Analytical heat transfer model for laterally perforated-finned heat sinks

An analytical model is proposed to predict the average Nusselt numbers of laterally perforated-finned heat sinks (LA-PFHSs) with high aspect ratios in forced convection laminar flows. The model is developed based on the experimental data acquired from testing air-cooled heat sinks including square cross-sectional perforations distributed equidistantly along the length of the fins. The experiments were conducted using three different perforation sizes and five different porosities at each perforation size. The accuracy of the experiments was validated by comparing the experimental pressure drops and heat transfer coefficients of the heat sink without perforation with those obtained from the widely accepted correlations in the literature. Here the developed model in this study predicts the Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds number, Prandtl number, fin and perforation geometrical parameters, porosity, and the distances between perforations. The model showed excellent predictions for the Nusselt numbers of all LA-PFHSs tested in this study to be within ±12% of the experimental data and a mean absolute error of 4.90%. This study is the first attempt in the literature to develop an analytical model based on experimental data for investigating heat transfer in LA-PFHSs.

Electro-osmo-dialysis through nanoporous layers physically conjugated to micro-perforated ion-exchange membranes: Highly selective accumulation of trace coions

This study explores theoretically and numerically the phenomenon of counter-flow accumulation of trace coions during electro-osmo-dialysis through composite membranes containing nanoporous and perforated ion-exchange layers. The combination of charged nanopores and perforations allows electroosmosis, and ion concentration polarization appears near the ion-exchange layer. Accumulation of trace coions occurs because their advective and electromigration flow velocity components have opposite signs and are locally compensating in depletion regions where electric fields are high. This local compensation of flow components can give rise to high accumulation factors (>1000 in some cases) for trace coions at some distance from the interface between the nanoporous and ion-exchange layers. Moreover, the extent of this accumulation depends on the trace-coion diffusion coefficient. The resulting selectivity between different coions might serve as a basis for environmentally friendly separation of ionic species such as synthetic peptides or rare-earth elements. For example, a periodic process might include accumulation followed by species release into smaller volumes of solution. For both rare-earth ions and peptide-like species, the accumulation selectivity between ions with small differences in mobilities depends on system parameters such as nanoporous-layer thickness, distance between the perforations, and the zeta potential of the nanopore surface. Here, the use of optimal values of these membrane parameters may enable tuning of the electro-osmo-dialysis system for separation of specific ions. Modelling reveals that despite inhomogeneous patterns of fluid and ion flows close to the nanoporous/perforated ion-exchange interface, at relatively short distances from this interface (less than half the distance between the perforations) all the flows become practically one-dimensional (1D). Similarly, the concentration profiles of trace coions also become 1D. The flow one-dimensionality at short distances from the current-polarized interface enables a simple 1D approximation that is useful for an approximate analysis of trends in this multi-parameter system.

Effect of Perforation on the Thermal and Electrical Breakdown of Self-Rolled-Up Nanomembrane Structures

Strain-induced self-rolled-up membranes (S-RuM) are structures formed spontaneously by releasing a strained layer or layer stacks from its mechanical support, with unique applications in passive photonics, electronics, and bioengineering. Depending on the thermal properties of the strained layers, these structures can experience various thermally induced deformations. These deformations can be avoided and augmented with the addition of strategically placed perforations in the membrane. This study reports on the use of perforations to modify the thermal effects on strained silicon nitride S-RuM structures. Finally, a programmable fuse with well-defined thermal threshold, ultrasmall footprint, and 2-3 V voltage rating is demonstrated, which can potentially serve as an on-chip sensing device for power electronic circuits.

Effects of turbulent flow regime on perforated plate stabilized piloted lean premixed flames

An experimental study of the effects of turbulent flow regime on the flame structure is conducted by using perforated-plate-stabilized, hydrogen-piloted, lean premixed methane/air turbulent flames. The underlying turbulent flow field was investigated using two-dimensional three-component particle imaging velocimetry (2D3C-PIV) with two perforated plates of different blockage ratios. The flow data allowed a separation of the turbulent flow regime into axial velocity stream dominated and vortex dominated flows. A plate with 62% blockage ratio was used to establish the stream-dominated flow regime and another with 86% blockage ratio was used to establish the vortex-dominated flow regime. OH laser-induced fluorescence was used to study the effects of the turbulent flow regime on the mean progress variable, flame brush thickness, flame surface density, and global consumption speed. In comparison with the stream-dominated flow, the vortex-dominated flow makes a wider and shorter flame. Also, the vortex-dominated flow has a thicker horizontal flame brush and a thinner longitudinal flame brush. Especially, the spatial variation of the horizontal flame brush thickness for the vortex-dominated flow does not follow the turbulent diffusion theory. The vortex-dominated flow shows a relatively constant flame surface density and the stream-dominated flow shows a decreasing flame surface density along the streamwise direction. The flame surface density for the vortex-dominated flow is higher than the one for the stream-dominated flow. Lastly, the vortex-dominated turbulent flow shows a much higher consumption speed in comparison with that of the stream-dominated turbulent flow with identical velocity fluctuation levels.

