Public policy issues. A Southern California Gas Company project SAGE report

The use of solar energy to stretch our supplies of fossil fuels was investigated. Project SAGE (semi-automated ground environment) addresses itself to one application of this goal, solar assistance in central water heating systems for multifamily projects. Public policy issues that affect the rate of adoption of solar energy systems were investigated and policy actions were offered to accelerate the adoption of SAGE and other solar energy systems.

RS-600 programmable controller: Solar heating and cooling

Three identical microprocessor control subsystems were developed which can be used in heating, heating and cooling, and/or hot water systems for single family, multifamily, or commercial applications. The controller incorporates a low cost, highly reliable (all solid state) microprocessor which can be easily reprogrammed.

The design of solar-heating systems

Report describes organized approach to design of solar-heating systems. Such parameters as collector area, storage capacity, hardware, and constraints are determined and complete cost-and-performance analysis are made. Report provides practical example by tracing development of several systems sized for single family, multifamily, and commercial buildings in Minneapolis area.

Twelve solar-heating/cooling systems: Design and development

Two quarterly reports describe first 6 months of development on single family, multifamily, and commercial installations in Minneapolis area. Reports discuss basic requirements, and reasons for selecting specific configurations. Systems consist of liquid cooled flat plate collectors, two fluid loops, and gas-fired forced-air auxiliary heat source.

An assessment of alternative fuel cell designs for residential and commercial cogeneration

A comparative assessment of three fuel cell systems for application in different buildings and geographic locations is presented. The study was performed at the NASA Lewis Center and comprised the fuel cell design, performance in different conditions, and the economic parameters. Applications in multifamily housing, stores and hospitals were considered, with a load of 10kW-1 MW. Designs were traced through system sizing, simulation/evaluation, and reliability analysis, and a computer simulation based on a fourth-order representation of a generalized system was performed. The cells were all phosphoric acid type cells, and were found to be incompatible with gas/electric systems and more favorable economically than the gas/electric systems in hospital uses. The methodology used provided an optimized energy-use pattern and minimized back-up system turn-on.
