Nonlinear dynamics, bifurcations, and multi-stability in a vibro-impact system with geometric and multi-segmented freeplay nonlinearities

Freeplay is a common type of piecewise-smooth nonlinearity in dynamical systems, and it can cause discontinuity-induced bifurcations and other behaviors that may bring about undesirable and potentially damaging responses. Prior research has focused on piecewise-smooth systems with two or three distinct regions, but less attention is devoted to systems with more regions (i.e., multi-segmented systems). In this work, numerical analysis is performed on a dynamical system with multi-segmented freeplay, in which there are four stiffness transitions and five distinct regions in the phase space. Here, the effects of the multi-segmented parameters are studied through bifurcation diagram evolution along with induced multi-stable behavior and different bifurcations. These phenomena are interrogated through various tools, such as harmonic balance, basins of attraction, phase planes, and Poincaré section analysis. Results show that among the three multi-segmented parameters, the asymmetry has the strongest effect on the response of the system.

Vibro-impact analysis and characterization of pipeline conveying fluids with multi-segmented motion-limiting constraints

Previous studies of the cantilevered pipeline conveying fluid system have included motion-limiting constraints in the form of trilinear springs. While this is desirable in experimental scenarios, it may not be representative of real-world applications. Therefore, here, this study focuses on multi-segmented motion-limiting constraints. As this type of motion-limiting constraint has not been investigated with a cantilevered pipeline system, a wide variety of outer and inner constraint stiffness and constraint gap sizes are investigated in this study to gain a comprehensive understanding of how the multi-segmented constraints affect the dynamics of the cantilevered pipeline. In this effort, bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits, Poincare maps, time histories, and power spectra are used to investigate the dynamics of the system, and the fluid flow speeds where dynamic characteristics are considered. In general, it is found that critical flow speeds like when the pipe sticks in the constraints are reduced as the constraint stiffnesses are increased. Additionally, the sticking flow speed occurred at lower flow speeds as the gap sizes of the inner and outer constraints decrease, and a larger constraint offset results in a smaller inner gap size leading to critical behaviors occurring at earlier flow speeds.

Multi-Segment Decentralized Control Strategies for Renewables-Rich Microgrids in Extreme Conditions

Microgrids provide a promising approach to accommodating various distributed energy resources (DERs), while requiring significant communication infrastructures that may be affected by extreme conditions such as natural disasters and cyber-attacks. In this paper, a fully decentralized control strategy without the need for communication is proposed for islanded microgrids with high renewables penetration. First, special multi-segment power/frequency characteristic curves are designed, so that different DERs can be automatically coordinated in a prioritized manner such as renewables first to maintain power balance while DER frequencies are regulated at their reference values. Second, piecewise linear served load versus frequency models are designed to prioritize loads according to their significance, so that only noncritical loads will be curtailed as needed while critical loads are supplied without any interruptions during power deficiency. The proposed strategy can effectively deal with various normal and extreme system conditions including 100% renewables penetration, loads and renewables variations, power deficiencies requiring load curtailments, disconnection of existing DERs, connection of new DERs as well as network sectionalization and reconfiguration. As a result, the proposed control strategy is validated in the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) model of the IIT Campus Microgrid to demonstrate its effectiveness in enhancing the resiliency of renewables-rich microgrids in extreme conditions.

A Self-Organizing Nano Grid (SONG) for Energy Access Clusters

In this paper, a bottom-up dc Self-Organizing Nano Grid (SONG) for rural electrification at ultra-low-cost through a flexible and scalable topology is presented. The proposed nano grid requires no communication and uses dc-bus signaling to convey excess energy in the system through the bus voltage, allowing independent agents to conduct energy transactions based on their needs in a decentralized manner. Moreover, this article proposes a concept that uses a novel multi-source, multi-segment droop control strategy with demand coordination, allowing for dynamic self-balancing of the system under fluctuating operating conditions. The unique use of a surplus photovoltaic (PV) power droop mode precisely estimates energy availability to minimize load chattering that helps in stabilizing the dc-bus. In addition, this architecture uses standard dc/dc converters for a low-cost, modular, Plug and Play ( PnP ) solution with highly automated operation, enabling local assembly, operation, and maintenance by non-technical personnel. The proposed SONG concept was validated in simulation and with a 700W, laboratory-scale, custom made nano grid system. The simulation and experimental test cases show the feasibility of the SONG system by demonstrating the proposed multi-source, multi-segment droop control strategy without load chattering under varying operating conditions.

Dynamics of disordered mechanical systems with large connectivity, free probability theory, and quasi-Hermitian random matrices

Disordered mechanical systems with high connectivity represent a limit opposite to the more familiar case of disordered crystals. Individual ions in a crystal are subjected essentially to nearest-neighbor interactions. In contrast, the systems studied in this paper have all their degrees of freedom coupled to each other. Thus, the problem of linearized small oscillations of such systems involves two full positive-definite and non-commuting matrices, as opposed to the sparse matrices associated with disordered crystals. Consequently, the familiar methods for determining the averaged vibrational spectra of disordered crystals, introduced many years ago by Dyson and Schmidt, are inapplicable for highly connected disordered systems. In this paper we apply random matrix theory (RMT) to calculate the averaged vibrational spectra of such systems, in the limit of infinitely large system size. At the heart of our analysis lies a calculation of the average spectrum of the product of two positive definite random matrices by means of free probability theory techniques. We also show that this problem is intimately related with quasi-hermitian random matrix theory (QHRMT), which means that the ‘hamiltonian’ matrix is hermitian with respect to a non-trivial metric. This extends ordinary hermitian matrices, for which the metric is simply the unit matrix. The analytical results we obtain for the spectrum agree well with our numerical results. The latter also exhibit oscillations at the high-frequency band edge, which fit well the Airy kernel pattern. We also compute inverse participation ratios of the corresponding amplitude eigenvectors and demonstrate that they are all extended, in contrast with conventional disordered crystals. Finally, we compute the thermodynamic properties of the system from its spectrum of vibrations. In addition to matrix model analysis, we also study the vibrational spectra of various multi-segmented disordered pendula, as concrete realizations of highly connected mechanical systems. A universal feature of the density of vibration modes, common to both pendula and the matrix model, is that it tends to a non-zero constant at vanishing frequency.

Anomalous Dispersion in Reflection and Emission of Dye Molecules Strongly Coupled to Surface Plasmon Polaritons

We have studied dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the Kretschmann geometry (prism/Ag/dye-doped polymer) in weak, intermediate, and ultra-strong exciton–plasmon coupling regimes. The dispersion curves obtained in the reflection experiment were in good agreement with the simple model predictions at small concentrations of dye (Rhodamine 590, Rh590) in the polymer (Poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA). At the same time, highly unusual multi-segment “staircase-like” dispersion curves were observed at extra-large dye concentrations, also in agreement with the simple theoretical model predicting large, small, and negative group velocities featured by different polariton branches. In a separate experiment, we measured angular dependent emission of Rh590 dye and obtained the dispersion curves consisting of two branches, one nearly resembling the SPP dispersion found in reflection and the second one almost horizontal. The results of our study pave the road to unparalleled fundamental science and future applications of weak and strong light—matter interactions.
