Grain optical properties

The optical properties of small grains provide the link between the infrared observations presented in Chapter 1 and the dust composition described in Chapter 3. In this session, the optical properties were discussed from the viewpoint of modeling the emission from the dust coma and the scattering in order to draw inference about the dust size distribution and composition. The optical properties are applied to the analysis of the infrared data in several ways, and these different uses should be kept in mind when judging the validity of the methods for applying optical constants to real grains.

Optical properties of benthic photosynthetic communities: fiber-optic studies of cyanobacterial mats

A fiber-optic microphobe was used to analyze the spectral light gradients in benthic cyanobacterial mats with 50-micrometer depth resolution and 10-nm spectral resolution. Microcoleus chthononplastes mats were collected from hypersaline, coastal ponds at Guerrero Negro, Baja California. Gradients of spectral radiance, L, were measured at different angles through the mats and the spherically integrated scalar irradiance, Eo, was calculated. Maximal spectral light attenuation was found at the absorption peaks for the dominant photosynthetic pigments: chlorophyll a at 430 and 670 nm, carotenoids at 450-500 nm, phycocyanin at 620 nm, and bacteriochlorophyll a at 800-900 nm. Scattered light had a marked spectral effect on the scalar irradiance which near the mat surface reached up to 190% of the incident irradiance. The spherically integrated irradiance thus differed strongly from the incident irradiance both in total intensity and in spectral composition. These basic optical properties are important for the understanding of photosynthesis and light harvesting in benthic and epiphytic communities.

Nonlinear optical properties of composite materials

The optical properties of a new class of composite nonlinear materials composed of coated grains, such as cadmium sulfide with a silver coating, are examined. These materials exhibit intrinsic optical bistability and resonantly enhanced conjugate reflectivity. The threshold for intrinsic optical bistability is low enough for practical applications in optical communications and optical computing. Some problems associated with the fabrication of these materials are addressed. Based on preliminary results, switching times are expected to be in the subpicosecond range.

Thermal-optical properties of Fluorel L-3203-6 and 1059

Fluorel L-3203-6 and 1059 and four Fluorel derivatives were irradiated monochromatically and hemispherically with electromagnetic energy in the solar- and infrared-wavelength range to determine the thermal-optical properties that are required for engineering analysis. The thermal-optical properties were measured and analyzed, and the resulting data were tabulated for convenient engineering use. The results prove that the electromagnetic-energy distribution and the measured reflectance and transmittance of materials can be used to calculate several mean values, which are the total and hemispherical thermal-optical properties. The test results also illustrate that Fluorel effectively absorbs energy in the solar- and infrared-wavelength range. In addition, the results demonstrate that fabrication alters the thermal-optical properties of Fluorel.

Some relationships between Secchi depth and inherent optical properties of natural waters

Relationships between the inherent and optical properties of the ocean (Gorden et al., 1975 and Preisendorfer, 1961) are combined with the Duntley-Preisendorfer equation to show the dependence of these properties on the depth at which a Secchi disk disappears from view. An expression relating the Secchi depth to the limiting contrast of the disk is derived in terms of the average beam attenuation coefficient, the average diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance, the albedo of the disk, and the reflectance functions at the Secchi depth and just below the surface. It is shown that combining Secchi depth observations with other optical properties yields significant information about the constituents of the medium.

Asteroid surface processes: Experimental studies of the solar wind on reflectance and optical properties of asteroids

The effect of the solar wind on the optical properties of meteorites was studied to determine whether the solar wind can alter the properties of ordinary chondrite parent bodies resulting in the spectral properties of S-type asteroids. The existing database of optical properties of asteroids was analyzed to determine the effect of solar wind in altering asteroid surface properties.
