Remotely controllable real-time optical processor

An optical processor is provided which facilitates selection of any of a variety of patterns or images which are to be compared with a Fourier transform of a template image, wherein the processor can be constructed at low cost. One of the two images that are to be compared is formed by generating video signals representing the image and using those signals to drive a liquid crystal array through which light passes.

Accuracies Of Optical Processors For Adaptive Optics

Paper presents analysis of accuracies and requirements concerning accuracies of optical linear-algebra processors (OLAP's) in adaptive-optics imaging systems. Much faster than digital electronic processor and eliminate some residual distortion. Question whether errors introduced by analog processing of OLAP overcome advantage of greater speed. Paper addresses issue by presenting estimate of accuracy required in general OLAP that yields smaller average residual aberration of wave front than digital electronic processor computing at given speed.

Phased array antenna beamforming using optical processor

The feasibility of optical processor based beamforming for microwave array antennas is investigated. The primary focus is on systems utilizing the 20/30 GHz communications band and a transmit configuration exclusively to serve this band. A mathematical model is developed for computation of candidate design configurations. The model is capable of determination of the necessary design parameters required for spatial aspects of the microwave 'footprint' (beam) formation. Computed example beams transmitted from geosynchronous orbit are presented to demonstrate network capabilities. The effect of the processor on the output microwave signal to noise quality at the antenna interface is also considered.

Conceptual design of an on-board optical processor with components

The specification of components for a spacecraft on-board optical processor was investigated. A space oriented application of optical data processing and the investigation of certain aspects of optical correlators were examined. The investigation confirmed that real-time optical processing has made significant advances over the past few years, but that there are still critical components which will require further development for use in an on-board optical processor. The devices evaluated were the coherent light valve, the readout optical modulator, the liquid crystal modulator, and the image forming light modulator.

An optical processor for object recognition and tracking

The design and development of a miniaturized optical processor that performs real time image correlation are described. The optical correlator utilizes the Vander Lugt matched spatial filter technique. The correlation output, a focused beam of light, is imaged onto a CMOS photodetector array. In addition to performing target recognition, the device also tracks the target. The hardware, composed of optical and electro-optical components, occupies only 590 cu cm of volume. A complete correlator system would also include an input imaging lens. This optical processing system is compact, rugged, requires only 3.5 watts of operating power, and weighs less than 3 kg. It represents a major achievement in miniaturizing optical processors. When considered as a special-purpose processing unit, it is an attractive alternative to conventional digital image recognition processing. It is conceivable that the combined technology of both optical and ditital processing could result in a very advanced robot vision system.

Electro-optical processor for optimal control

An iterative optical processor has been developed for applications in the optimal control of advanced sensor systems. The processor is designed for the realization of the Richardson algorithm on bipolar data, using as input a linear array of LEDs. The usefulness of the processor has been demonstrated by the solution of the linear quadratic regulator problem for the optimal control signals of the F100 turbofan engine. In this case study, the algebraic Riccati equation matrix was solved by the use of a modified Kleinman algorithm along with the Richardson algorithm applied to a system of linear algebraic equations. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the gradual convergence of the processor.

An optical processor for zero-crossing edge detection

An optical processor for zero-crossing edge detection is presented, which consists of two defocused imaging systems to perform the Gaussian convolutions and a VLSI, ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) to determine the zero-crossings. The zero-crossing SLM is a 32 x 32 array of pixels located on 100 microns centers. Each pixels contains a phototransistor, an auto-scaling amplifier, a zero-crossing detection circuit, and a liquid crystal modulating pad. Electrical and optical characteristics of the zero-crossing SLM are presented along with experimental results of the system.

Spatial Phase Coding for Incoherent Optical Processors

In this paper we introduce spatial phase coding of incoherent optical signals for representing signed numbers in optical processors and present an experimental demonstration of this coding technique. If a diffraction grating, such as an acousto-optic cell, modulates a stream of light, the image of the grating can be recovered from the diffracted beam. The position of the grating image, or more precisely its phase, can be used to denote the sign of the number represented by the diffracted light. The intensity of the light represents the magnitude of the number. This technique is more economical than current methods in terms of the number of information channels required to represent a number and the amount of post processing required.

Restoration of degraded images by composite gratings in a coherent optical processor.

