Enhanced polarization and abnormal flexural deformation in bent freestanding perovskite oxides

Abstract Recent realizations of ultrathin freestanding perovskite oxides offer a unique platform to probe novel properties in two-dimensional oxides. Here, we observe a giant flexoelectric response in freestanding BiFeO 3 and SrTiO 3 in their bent state arising from strain gradients up to 3.5 × 10 7 m −1 , suggesting a promising approach for realizing ultra-large polarizations. Additionally, a substantial change in membrane thickness is discovered in bent freestanding BiFeO 3 , which implies an unusual bending-expansion/shrinkage effect in the ferroelectric membrane that has never been seen before in crystalline materials. Our theoretical model reveals that this unprecedented flexural deformation within the membrane is attributable to a flexoelectricity–piezoelectricity interplay. The finding unveils intriguing nanoscale electromechanical properties and provides guidance for their practical applications in flexible nanoelectromechanical systems.

Thermal hysteresis controlled reconfigurable MoS 2 nanomechanical resonators

Two-dimensional (2D) structures from layered materials have enabled a number of novel devices including resonant nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). 2D NEMS resonators are highly responsive to strain, allowing their resonance frequencies to be efficiently tuned over broad ranges, which is a feature difficult to attain in conventional micromachined resonators. In electrically configured and tuned devices, high external voltages are typically required to set and maintain different frequencies, limiting their applications. Here we experimentally demonstrate molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanomechanical resonators that can be reconfigured between different frequency bands with zero maintaining voltage in a non-volatile fashion. By leveraging the thermal hysteresis in these 2D resonators, we use heating and cooling pulses to reconfigure the device frequency, with no external voltage required to maintain each frequency. Here, we further show that the frequency spacing between the bands can be tuned by the thermal pulse strength, offering full control over the programmable operation. Such reconfigurable MoS 2 resonators may provide an alternative pathway toward small-form-factor and low-power tunable devices in future reconfigurable radio-frequency circuits with multi-band capability.

Network-Aware and Welfare-Maximizing Dynamic Pricing for Energy Sharing

The proliferation of behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DER) within the electrical distribution network presents significant supply and demand flexibilities, but also introduces operational challenges such as voltage spikes and reverse power flows. In response, this paper proposes a network-aware dynamic pricing framework tailored for energy-sharing coalitions that aggregate small, but ubiquitous, BTM DER downstream of a distribution system operator's (DSO) revenue meter that adopts a generic net energy metering (NEM) tariff. By formulating a Stackelberg game between the energy-sharing market leader and its prosumers, we show that the dynamic pricing policy induces the prosumers toward a network-safe operation and decentrally maximizes the energysharing social welfare. The dynamic pricing mechanism involves a combination of a locational ex-ante dynamic price and an ex-post allocation, both of which are functions of the energy sharing's BTM DER. The ex-post allocation is proportionate to the price differential between the DSO NEM price and the energy-sharing locational price. Simulation results using real DER data and the IEEE 13-bus test systems illustrate the dynamic nature of network-aware pricing at each bus, and its impact on voltage.

Transient Symmetry Controls Photo Dynamics near Conical Intersections

Excited-state chemistry lacks generalised symmetry rules. With many femtochemistry studies focused on individual cases, it is hard to build up the same level of chemical intuition for excited-states as exists for ground states. Here, we unravel the degrees of freedom involved in ultrafast internal conversion (IC) by mapping the vibrational coherence of the initial wavepacket, and the dependence on molecular symmetry in various cyclic tertiary amines. Molecular symmetry plays an important role in the preservation of vibrational coherence in the transit from one electronic state to another. We show here that it is sufficient for the molecule to simply have the possibility of a more symmetric structure to achieve the preservation of vibrational coherence. It can be transient and still lead to preservation. Furthermore, this finding provides an additional angle on how symmetry influences electronic transitions and an additional piece to the puzzle of establishing symmetry-based selection rules for excited-state processes.

