Crosslinked polyphosphazene blends for gas separation membranes

The disclosed invention relates to a composition comprising a crosslinked blend of polyphosphazene polymers. The composition comprises a first polyphosphazene and a second polyphosphazene, where the first polyphosphazene and the second polyphosphazene being bound by a thiol bearing crosslinking agent. Such compositions are useful as a membrane material for the separation of gasses in a gaseous mixture.

Amphiphilic Polyphosphazene for Fluorocarbon Emulsion Stabilization

High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) have been of great interest for fabricating fluorinated porous polymers having controlled pore structures and excellent physicochemical properties. However, it remains a challenge to prepare stable fluorocarbon HIPEs, due to the lack of suitable surfactants. By randomly grating hydrophilic and fluorophilic side chains to polyphosphazene (PPZ), a comb-like amphiphilic PPZ surfactant with biodegradability is designed and synthesized for stabilizing water/fluorocarbon oil-based emulsions. The hydrophilic–lipophilic balance of PPZs can be controlled by tuning the grating ratio of the two side chains, leading to the preparation of stable water-in-oil HIPEs and oil-in-water emulsions, and the production of fluorinated porous polymers and particles by polymerizing the oil phase. Finally, these fluorinated porous polymers show excellent thermal stability and, due to the hydrophobicity and porous structure, applications in the field of oil/water separation can be achieved.

Molecular dynamics study of carbon dioxide and nitrogen selectivity through poly[bis((methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)phosphazene] (MEEP) membrane

Here, a molecular dynamics simulation model was developed to comprehensively understand carbon dioxide over nitrogen (CO 2 /N 2 ) selectivity through polyphosphazene-based membrane comprising of poly[bis((methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)phosphazene] (MEEP) selective layer at the molecular level. The effects of temperature, pressure, and initial feed gas composition on the CO 2 transport on a polymer membrane were studied. The computed free energy and density profile of the permeating gas mixture exhibited that CO 2 molecules express higher interactions with the membrane than N 2 molecules, resulting in higher CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. Statistical analysis of gas molecules (CO 2 , water (H 2 O), and N 2 ) transportation suggested that hydro- and CO 2 -philic functional groups in the membrane significantly impact CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. This study suggested that Lewis acid–base and hydrogen bonding combinations contribute to CO 2 permeation and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. An equal CO 2 /N 2 selectivity was observed with and without water vapor in the feed gas suggesting that water does not hinder CO 2 transport through the membrane.

Creation of Polymer Datasets with Targeted Backbones for Screening of High-Performance Membranes for Gas Separation

A simple approach was developed to computationally construct a polymer dataset by combining simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) strings of a targeted polymer backbone and a variety of molecular fragments. This method was used to create 14 polymer datasets by combining seven polymer backbones and molecules from two large molecular datasets (MOSES and QM9). Polymer backbones that were studied include four polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based backbones, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(allyl glycidyl ether) (PAGE), and polyphosphazene (PPZ). The generated polymer datasets can be used for various cheminformatics tasks, including high-throughput screening for gas permeability and selectivity. This study utilized machine learning (ML) models to screen the polymers for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 gas separation using membranes. Several polymers of interest were identified. Here the results highlight that employing an ML model fitted to polymer selectivities leads to higher accuracy in predicting polymer selectivity compared to using the ratio of predicted permeabilities.

Hybrid polymer network cathode-enabled soluble-polysulfide-free lithium–sulfur batteries

Among the emerging 'beyond lithium-ion' technologies for maximized sustainability, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) is a favoured chemistry because of its exceptional energy density from the conversion of sulfur, an element in abundant supply. However, the dissolution of several intermediate polysulfides formed during conversion leads to rapid performance degradation over cycling. Here, in this study, we address this issue by sulfurizing a hybrid polymer network with polyphosphazene and carbon as a cathode for Li-S batteries. With rich sites to re-bond and adsorb dissociative sulfur species, this hybrid polymer network circumvents the formation of soluble polysulfides and enables a unique, reversible inserting conversion reaction. Thus, our cathode delivers both high capacity (~900 mAh g -1 cathode ) and excellent cycling stability in Li-S coin cells, with a pouch cell demonstration of projected energy density of ~300 Wh kg -1 and 84.9% capacity retention after 150 cycles. The strategy can be extended to other cost-effective, recyclable polymers, advancing sulfur-based batteries towards practical energy storage application.