Development of an anti-clogging perforated plate atomizer for a zero liquid discharge humidification-dehumidification desalination system

An anti-clogging perforated plate atomizer is designed for high temperature and salinity applications in a novel solar-powered zero liquid discharge humidification-dehumidification desalination system (US Patent Application US62882953). Herein this paper presents a detailed discussion on its design, and operation. Experiments are performed on seven atomizers to study the effect of design, and operating parameters on spray cone angle, and average droplet diameter. Spray cone angle remains constant with change in air mass flux, and increases with increasing orifice diameter, and manifold diameter. It also increases initially with water mass flow rate, and manifold height, before attaining a constant value. Average droplet diameter increases with increasing water mass flow rate, and decreasing air mass flux, orifice diameter, and manifold diameter. Further, anti-clogging performance of the atomizer is tested with hypersaline water of 100,000 ppm total dissolved solid (NaCl) at elevated temperatures such as air at 175 °C and saline water at 45 °C. Results show no clogging for 2–13 h of operation. Near-complete suppression of atomizer clogging makes our new additively-manufactured perforated plate atomizer an ideal fit for high salinity, and zero liquid discharge humidification-dehumidification desalination systems. Additionally, its open-surface design allows additional surface modifications to further reduce clogging, and enhance self-cleaning characteristics.

Performance evaluation of finned tube heat exchanger using curved wavy delta winglet vortex generators with circular perforations

Vortex generation is recognized as an effective passive approach to improve the heat transfer rate in fin and tube heat exchangers (FTHEs). The current study proposed innovative designs of curved wavy delta winglet vortex generators (CWDWVGs), both without and with circular perforations, to improve the heat transfer efficiency of FTHEs. There is potential to increase heat transfer performance further through various CWDWVG designs. Here, this study explores seven unique CWDWVG configurations, from 1-wave to 7-wave. A 3-D computational numerical model is utilized to evaluate the Thermo-hydraulic performance of FTHEs fitted with these different CWDWVG configurations across Reynolds numbers from 400 to 2000. This comparative analysis of the Thermo-hydraulic performance of FTHEs featuring four parallel circular tube layouts assesses configurations both with and without vortex generators (VGs) and various hole configurations. The evaluation of Thermo-hydraulic performance involves different parameters, including the London area goodness factor (LAGF), Colburn factor (j), friction factor (f), pressure drop (?P), and Nusselt number (Nu). Results demonstrate that the various CWDWVG configurations and the number of holes in them substantially affect the efficiency, as evaluated by the dimensionless Performance Evaluation Criteria (PEC). Notably, the 7-wave CWDWVGs surpassed other configurations, and integrating circular punched perforations further improved the thermal-hydraulic performance of FTHE. Specifically, the 7-wave CWDWVGs without holes demonstrated superior performance over other configurations, showing a significant increase in Nusselt number by 75.18% and 85.16% at Reynolds numbers of 2000 and 400, respectively, alongside an increase in pressure drop by 216.38% to 224.96%. Meanwhile, the 7-wave CWDWVGs with eight holes, in comparison to those without holes, exhibited a Nusselt number increase of 0.85%, a pressure drop decrease of 7.31%, and a reduction in the friction factor by 5.82%.

Hydraulic performance and wave transmission through nature-inspired perforated hollow-base piles breakwater

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are critical to achieving long-term sustainable coastlines in deltaic coastlines, particularly susceptible to severe impacts under climate change. In recent years, coastal erosion has accelerated in the Vietnam Mekong Delta (VMD), particularly in the West Sea (from Ca Mau to Kien Giang). Due to the characteristics of muddy coastlines and eroded mangrove forests in this region, only a few engineering solutions have effectively reduced waves and promoted sediment accumulation to facilitate beach accretion. However, these solutions require significant investment and cannot be relocated or reused. Therefore, this study introduces a coastal mangrove-inspired perforated hollow-base piles breakwater (PHBPB), which uses the principle of biomimicry by studying the ability of mangrove groups to protect the coastline, stimulate sediment deposition, and over time, restore mangrove forests in the VMD. The hydraulic parameters of PHBPB were tested in 260 scenarios using a physical model, which included varying parameters such as crest width (B), pile row numbers (n c ), crest freeboard (R c ), and wave parameters (H s , T p ) in determining the capabilities of wave transmission, reflection, and wave dissipation. The results showed that the process of wave energy dissipation through perforated hollow-base breakwaters without piles (PHBBWP) is governed by three main parameters, including the relative water depth of the crest (R c /H m0,i ), the relative width of the crest (B/H m0,i ), and the wave slope at the structure location (s m = H m0,i /L m ). In contrast, for PHBPB, the primary influencing factors are the relative submergence depth or the length of the submerged pile portion (R c /H m0,i ) and the relative width of the pile system (X b /L m ). Finally, the hollow structure is suitable for the soft, weak mud geology in this region with poor load-bearing capacity, allows for rapid installation, is reasonably cost-effective, and can be relocated and reused once regeneration has been completed in each stretch of coastline.