A study has been made on restoration of degraded images utilizing spatial filtering techniques in a coherent optical processor. This study differs from other coherent approaches in that the spatial filters employed contain only composite gratings that are quite simple to produce. A general method of synthesizing the appropriate composite gratings for linearly smeared as well as multiply exposed and out-of-focus images will be presented in some detail with experimental results. The extension of the method of synthesis to other types of degradation is briefly discussed.

Stereoscopic Optical Signal Processor

Optical signal processor produces two-dimensional cross correlation of images from steroscopic video camera in real time. Cross correlation used to identify object, determines distance, or measures movement. Left and right cameras modulate beams from light source for correlation in video detector. Switch in position 1 produces information about range of object viewed by cameras. Position 2 gives information about movement. Position 3 helps to identify object.

Integrated Optical Processor

Images processed rapidly in rugged, compact device. Conceptual integrated optical image processor performs complicated analog calculations, including Fourier transforms, convolutions, correlations, and matrix multiplications. Compact and rugged on account of monolithic structure, processor faster than equivalent all-electronic devices because calculations require only time for light to travel across device; processing speed limited by electronic input and output circuits.

Improved Interferometric Photorefractive Optical Processor

Processing speed increased substantially. Improved optical interferometric image-processing scheme based on four-wave mixing via photorefractive effect in GaAs or InP. Gives rise to index-of-refraction gratings acting as phase-conjugate mirrors: interactions among four input beams generate wave-front-reversed replicas of two of these beams. Each phase-conjugate beam travels precisely back along path of corresponding input beam, regardless of angle of incidence. Any distortions introduced into input beam during forward propagation removed from phase-conjugate beam during backward propagation.

Single step detection of blurred images in a coherent optical processor.

Two important operations that can be performed by coherent optical processing systems are image detection and image restoration. These operations require complex spatial filters, and if both operations are to be performed, cascaded processing stages employing two separate spatial filters are usually needed. Spatial filters are described that will perform in a single step both operations simultaneously, thus eliminating the need for extra processing stages while providing the advantages of higher efficiency and smaller space requirements. The filters are characterized by their simplicity and are easily fabricated using conventional techniques. Experimental results are presented.

Energy normalization of TV viewed optical correlation (automated correlation plane analyzer for an optical processor)

An automatic correlation plane processor that can rapidly acquire, identify, and locate the autocorrelation outputs of a bank of multiple optical matched filters is described. The read-only memory (ROM) stored digital silhouette of each image associated with each matched filter allows TV video to be used to collect image energy to provide accurate normalization of autocorrelations. The resulting normalized autocorrelations are independent of the illumination of the matched input. Deviation from unity of a normalized correlation can be used as a confidence measure of correct image identification. Analog preprocessing circuits permit digital conversion and random access memory (RAM) storage of those video signals with the correct amplitude, pulse width, rising slope, and falling slope. TV synchronized addressing of 3 RAMs permits on-line storage of: (1) the maximum unnormalized amplitude, (2) the image x location, and (3) the image y location of the output of each of up to 99 matched filters. A fourth RAM stores all normalized correlations. A normalization approach, normalization for cross correlations, a system's description with block diagrams, and system's applications are discussed.

Frequency-multiplexed and pipelined iterative optical systolic array processors

Optical matrix processors using acoustooptic transducers are described, with emphasis on new systolic array architectures using frequency multiplexing in addition to space and time multiplexing. A Kalman filtering application is considered in a case study from which the operations required on such a system can be defined. This also serves as a new and powerful application for iterative optical processors. The importance of pipelining the data flow and the ordering of the operations performed in a specific application of such a system are also noted. Several examples of how to effectively achieve this are included. A new technique for handling bipolar data on such architectures is also described.

Accuracy requirements of optical linear algebra processors in adaptive optics imaging systems

A ground-based adaptive optics imaging telescope system attempts to improve image quality by detecting and correcting for atmospherically induced wavefront aberrations. The required control computations during each cycle will take a finite amount of time. Longer time delays result in larger values of residual wavefront error variance since the atmosphere continues to change during that time. Thus an optical processor may be well-suited for this task. This paper presents a study of the accuracy requirements in a general optical processor that will make it competitive with, or superior to, a conventional digital computer for the adaptive optics application. An optimization of the adaptive optics correction algorithm with respect to an optical processor's degree of accuracy is also briefly discussed.
