Terahertz Chiral Metamaterials Enabling Broadband Polarization Conversion Using Polarization Guiding Effect

Polarization control plays a vital role in terahertz (THz) photonics, enabling a wide range of applications from imaging and spectroscopy to sensing and wireless communication. However, conventional polarization control methods at THz frequencies are limited by narrow operational bandwidths and excessive absorption losses. In this work, we present a broadband THz polarization control based on the polarization guiding effect. We design and fabricate a THz polarization rotator capable of rotating incident linear polarization by 90°. The device consists of 24 twistingly stacked silicon–air metagrating layers that introduce a large degree of form birefringence, with each metagrating layer being 280 µm thick and sequentially twisted by 3.75°. Numerical simulations using the Berreman 4 × 4 method predict broadband operation of the device. Experimental validation using THz time-domain spectroscopy confirms efficient and broadband 90° polarization rotation from 0.2 to 1.25 THz. Based on this concept, we further propose THz Q-plates for the generation of broadband structured vector beams with radial and azimuthal polarization states. This work offers a scalable, material-agnostic platform for advanced THz polarization manipulation and vector beam engineering, opening new pathways for next-generation THz photonic devices.

Broadband electro-optic polarization conversion with atomically thin black phosphorus

Metasurfaces tune polarization In photonic systems, the polarization state of light is typically manipulated with bulky components based on dielectrics and liquid crystals. Active metasurfaces now provide the possibility of shrinking the size of these components to the nanoscale. Biswas et al . demonstrate an active nanophotonic structure capable of versatile electro-optic polarization conversion. Using trilayer black phosphorus sandwiched between electrical gates forming a cavity, they show that the polarization state of light across telecommunication wavelengths can be electrically switched. Such control can be useful for a number of applications in communications, imaging, and beam steering where the wavefront of the propagating light can be actively manipulated. —ISO

Reflective metasurfaces for broadband terahertz linear-to-circular polarization conversion and circular dichroism spectroscopy

Metasurface polarization convertors permit conversion of an input linear polarization to right- or left-handed circular polarization based on the orientation of the input linear polarization, over a broad bandwidth and with high efficiency. The reflected circular polarizations can be used to evaluate samples for circular dichroism. A THz time-domain detection provides a time domain terahertz signal that is Fourier transformed to produce a THz circular dichroism spectrum.

Polarization-dependent conversion efficiency of carbon nanotube-Si heterojunction solar cells based on aligned carbon nanotube films

We have fabricated solar cells that implement heterojunctions of Si and aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) films. Polarization-dependent optical absorption of highly aligned CNTs led to polarization-dependent conversion efficiencies, which in turn provided insight into the role of the CNT layer in the power generation mechanism in these heterojunction solar cells. When the incident light polarization was parallel to the CNT alignment direction so that the light absorption in the CNT layer was maximized, the short circuit photocurrent decreased by ~25%. This indicates that electron–hole pair generation in the CNT layer does not directly lead to power generation and that the CNT-Si heterojunctions in our devices are Schottky junctions rather than p–n junctions.

Plasmonic Antenna Coupling for QWIPs

In a proposed scheme for coupling light into a quantum-well infrared photodetector (QWIP), an antenna or an array of antennas made of a suitable metal would be fabricated on the face of what would otherwise be a standard QWIP. This or any such coupling scheme is required to effect polarization conversion: Light incident perpendicularly to the face is necessarily polarized in the plane of the face, whereas, as a matter of fundamental electrodynamics and related quantum selection rules, light must have a non-zero component of perpendicular polarization in order to be absorbed in the photodetection process. In a prior coupling scheme, gratings in the form of surface corrugations diffract normally gles, thereby imparting some perpendicular polarization. Unfortunately, the corrugation- fabrication process increases the overall nonuniformity of a large QWIP array. The proposed scheme is an alternative to the use of surface corrugations.

A dual polarized antenna system using a meanderline polarizer

Certain applications of synthetic aperture radars require transmitting on one linear polarization and receiving on two orthogonal linear polarizations for adequate characterization of the surface. To meet the current need at minimum cost, it was desirable to use two identical horizontally polarized shaped beam antennas and to change the polarization of one of them by a polarization conversion plate. The plate was realized as a four-layer meanderline polarizer designed to convert horizontal polarization to vertical.

