A Comparison Between Publish-and-Subscribe and Client-Server Models in Distributed Control System Networks

The BIO-Plex control system requires real-time, flexible, and reliable data delivery. There is no simple "off-the-shelf 'solution. However, several commercial packages will be evaluated using a testbed at ARC for publish- and-subscribe and client-server communication architectures. Point-to-point communication architecture is not suitable for real-time BIO-Plex control system. Client-server architecture provides more flexible data delivery. However, it does not provide direct communication among nodes on the network. Publish-and-subscribe implementation allows direct information exchange among nodes on the net, providing the best time-critical communication. In this work Network Data Delivery Service (NDDS) from Real-Time Innovations, Inc. ARTIE will be used to implement publish-and subscribe architecture. It offers update guarantees and deadlines for real-time data delivery. Bridgestone, a data acquisition and control software package from National Instruments, will be tested for client-server arrangement. A microwave incinerator located at ARC will be instrumented with a fieldbus network of control devices. BridgeVIEW will be used to implement an enterprise server. An enterprise network consisting of several nodes at ARC and a WAN connecting ARC and RISC will then be setup to evaluate proposed control system architectures. Several network configurations will be evaluated for fault tolerance, quality of service, reliability and efficiency. Data acquired from these network evaluation tests will then be used to determine preliminary design criteria for the BIO-Plex distributed control system.

Dissipative rendering and neural network control system design

Model-based control system designs are limited by the accuracy of the models of the plant, plant uncertainty, and exogenous signals. Although better models can be obtained with system identification, the models and control designs still have limitations. One approach to reduce the dependency on particular models is to design a set of compensators that will guarantee robust stability to a set of plants. Optimization over the compensator parameters can then be used to get the desired performance. Conservativeness of this approach can be reduced by integrating fundamental properties of the plant models. This is the approach of dissipative control design. Dissipative control designs are based on several variations of the Passivity Theorem, which have been proven for nonlinear/linear and continuous-time/discrete-time systems. These theorems depend not on a specific model of a plant, but on its general dissipative properties. Dissipative control design has found wide applicability in flexible space structures and robotic systems that can be configured to be dissipative. Currently, there is ongoing research to improve the performance of dissipative control designs. For aircraft systems that are not dissipative active control may be used to make them dissipative and then a dissipative control design technique can be used. It is also possible that rendering a system dissipative and dissipative control design may be combined into one step. Furthermore, the transformation of a non-dissipative system to dissipative can be done robustly. One sequential design procedure for finite dimensional linear time-invariant systems has been developed. For nonlinear plants that cannot be controlled adequately with a single linear controller, model-based techniques have additional problems. Nonlinear system identification is still a research topic. Lacking analytical models for model-based design, artificial neural network algorithms have recently received considerable attention. Using their universal approximation property, neural networks have been introduced into nonlinear control designs in several ways. Unfortunately, little work has appeared that analyzes neural network control systems and establishes margins for stability and performance. One approach for this analysis is to set up neural network control systems in the framework presented above. For example, one neural network could be used to render a system to be dissipative, a second strictly dissipative neural network controller could be used to guarantee robust stability.

Spaceport Command and Control System: Network Engineering

The Spaceport Command and Control System (SCCS) project's goal is to facilitate the checkout and launch of NASA's next generation SLS vehicle in order to enable human exploration through deep space. SCCS is made up of complex software that will control and monitor the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft. Once it is fully developed, SCCS will be a large improvement to previous software since it takes advantage of modern computers and information making it faster and more reliable than the software used previously on the Shuttle program. The software will be tailored to the specific needs of the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft. These three projects will be brought together for the launch of Exploration Mission-1.

Resilient Hierarchical Networked Control Systems: Secure Controls for Critical Locations and at Edge

Integration of information and communication technology (ICT) offers new opportunities in improving the management and operation of critical infrastructures such as power systems as it allows connection of different sensors and control components via a communication network, leading to the so-called networked control systems (NCS). However, the use of open and pervasive ICT such as the Internet or wireless communication technologies comes at a price of making NCS vulnerable to cyber intrusions/attacks which may cause physical damage. Here, this chapter presents control algorithms to ensure resilient and safe operation of NCS under unknown cyberattacks. Specifically, a variant of dynamic watermarking strategies is presented by embedding encoding/decoding components of chaotic signals into the NCS for secure control for critical locations where the measurement/control signals are transmitted to/from the control center via a communication network. In addition, resilient cooperative control algorithms are discussed to ensure safe operation at edge of the NCS which consists of a large number of distributed controllable devices. Several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the proposed control strategies.

NASDA satellite mission operation system and operations

NASDA has recently developed a new tracking and control system as a basis for future satellite mission operation. It is named type-I Space Operations and Data Systems (type-I SODS). The software of this system is separated into three parts: operation and control system, network system, and support and information system. The operation control system treats telemetry and command operations. The network system controls the communication line and ground station equipments to connect the satellite and the operation control system. The support and information system provides to other systems necessary information. JERS-1 which was launched in February of this year is the first satellite operated by type-l SODS. We explain the architecture and operation methods of this system using JERS-1 mission operations.

