Plasma Lens in Parametric Resonance Ionization Cooling

We present a concept of a plasma lens in a parametric resonance ionization cooling (PIC) for extra cooling of muon colliders. The PIC concept has been developed to overcome most aberrations. However, parasitic non-linear aberrations which is induced in an ionization cooling material still reduce a dynamic aperture of the PIC. The plasma lens generates an azimuthally symmetric focusing field in gas-filled RF cavities that is several orders of magnitude stronger than the conventional superconducting magnets. It allows for reduction of the beam size at the beam expansion points. This reduces the size of the aberrations and therefore greatly simplifies their compensation.

Numerical simulation of parametric resonance in point absorbers using a simplified model

Abstract Parametric resonance is a non‐linear phenomenon in which a system can oscillate at a frequency different from its exciting frequency. Some wave energy converters are prone to this phenomenon, which is usually detrimental to their performance. Here, a computationally efficient way of simulating parametric resonance in point absorbers is presented. The model is based on linear potential theory, so the wave forces are evaluated at the mean position of the body. However, the first‐order variation of the body's centres of gravity and buoyancy is taken into account. This gives essentially the same result as a more rigorous approach of keeping terms in the equation of motion up to second order in the body motions. The only difference from a linear model is the presence of non‐zero off‐diagonal elements in the mass matrix. The model is benchmarked against state‐of‐the‐art non‐linear Froude–Krylov and computational fluid dynamics models for free decay, regular wave, and focused wave group cases. It is shown that the simplified model is able to simulate parametric resonance in pitch to a reasonable accuracy even though no non‐linear wave forces are included. The simulation speed on a standard computer is up to two orders of magnitude faster than real time.

Axion kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance from inflation

Axion cold dark matter from standard misalignment typically requires a decay constant $f_a~\gtrsim~10^{11}$ GeV. Here, kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance easily allow lower values of $f_a$ when the radial Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking field takes large initial values. Here, we consider the effects of inflation on kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance. We assume that the initial PQ field value is determined by quantum fluctuations, and is set by the Hubble parameter during inflation, $H_I$, and the PQ field mass. PQ field oscillations begin before or after the completion of reheating after inflation at a temperature $T_R$. We determine the range of $f_a$ and the inflationary parameters $(H_I, T_R)$ consistent with axion dark matter for a quartic potential for the PQ field. We find that $4\times 10^8$ GeV $< f_a < 10^{11}$ GeV can consistently produce axion dark matter. A significant portion of the allowed parameter space predicts rare kaon decays, $K_L \rightarrow (\pi^0 + \rm{missing \; energy})$, and/or suppression of structure formation on small scales.

Antiferromagnetic Parametric Resonance Driven by Voltage-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy

Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) is a low-energy alternative to manipulate the ferromagnetic state, which has been recently also considered in antiferromagnets (AFMs). Here, we theoretically demonstrate that VCMA can be used to excite linear and parametric resonant modes in easy-axis AFMs with perpendicular anisotropy, thus opening the way for an efficient electrical control of the Néel vector and for the detection of high-frequency dynamics. Our work leads to two key results: (i) VCMA parametric pumping experiences the so-called “exchange enhancement” of the coupling efficiency and, thus, is 1–2 orders of magnitude more efficient than microwave magnetic fields or spin-orbit torques, and (ii) it also allows for zero-field parametric resonance, which cannot be achieved by other parametric pumping mechanisms in AFMs with an out-of-plane easy axis. Therefore, we demonstrate that VCMA parametric pumping is the most promising method for coherent excitation and manipulation of AFM order in perpendicular easy-axis AFMs.

An Efficient Time-Domain Model to Simulate Parametric Resonances in a Floating Body Free to Move in Six Degrees of Freedom: Preprint

We present a computationally efficient time-domain model capable of simulating parametric resonances in a floating body in waves. The model assumes all wave forces to be linear, but the inertia and restoring forces acting on the body are expanded to second order in body motions. The simulation speed on a standard computer is approximately 40 times faster than real time. The model is applied to a soft-moored floating axisymmetric body which absorbs energy through heave, but is otherwise free to move in six degrees of freedom. Under certain conditions, we show that the body responds parametrically with large amplitudes not only in surge and pitch, but also in sway, roll, and yaw, provided it is given some small initial displacement in one of these out-of-plane modes. The predictions are confirmed by simulations using state-of-the-art nonlinear Froude-Krylov and computational fluid dynamics models.

Photons from dark photon solitons via parametric resonance

Wave-like dark matter made of spin-1 particles (dark photons) is expected to form ground state clumps called "vector solitons", which can have different polarizations. Here, in this work, we consider the interaction of dark photons with photons, expressed as dimension-6 operators, and study the electromagnetic radiation that arises from an isolated vector soliton due to parametric resonant amplification of the ambient electromagnetic field. We characterize the directional dependence and polarization of the outgoing radiation, which depends on the operator as well as the polarization state of the underlying vector soliton. We discuss the implications of this radiation for the stability of solitons and as a possible channel for detecting mergers of vector solitons through astrophysical observations.

