a starting point for extending the simulations to related coordination environments. Computationally, DFT calculations employ the B3LYP functional with DFT-D3BJ dispersion corrections and a COSMO continuum solvent model (dielectric constant 78.4) to represent solvation beyond the explicitly treated first hydration shell. AIMD simulations are performed with the NWChem qmd module at 298 K, integrating nuclear motion with the velocity-Verlet algorithm and controlling temperature using a Nosé–Hoover thermostat. Trajectories are approximately 4.8 ps in length and are used primarily to assess short-time stability of candidate coordination motifs, including (for lanthanides) differences between 8- versus 9-water coordination and comparisons between nitrate-bound and nitrate-free hydrated complexes.

Miscellaneous losses

The boundary-layer losses associated with the flow process in the blade channel are discussed. To determine the overall design point efficiency of a turbine, other losses must also be considered; these include tip clearance loss and disk friction loss. The sum of these losses normally comprises all the losses that are considered in the design of a full admission axial flow turbine. If, however, a partial admission turbine is being considered, there are additional losses that must be included. The partial admission losses usually considered are the pumping loss in the inactive blade channels and the filling-and-emptying loss in the blade passages as they pass through the admission arc. Finally, a loss that occurs at off-design operation of any turbine is the incidence loss.

Summary of miscellaneous hazard environments for hypothetical Space Shuttle and Titan IV launch abort accidents

The various analyses described here were aimed at obtaining a more comprehensive understanding and definition of the environments in the vicinity of the Radioisotope Thermal Generator (RTG) during certain Space Transportation System (STS) and Titan IV launch abort accidents. Addressed here are a number of issues covering explosion environments and General Purpose Heat Source Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (GPHS-RTG) responses to those environments.

A collection of the collapsed results of general tank tests of miscellaneous flying-boat-hull models

Presented here are the summary charts of the collapsed results of general tank tests of about 100 flying boat hull models. These summary charts are intended to be used as an engineering tool to enable a flying boat designer to grasp more quickly the significance of various hull form parameters as they influence his particular airplane. The form in which the charts are prepared is discussed in some detail in order to make them clearer to the designer. This is a data report, and no attempt has been made to produce conclusions or correlations of the usual sort. However, some generalizations are put forward on the various methods in which summary charts may be used.