Near-Surface Layer Perforations as Precursors to Fracture in Accumulative Roll Bonding of a Multilayered Metal Composite

We use micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) to characterize the sizes, shapes, and locations of layer perforation (LP) defects in laminates of copper (Cu) and tantalum (Ta) processed by accumulative roll bonding (ARB). One—termed Cu/Ta—was processed from an initial stacking of seven alternating Cu and Ta sheets, with the exterior sheets being Cu. In the other—termed Ta/Cu—the exterior sheets are Ta. Cu/Ta remained intact during processing and exhibits an approximately uniform spatial distribution of LPs. By contrast, Ta/Cu fractured by longitudinal splitting. LPs in this latter sample are concentrated near the sample surfaces. Moreover, their density increases with decreasing distance to the fracture surface. Furthermore, these findings show that materials undergoing ARB may remain intact, despite profuse formation of LPs, provided that the LPs are uniformly distributed. However, a non-uniform distribution of LPs is correlated with longitudinal splitting.

Responsive blends of block copolymers stabilize the hexagonally perforated lamellae morphology

Blends of block copolymers can form phases and exhibit features distinct from the constituent materials. Herein we study thin film blends of cylinder-forming and lamellar-forming block copolymers across a range of substrate surface energies. Blend materials are responsive to interfacial energy, allowing selection of pure or coexisting phases based on surface chemistry. Blending stabilizes certain motifs that are typically metastable, and can be used to generate pure hexagonally perforated lamellar thin films across a range of film thicknesses and surface energies. This tolerant behavior is ascribed to the ability of blend materials to redistribute chains to stabilize otherwise high-energy defect structures. The blend responsiveness allows the morphology to be spatially defined through multi-tone chemical surface patterns.

Laparoscopic Cytoreductive Surgery with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (L-CRS/HIPEC) for Perforated Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm (LAMN II)

Introduction: Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is an established treatment for pseudomyxoma peritonei resulting from a perforated low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN II). In patients with localized disease, a laparoscopic procedure (L-CRS/HIPEC) can be undertaken. Methods: This video demonstrates L-CRS/HIPEC in a 66-year-old male who had previously undergone an appendicectomy for an LAMN II lesion. The preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan suggested disease localized to the right iliac fossa. However, laparoscopic assessment unexpectedly revealed disease in the pelvis and on the right hemidiaphragm and liver surface. Results: A technique for treating the thin film of mucin in the pelvis and on the right hemidiaphragm is demonstrated. The liver is mobilized to facilitate ablation of mucin on the serosal surface of the right lobe. Tips and tricks for starting the omentectomy, dealing with the vascular pedicle, and completing the dissection in the left upper quadrant are shown. The Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI) score was 5 (3 for the right upper quadrant, 1 for the pelvis, 1 for the small bowel), and the cytoreduction score was CC-1. The operative duration was 8.5 h, and length of hospital stay was 5 days. The patient returned to work after 6 weeks. Discussion: L-CRS/HIPEC can be performed when patients are unexpectedly found to have disease, provided the appendiceal pathology is low grade and the PCI score is low. There are potential benefits to this approach, with a shorter length of hospital stay and faster functional recovery when compared with traditional open surgery.

Peridynamic Model for Microballistic Perforation of Multilayer Graphene

The peridynamic theory of solid mechanics is applied to the continuum modeling of the impact of small, high-velocity silica spheres on multilayer graphene targets. The model treats the laminate as a brittle elastic membrane. The material model includes separate failure criteria for the initial rupture of the membrane and for propagating cracks. Material variability is incorporated by assigning random variations in elastic properties within Voronoi cells. Here, the computational model is shown to reproduce the primary aspects of the response observed in experiments, including the growth of a family of radial cracks from the point of impact.

Double-Lattice Magnetoplasmonic Structures Based on BIG and Perforated Gold Films

A method of manufacturing double-lattice magnetoplasmonic crystals with the structure (Au/BIG){sup 2}, in which the plasmon gold lattices are displaced relative to each other by half a period, has been presented. Gold films with thicknesses of about 40 nm have been formed by the ion-beam sputtering–deposition method, while the adhesive properties of the films allow the dimensional etching by a sharp-focused ion beam. It has been shown that the formation of the second plasmon lattice located on top of the 100 nm thick garnet layer allows the preserving of the periodicity of the first Au lattice. However, there is a significant influence of diffusion spreading on the lower lattice material, which leads to a decrease in its density. The dependence of the intensity magnetooptical effect in the geometry on the transmission as a function of the thickness of the upper lattice and presence of an additional layer of Ta{sub 2}O{sub 5} has been studied.