Femtosecond two-photon-resonant parametric four-wave mixing detection of atomic hydrogen

Here, we demonstrate an ultrafast parametric four-wave mixing method for the collisional-quenching-free detection of atomic hydrogen. Two photons of 243 nm light resonantly excite the n = 1 to n = 2 transition of atomic hydrogen, and a third probe photon scatters from the electronic coherence to generate the parametric emission of a degenerate signal photon. Laser-induced photofragmentation fluorescence from water, also excited with the same 243 nm pulses, is used as a convenient method to visualize beam overlap in space and time. The femtosecond time resolution enables the suppression of unwanted nonresonant contributions to the signal and separation from resonant mixing in water molecules because of the significantly different coherence lifetimes. A folded BOXCARS phase-matching configuration yields a spatially isolated, laser-like, signal beam, amenable to measurements in highly luminous backgrounds. Measurements in an H 2 /CH 4 /air flame demonstrate quantitative agreement with simulated H-atom concentration profiles. A coherence decay time constant of 42 ps is recorded in the atmospheric pressure flame.

On the interrelation of divergence, flutter and auto-parametric resonance.

The dependence between static instability and kinetic instability (flutter) on autoparameteric resonance is studied by taking compressibility into account in a model of a cantilever beam under the action of a follower force. It is shown that both instabilities are formally special cases of instabilities known as subharmonic and combination resonances.

Parametric resonant triad interactions in a free shear layer

We investigate the weakly nonlinear evolution of a triad of nearly-neutral modes superimposed on a mixing layer with velocity profile u bar equals Um + tanh y. The perturbation consists of a plane wave and a pair of oblique waves each inclined at approximately 60 degrees to the mean flow direction. Because the evolution occurs on a relatively fast time scale, the critical layer dynamics dominate the process and the amplitude evolution of the oblique waves is governed by an integro-differential equation. The long-time solution of this equation predicts very rapid (exponential of an exponential) amplification and we discuss the pertinence of this result to vortex pairing phenomena in mixing layers.

Efficient monolithic MgO:LiNbO3 singly resonant optical parametric oscillator

A monolithic MgO:LiNbO3 singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was operated as both a standing-wave and a ring-geometry resonator. The OPO was pumped by the second harmonic of an amplified single-mode diode-laser-pumped Nd:YAG laser. Pump depletions of greater than 60 percent were observed when pumping four times greater than the 35-W threshold. The OPO output at the resonant signal tuned with temperature from 834 to 958 nm, while the corresponding idler tuned from 1.47 to 1.2 microns. The spectral characteristics of the OPO signal output and the relative merits of a standing wave versus a ring geometry are discussed.

Highly nondegenerate all-resonant optical parametric oscillator

We show that a nondegenerate multi-frequency parametric oscillator has different properties compared with an usual three-wave parametric oscillator. We consider, as an example, a scheme of a resonant cw monolithic microwave-optical parametric oscillator based on high-Q whispering gallery modes excited in a nonlinear dielectric cavity. In this paper we recall main properties of usual three-mode OPO, discuss four-mode OPO, study conditions of generation of a frequency comb in all-resonant OPO with two-frequency optical pumping, and discuss stability of a cavity with moving mirrors.

Interaction of Oblique Instability Waves with a Nonlinear Plane Wave

This paper is concerned with the downstream evolution of a resonant triad of initially non-interacting linear Instability waves in a boundary layer with a weak adverse pressure gradient. The triad consists of a two-dimensional fundamental mode and a pair of equal-amplitude oblique modes that form a subharmonic standing wave in the spanwise direction. The growth rates are small and there is a well-defined common critical layer for these waves. As in Goldstein & Lee (1992), the wave interaction takes place entirely within this critical layer and is initially of the parametric-resonance type. This enhances the spatial growth rate of the subharmonic but does not affect that of the fundamental. However, in contrast to Goldstein & Lee (1992), the initial subharmonic amplitude is assumed to be small enough so that the fundamental can become nonlinear within its own critical layer before it is affected by the subharmonic. The subharmonic evolution is then dominated by the parametric-resonance effects and occurs on a much shorter streamwise scale than that of the fundamental. The subharmonic amplitude continues to increase during this parametric-resonance stage - even as the growth rate of the fundamental approaches zero - and the subharmonic eventually becomes large enough to influence the fundamental which causes both waves to evolve on the same shorter streamwise scale.

Coherence properties of a doubly resonant monolithic optical parametric oscillator

A doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator (DRO) pumped with the second harmonic of a narrow-linewidth Nd:YAG laser is described. The linewidth of the DRO signal was less than 13 kHz, the DRO was shown to generate a phase-locked subharmonic of the pump at degeneracy, and the signal and the idler were shown to be mutually coherent with the pump and to be phase-anticorrelated with each other away from degeneracy. The signal-idler heterodyne linewidth was 500 Hz, and pump phase modulation was shown to transfer to the DRO phase at degeneracy.

Parametric instabilities of rotor-support systems with application to industrial ventilators

Rotor support systems interaction with parametric excitation is considered for both unequal principal shaft stiffness (generators) and offset disc rotors (ventilators). Instability regions and types of instability are computed in the first case, and parametric resonances in the second case. Computed and experimental results are compared for laboratory machine models. A field case study of parametric vibrations in industrial ventilators is reported. Computed parametric resonances are confirmed in field measurements, and some industrial failures are explained. Also the dynamic influence and gyroscopic effect of supporting structures are shown and computed.