This paper describes an intelligent troubleshooting system for the Help Desk domain. It was developed on an IBM-compatible 80286 PC using Microsoft C and CLIPS and an AT&T 3B2 minicomputer using the UNIFY database and a combination of shell script, C programs and SQL queries. The two computers are linked by a lan. The functions of this system are to help non-technical NCC personnel handle trouble calls, to keep a log of problem calls with complete, concise information, and to keep a historical database of problems. The database helps identify hardware and software problem areas and provides a source of new rules for the troubleshooting knowledge base.

Opdefender Network Monitoring And Control System

OpDefender is a new system designed to enhance the cyber security of control system networks. It accomplishes this by inspecting each network packet using a novel, patent-pending method that extends software defined networking into the application/ICS protocol layer. OpDefender consists of two key components: 1. Smart, “ICS-aware” network switches that analyze and filter network traffic in real time. 2. A network management human machine interface (HMI) that allows an operator to monitor and control network traffic in real time. The “ICS-aware” switches can serve as a drop-in replacement for typical network switches, or they can be used in conjunction with existing network switches. OpDefender is configured and controlled in real time via a custom-built, web-based HMI designed with the operator in mind.

Maximum-impact Adversary Design for Network-based Control System: A Case Study on Grid-interactive Efficient Buildings

The Internet of Things (IoT) technology has dramatically improved the efficiency of today's building operation and management. By connecting controllable devices into a communication network, control signals can be easily passed to the devices, and operating status can be acquired from measurable ends with minimal effort. However, this all-connected configuration could also expose the network-based control system (NBCS) to malicious actions, such as cyberattacks. One of the common NBCSs is the building automation system. With the promotion of grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs), there has been increasing attention on securing the buildings from the network perspective. This research proposes a maximum-impact adversary design framework so that the adversary can provide the most adversarial impact on the controlled system while remaining stealthy. The proposed framework is numerically demonstrated on a network-based building energy and control system. The building energy system is built in a Modelica-based simulation environment and controlled by the state-of-the-art ASHRAE Guideline 36 control sequences. The control commands at the supervisory level, generated from the Guideline 36 controller, are assumed to be sent to local devices through communication networks using the BACnet protocol. Simulation results show that the proposed maximum-impact adversary on such a system can stealthily affect the building system's performance to its maximum extent. It is anticipated that results can be used by researchers and practitioners in the building automation industry to design efficient and robust cyber-attack detection algorithms, especially for stealthy attacks.

Critical values of cyber parameters in a dynamic microgrid system

An islanded microgrid can be used to serve critcal load as a resiliency source when a severe outage occurs. In an islanded mode, control of a microgrid relies on the communication system significantly. Hence, microgrids are cyberphysical systems and, therefore, the cyber system plays a crucial role in the performance of the cyber-power system. A microgrid control scheme is proposed for power dispatch and regulation based on the droop and proportional-integral (PI) feedback control. The proposed control strategy is validated for transient stability following dynamic events. To evaluate the impact of a networked control system on control performance, a cyber model is developed to represent data acquisition periods and communication delays. An analytical method is proposed to determine the critical values for the data reporting periods and communication delays. The analytical method based on a state space model of a networked control system is applicable for large-scale systems. A 2-dimensional stability region of a microgrid in the space of cyber parameters can be obtained by the proposed method, and the critical values of cyber parameters are determined based on the stability region. Simulation results validate that the design of a microgrid as a cyber-physical system needs to be guided by critical values for the data reporting period and communication delay to prevent system instability.

Adaptive Online Model Update Algorithm for Predictive Control in Networked Systems

In this article, we introduce an adaptive on-line model update algorithm designed for predictive control applications in networked systems, particularly focusing on power distribution systems. Unlike traditional methods that depend on historical data for offline model identification, our approach utilizes real-time data for continuous model updates. This method integrates seamlessly with existing online control and optimization algorithms and provides timely updates in response to real-time changes. This methodology offers significant advantages, including a reduction in the communication network bandwidth requirements by minimizing the data exchanged at each iteration and enabling the model to adapt after disturbances. Furthermore, our algorithm is tailored for non-linear convex models, enhancing its applicability to practical scenarios. The efficacy of the proposed method is validated through a numerical study, demonstrating improved control performance using a synthetic IEEE test case.

Selected Flight Test Results for Online Learning Neural Network-Based Flight Control System

The NASA F-15 Intelligent Flight Control System project team developed a series of flight control concepts designed to demonstrate neural network-based adaptive controller benefits, with the objective to develop and flight-test control systems using neural network technology to optimize aircraft performance under nominal conditions and stabilize the aircraft under failure conditions. This report presents flight-test results for an adaptive controller using stability and control derivative values from an online learning neural network. A dynamic cell structure neural network is used in conjunction with a real-time parameter identification algorithm to estimate aerodynamic stability and control derivative increments to baseline aerodynamic derivatives in flight. This open-loop flight test set was performed in preparation for a future phase in which the learning neural network and parameter identification algorithm output would provide the flight controller with aerodynamic stability and control derivative updates in near real time. Two flight maneuvers are analyzed - pitch frequency sweep and automated flight-test maneuver designed to optimally excite the parameter identification algorithm in all axes. Frequency responses generated from flight data are compared to those obtained from nonlinear simulation runs. Flight data examination shows that addition of flight-identified aerodynamic derivative increments into the simulation improved aircraft pitch handling qualities.
