NASTRAN multipartitioning and one-shot substructuring

For intermediate size problems where all the data is accessible, the present method of substructuring in three separate phases (for static analysis) is unneccessarily cumbersome. The versatility of NASTRAN's DMAP and internal logic lends itself to finding a practical alternative to these procedures whereby self-contained special-purpose ALTER packages can be written to be run in one pass. Two examples are presented here under the titles of multipartitioning and one-shot substructuring. The flow of multipartitioning resembles that of the present three-phase substructuring. The basic effect is to partition the structure into substructures and operate on each substructure separately. This can be used to reduce the bandwidth of a given problem as well as to store information which will allow a change to be made in one of the substructures in a later run. This latter procedure is carried out in a second program titled one-shot substructuring.

3D Navier-Stokes Time Accurate Solutions Using Multipartitioning Parallel Computation Methodology

A parallel CFD code solving 3D time accurate Navier-Stokes equations with multipartitioning parallel Methodology is being developed in collaboration with Ohio State University within the Air Vehicle Directorate, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The advantage of the multipartitioning parallel method is that the domain decomposition will not introduce domain boundaries for the implicit operators. A ring structure data communication is employed so that the implicit time accurate method can be implemented for multi-processors with the same accuracy as for the single processor. No sub-iteration is needed at the domain boundaries. The code has been validated for some typical unsteady flows, which include Coutte Flow, flow passing a cylinder. The code now is being employed for a large scale time accurate wall jet transient flow computation. 'ne preliminary results are promising. The mesh has been refined to capture more details of the flow field. The mesh refinement computation is in progress and would be difficult to successfully implement without the parallel computation techniques used. A modified version of the code with more efficient inversion of the diagonalized block matrix is currently being tested.

Multi-partitioning for ADI-schemes on message passing architectures

A kind of discrete-operator splitting called Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) has been found to be useful in simulating fluid flow problems. In particular, it is being used to study the effects of hot exhaust jets from high performance aircraft on landing surfaces. Decomposition techniques that minimize load imbalance and message-passing frequency are described. Three strategies that are investigated for implementing the NAS Scalar Penta-diagonal Parallel Benchmark (SP) are transposition, pipelined Gaussian elimination, and multipartitioning. The multipartitioning strategy, which was used on Ethernet, was found to be the most efficient, although it was considered only a moderate success because of Ethernet's limited communication properties. The efficiency derived largely from the coarse granularity of the strategy, which reduced latencies and allowed overlap of communication and computation.