Octave-spanning terahertz quarter-wave plates based on over-coupled Fabry–Pérot resonances in reflective metal–dielectric–metal metasurfaces

Compact devices for broadband polarization control in the terahertz (THz) regime remain challenging to realize due to the intrinsic phase dispersion associated with birefringent materials and resonant structures. Here, we demonstrate achromatic THz quarter-wave plates with near-unity efficiency and operating under a wide range of incidence angles, based on over-coupled metal–dielectric–metal reflective metasurfaces. The devices operate as single-port anisotropic Fabry–Pérot cavities, in which the phase dispersion of the over-coupled resonances is engineered to maintain an approximately constant relative phase delay between orthogonal field components over a broad frequency range. Four complementary metasurface designs operating at an incidence angle of 45° collectively cover the 0.25–3 THz frequency range accessible to a typical THz time-domain spectroscopy system. Each device exhibits an approximately octave-wide operational bandwidth, with axial ratios below 3 dB and polarization-conversion efficiencies exceeding 80% across most of the operating band. Systematic structural optimization suppresses coupling to diffraction and guided-wave modes, thereby further extending the usable bandwidth while preserving the required phase relationship between orthogonal polarizations. The demonstrated metasurfaces are compatible with wafer-scale fabrication processes, and experimental results show excellent agreement with simulations. These findings establish over-coupled reflective metasurfaces as a robust, scalable, and versatile platform for broadband THz polarization control.

A theoretical and empirical study of the response of the high latitude thermosphere to the sense of the 'Y' component of the interplanetary magnetic field

Patterns of magnetospheric energetic plasma precipitation as a function of the Y component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) are studied. The development of a three-dimensional, time-dependent global thermospheric model using a polar conversion electric field with a dependence on the Y component of the IMF to evaluate thermospheric wind circulation is examined. Thermospheric wind data from the ISEE-3 satellite, Dynamics Explorer-2 satellite, and a ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometer in Kiruna, Sweden, collected on December 1, 2, 6, 25, 1981 and February 12, 13, 1982 are described. The observed data and simulations of polar thermospheric winds are compared. In the Northern Hemisphere a strong antisunward ion flow on the dawn side of the geomagnetic polar cap is observed when the BY is positive, and the flow is detected on the dusk side when the BY is negative. It is concluded that the strength and direction of the IMF directly control the transfer of solar wind momentum and energy to the high latitude thermosphere.

Effect of interfacial structures on phonon transport across atomically precise Si/Al heterojunctions

Phonons are important carriers of energy and information in many cryogenic devices used for quantum information science and in fundamental physics experiments such as dark matter detectors. In these systems phonon behavior can be dominated by interfaces, hence there is increasing demand for a more detailed understanding of interfacial phonon transport in relevant material systems. Previous studies have focused on understanding thermal transport over the entire phonon spectrum at and above room temperature. At ultra-low temperatures, however, knowledge is missing regarding athermal phonon behavior due to the challenge in modeling the extreme conditions in micro-scale, heterogeneous cryogenic systems, as well as extracting single-phonon information from a large ensemble. In this work, we delineate interfacial phonon transport using a combination of classical molecular dynamics (MD) and phonon wave packet simulations, to illustrate the consistency and differences between the ensemble- and single-phonon dynamics. We consider three single-crystal Si surface reconstructions --- (1×1), (v3×v3) and (7×7) --- and model both experimentally observed Si(1×1)/Al interfaces and hypothesized Si(v3×v3)/Al and Si(7×7)/Al interfaces. The overall interfacial thermal conductance calculated from non-equilibrium MD shows that for the Si(1×1)/Al system, the presence of Al twin grain boundaries can hinder phonon transport and reduce thermal conductance by 2--12% relative to single-crystal Al; whereas the Si (v3×v3) and (7×7) reconstructions can enhance it by 6--19%. Normal mode decomposition reveals that both the increase and decrease in conductance are related to inelastic phonon scattering. Single-phonon wave packet simulations show results consistent with NEMD, while further suggesting that phonon polarization conversion is significant even when elastic transmission dominates, and that the interfacial structures have anisotropic impacts on atomic vibrations along different lattice directions. Our findings suggest alternative perspectives in achieving selective phonon transport through controlling interfacial structures of materials with atomically-precise fabrication techniques, and that the phonon wave packet formalism is a potentially powerful method for developing a detailed understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena in the low-temperature limit.

Liquid metal-based polarized positron generation benchmark using the GEANT4 toolkit

In this work, we report simulation results for the positron yield and polarization of polarized electron beams incident on GaInSn and PbBi liquid metal targets. One of the proposed upgrades to 12 GeV CEBAF is the use of a continuous wave polarized positron beam for physics experiments. High-Z liquid metal jets are excellent candidates for positron production targets because they can withstand high power beams. Polarized positron beams can be generated from a primary electron beam incident to thick high-Z targets through circular polarized bremsstrahlung conversion to linearly polarized pair production. This polarization transfer from the primary electron beam has been previously demonstrated at Jefferson Lab in the PEPPo experiment with a tungsten target at relatively low energies. Here we report Geant4 simulations for 10 and 120 MeV electron beams incident on GaInSn and PbBi liquid metal targets. These simulations are compared to simulations with a solid tungsten target, as well as with unpolarized simulations using MCNP6.