Fine structure of current noise spectra in nanoelectromechanical resonators

Here, we study the frequency-dependent noise of a suspended carbon nanotube quantum dot nanoelectromechanical resonator induced by electron-vibration coupling. Using a rigorous Keldysh diagrammatic technique, we establish a formal framework connecting the vibrational properties to electrical measurements. We find that the noise power spectrum exhibits a narrow resonant peak at the frequency of the vibrational modes. However, this fine structure tends to disappear due to a coherent cancellation effect when the tunneling barriers are tuned to a symmetric point. Notably, measuring the electrical current noise spectra provides a sensitive alternative method for detecting the damping and dephasing of quantum vibrational modes.

Irradiation-enhanced torsional buckling capacity of carbon nanotube bundles

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to understand the torsional buckling of pristine and irradiated carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles. Irradiation-induced inter-tube defects are shown to significantly increase the critical buckling torque and critical buckling angle, while slightly increasing the torsional stiffness. In contrast, intra-tube defects are found to degrade the torsional properties. Such competing interactions cause irradiation enhancement to occur in large bundles where significant inter-tube bonding can occur. However, the irradiation enhancement effect becomes weak for very large bundles in which enhanced inter-tube interactions already exist in unirradiated bundles. In pristine CNT bundles of all sizes under torsional loading, CNTs can slip via the weakly interacting van der Waals force, whereas in the irradiated bundles, the inter-tube defects prevent slipping. The study further shows that the formation of one-dimensional carbon chain defects contributes to enhanced friction under slipping.

Nanoelectromechanical Control of Spin–Photon Interfaces in a Hybrid Quantum System on Chip

Color centers (CCs) in nanostructured diamond are promising for optically linked quantum technologies. Scaling to useful applications motivates architectures meeting the following criteria: C1 individual optical addressing of spin qubits; C2 frequency tuning of spin-dependent optical transitions; C3 coherent spin control; C4 active photon routing; C5 scalable manufacturability; and C6 low on-chip power dissipation for cryogenic operations. Here, we introduce an architecture that simultaneously achieves C1–C6. We realize piezoelectric strain control of diamond waveguide-coupled tin vacancy centers with ultralow power dissipation necessary. The DC response of our device allows emitter transition tuning by over 20 GHz, combined with low-power AC control. We show acoustic spin resonance of integrated tin vacancy spins and estimate single-phonon coupling rates over 1 kHz in the resolved sideband regime. Combined with high-speed optical routing, our work opens a path to scalable single-qubit control with optically mediated entangling gates.

Long‐Range Non‐Coulombic Coupling at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 Interface

The LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface hosts a plethora of gate‐tunable electronic phases. Gating of LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interfaces is usually assumed to occur electrostatically. However, increasing evidence suggests that non‐local interactions can influence and, in some cases, dominate the coupling between applied gate voltages and electronic properties. Here, quasi‐1D ballistic electron waveguides are sketched at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface as a probe to understand how gate tunability varies as a function of spatial separation. Gate tunability measurements reveal the scaling law to be at odds with the pure electrostatic coupling observed in traditional semiconductor systems. The non‐Coulombic gating at the interface is attributed to a long‐range nanoelectromechanical coupling between the gate and electron waveguide, possibly mediated by the ferroelastic domains in SrTiO 3 . The long‐range interactions at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface add unexpected richness and complexity to this correlated electron system.

Nanoprobe Based Information Processing: Nanoprobe‐Electronics

Abstract With computational architectures becoming data‐centric and with the rise of in‐memory computing, the role of memory will be ever more crucial. In turn, storing massive amount of data demands for ultra‐low power and non‐volatile types necessitating new memory technologies. Here, a controllable nanoelectromechanical (NEM) spin memory is proposed for compact nonvolatile memory arrays. It combines the advantages of both nanomechanical and spin‐transfer torque (STT) magnetic memory devices to overcome fundamental scalability roadblocks of non‐hybrid alternatives. The hybrid system paves the way to a new memory technology in the regime of sub‐10‐nm lateral size with a sub‐1‐MA cm −2 switching energy.
