Distributed network scheduling

Distributed Network Scheduling is the scheduling of future communications of a network by nodes in the network. This report details software for doing this onboard spacecraft in a remote network. While prior work on distributed scheduling has been applied to remote spacecraft networks, the software reported here focuses on modeling communication activities in greater detail and including quality of service constraints. Our main results are based on a Mars network of spacecraft and include identifying a maximum opportunity of improving traverse exploration rate a factor of three; a simulation showing reduction in one-way delivery times from a rover to Earth from as much as 5 to 1.5 hours; simulated response to unexpected events averaging under an hour onboard; and ground schedule generation ranging from seconds to 50 minutes for 15 to 100 communication goals.

Systematic Hybrid Network Scheduling for Multiple Traffic Classes with Host Timing and Phase Constraints

Systems and methods for systematic hybrid network scheduling for multiple traffic classes with host timing and phase constraints are provided. In certain embodiments, a method of scheduling communications in a network comprises scheduling transmission of virtual links pertaining to a first traffic class on a global schedule to coordinate transmission of the virtual links pertaining to the first traffic class across all transmitting end stations on the global schedule; and scheduling transmission of each virtual link pertaining to a second traffic class on a local schedule of the respective transmitting end station from which each respective virtual link pertaining to the second traffic class is transmitted such that transmission of each virtual link pertaining to the second traffic class is coordinated only at the respective end station from which each respective virtual link pertaining to the second traffic class is transmitted.

Space network scheduling benchmark: A proof-of-concept process for technology transfer

This paper describes a detailed proof-of-concept activity to evaluate flexible scheduling technology as implemented in the Request Oriented Scheduling Engine (ROSE) and applied to Space Network (SN) scheduling. The criteria developed for an operational evaluation of a reusable scheduling system is addressed including a methodology to prove that the proposed system performs at least as well as the current system in function and performance. The improvement of the new technology must be demonstrated and evaluated against the cost of making changes. Finally, there is a need to show significant improvement in SN operational procedures. Successful completion of a proof-of-concept would eventually lead to an operational concept and implementation transition plan, which is outside the scope of this paper. However, a high-fidelity benchmark using actual SN scheduling requests has been designed to test the ROSE scheduling tool. The benchmark evaluation methodology, scheduling data, and preliminary results are described.

Automating Deep Space Network scheduling and conflict resolution

The Deep Space Network (DSN) is a central part of NASA's infrastructure for communicating with active space missions, from earth orbit to beyond the solar system. We describe our recent work in modeling the complexities of user requirements, and then scheduling and resolving conflicts on that basis. We emphasize our innovative use of background 'intelligent' assistants' that carry out search asynchrnously while the user is focusing on various aspects of the schedule.

Power, data latency, and radio frequnecy interference issues in Mars Realy Network scheduling

At different time periods in the future, missions to Mars will overlap. Previous studies indicate that during such periods, existing deep space communication infrastructure cannot handle all Mars communication needs. A plausible solution is to take into account the end-to-end communication performances of network along with operational constraints, and optimize the resource usage by scheduling communication at highest possible data throughputs. As a result, shorter communication time is required and more missions can be accommodated. This principle is demonstrated in this paper for a Mars relay communication network; a network consisting of multiple surface units and orbiters on Mars and the Deep Space Stations.

Deep Space Network Scheduling Using Evolutionary Computational Methods

The paper presents the specific approach taken to formulate the problem in terms of gene encoding, fitness function, and genetic operations. The genome is encoded such that a subset of the scheduling constraints is automatically satisfied. Several fitness functions are formulated to emphasize different aspects of the scheduling problem. The optimal solutions of the different fitness functions demonstrate the trade-off of the scheduling problem and provide insight into a conflict resolution process.

A Network Scheduling Model for Distributed Control Simulation

Distributed engine control is a hardware technology that radically alters the architecture for aircraft engine control systems. Of its own accord, it does not change the function of control, rather it seeks to address the implementation issues for weight-constrained vehicles that can limit overall system performance and increase life-cycle cost. However, an inherent feature of this technology, digital communication networks, alters the flow of information between critical elements of the closed-loop control. Whereas control information has been available continuously in conventional centralized control architectures through virtue of analog signaling, moving forward, it will be transmitted digitally in serial fashion over the network(s) in distributed control architectures. An underlying effect is that all of the control information arrives asynchronously and may not be available every loop interval of the controller, therefore it must be scheduled. This paper proposes a methodology for modeling the nominal data flow over these networks and examines the resulting impact for an aero turbine engine system simulation.

Deep Space Network Scheduling Using Multi-Objective Optimization with Uncertainty

We have developed a novel technique to incorporate uncertainty modeling within an evolutionary algorithm approach to multi-objective scheduling, with the goal of identifying a Pareto frontier (tradeoff curve) that recognizes the likelihood of events that can impact the schedule outcome. Our approach is particularly applicable to the generation of multiobjective optimized robust schedules, where objectives are assigned a service level, for example that we require an objective value to be greater than or equal to X with Y% confidence. We have demonstrated that such an approach can, for example, minimize scheduling on less reliable resources, based solely on a resource reliability model and not on any ad hoc heuristics. We have also investigated an alternative method of optimizing for robustness, in which we add to the set of objectives a failure risk objective to minimize. We compare the advantages and disadvantages of these two approaches. Future plans for further developing this technology include its application to space-based observatory scheduling problems.

Link Scheduling in Satellite Networks via Machine Learning Over Riemannian Manifolds

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites play a crucial role in enhancing global connectivity, serving a complementary solution to existing terrestrial systems. In wireless networks, scheduling is a vital process that allocates time-frequency resources to users for interference management. However, LEO satellite networks face significant challenges in scheduling their links towards ground users due to the satellites’ mobility and overlapping coverage. This paper addresses the dynamic link scheduling problem in LEO satellite networks by considering spatio-temporal correlations introduced by the satellites’ movements. The first step in the proposed solution involves modeling the network over Riemannian manifolds, thanks to their representation as symmetric positive definite matrices. We introduce two machine learning (ML)-based link scheduling techniques that model the dynamic evolution of satellite positions and link conditions over time and space. To accurately predict satellite link states, we present a recurrent neural network (RNN) over Riemannian manifolds, which captures spatio-temporal characteristics over time. Furthermore, we introduce a separate model, the convolutional neural network (CNN) over Riemannian manifolds, which captures geometric relationships between satellites and users by extracting spatial features from the network topology across all links. Simulation results demonstrate that both RNN and CNN over Riemannian manifolds deliver comparable performance to the fractional programming-based link scheduling (FPLinQ) benchmark. Remarkably, unlike other ML-based models that require extensive training data, both models only need 30 training samples to achieve over 99% of the sum rate while maintaining similar computational complexity relative to the benchmark.

US 2023/0182605 A1 Network constraint energy management system for electric vehicle depot charging and scheduling

Network constraint energy management system for electric vehicle (EV) depot charging and scheduling. In an embodiment, a power schedule is received from an economic dispatch application for a charging depot comprising EV charging station(s) and distributed energy resource(s). The power schedule may be simulated on a distribution network model of the charging depot, according to load flow analysis, to determine whether any grid-code violations occur. In response to the detection of violation(s), a constraint may be generated for each violating node, and the economic dispatch application may be re-executed with the constraint(s) to produce a new power schedule, until no violations are detected. When not all load demand can be satisfied by the power schedule, a charging schedule may be adjusted to ensure that critical energy requirements are satisfied. The final power and charging schedules may be used to schedule and control power generation and charging in the charging depot.
