Chain-End Controlled Depolymerization Selectivity in α,α-Disubstituted Propionate PHAs with Dual Closed-Loop Recycling and Record-High Melting Temperature

In this article, within the large poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) family, C3 propionates are much less studied than C4 butyrates, with the exception of α,α-disubstituted propionate PHAs, particularly poly(3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropionate), P3H(Me) 2 P, due to its high melting temperature (T m ~ 230 °C) and crystallinity (~76%). However, inefficient synthetic routes to its monomer 2,2-dimethylpropiolactone [(Me) 2 PL] and extreme brittleness of P3H(Me) 2 P largely hinder its broad applications. Here, we introduce simple, efficient step-growth polycondensation (SGP) of a hydroxyacid or methyl ester to afford P3H(Me) 2 P with low to medium molar mass, which is then utilized to produce lactones through base-catalyzed depolymerization. The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the 4-membered lactone leads to high-molar-mass P3H(Me) 2 P, which can be depolymerized by hydrolysis to the hydroxyacid in 99% yield or methanolysis to the hydroxyester in 91% yield, achieving closed-loop recycling via both SGP and ROP routes. Intriguingly, the chain end of the SGP-P3H(Me) 2 P determines the depolymerization selectivity toward 4- or 12-membered lactone formation, while both can be repolymerized back to P3H(Me) 2 P. Through the formation of copolymers P3H(Me/R) 2 P (R = Et, n Pr), PHAs with high tensile strength and ductility, coupled with high barriers to water vapor and oxygen, have been created. Notably, the PHA structure–property study led to P3H( n Pr) 2 P with a record-high T m of 266 °C within the PHA family.

Alkylidene functionalization produces highly recyclable and scalable polyhydroxyalkanoates

Recyclable polymers that can be produced at scale and readily tuned within the same polymer framework for specific properties are important to achieving a circular materials economy. To this end, synthetic poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHAs) have emerged as high-performance, chemically recyclable variants of biological PHAs, but their difficult monomer syntheses and suboptimal recycling efficiencies pose challenges for large-scale deployment. In this study, we investigated a β-isopropylidene PHA, i-PHA, for which the lactone monomer can be synthesized by existing industrial methods from biomass-derived isobutyric acid. The alkylidene substituent prevents decarboxylative degradation typically observed during PHA depolymerization, enabling near-quantitative chemical recycling to monomer. Controlled hydrogenation of the β-isopropylidene side group produces PHAs with diverse performance metrics that are competitive with a range of commodity polymers, spanning strong fibers to ductile thermoplastics to superglue epoxy resins.

A Chemocatalytic Route to Stereoregular Poly(3-hydroxyhexanoate) and Its Statistical and Tri-Block Copolymers

Poly(3-hydroxyhexanoate) (P3HHx)-based poly(3- hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHAs) are biologically produced, commercially implemented PHAs, but little is known in the open literature about the structure and property characterizations of discrete, authentic homopolymer P3HHx, and its copolymers with poly(3- hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB). Here, we introduce a chemocatalytic route to stereoregular (both isotactic and syndiotactic) P3HHx and PHA copolymers with P3HB, including statistical copolymer P3HBHx with various levels of 3HHx incorporation and discrete hard−soft−hard triblock copolymer P3HB-b-P3HHx-b-P3HB, and present extensive characterizations of their structures, thermal properties, and mechanical performance. The synthesis is efficiently achieved by one-pot polymerization of eight-membered di(n-propyl) and dimethyl (for copolymerization) diolides catalyzed by chiral molecular catalysts. Notably, P3HBHx can be rapidly produced in quantitative yield and exhibits high molar mass (M n up to 551 kg/mol) as well as both high modulus (up to 1.39 GPa) and ductility (up to 445%), while P3HB-b-P3HHx-b-P3HB further extends application temperature windows by possessing a unique combination of low T g (−18 °C) and high T m (154 °C) values. These findings highlight the stereomicrostructural and architectural versatility of chemocatalytic routes to PHAs, which, in turn, can be utilized to largely tune the PHA thermal properties and mechanical performance.
