Pumping Wavelength Related Population Inversion in Nd:doped Laser

Pumping wavelength related population inversion in Nd:doped laser has been investigated, where the laser is regarded as two thermodynamic equilibrium systems, upper state one and lower state one. The population inversion limits at various pumping wavelengths and temperatures are compared. The effective metastable life time has been derived, where both pump and laser fields within Nd:doped laser medium reduce the lifetime. The saturation of lifetime is discussed. As a result, in-band pumping of Nd: doped laser is good for improving the efficiency and achieving narrow-linewidth of laser wavelength due to less population inversion; off-band pumping is benefit for extracting high pulse energy thanks of large population inversion.

Intersubband Auger recombination and population inversion in quantum-well subbands

The intersubband-Auger-recombination time of electrons under population-inversion conditions in a single quantum well is calculated by taking into account momentum- and energy-conservation rules, and by employing Fermi-Dirac statistics. The screened matrix element of the electron-electron interaction and the overlap integral are calculated for an infinitely deep quantum well. The results are in a good agreement with published experimental data. As a major nonradiative process, the Auger recombination is related to threshold current of infrared lasers based on intersubband transitions in quantum-well structures. The realization of these devices and other limitations to achieving population inversion are discussed. In view of the results, development of these lasers for emission wavelengths corresponding to energies below the LO-phonon energy seems feasible.

Population inversion calculations using near resonant charge exchange as a pumping mechanism

Near resonance charge exchange between ions of a large ionization potential gas such as helium or neon and vapors of metals such as zinc, cadmium, selenium, or tellurium has produced laser action in the metal ion gas. The possibility of obtaining population inversions in near resonant charge exchange systems (Xe-Ca, Xe-Mg, Xe-Sr, Xe-Ba, Ar-Mg, N-Ca) was investigated. The analysis is an initial value problem that utilizes rate equations for the densities of relevant levels of the laser gas (Ca, Ba, Mg, or Sr) and an electron energy equation. Electron excitation rates are calculated using the Bohr-Thomson approximation for the cross section. Approximations to experimental values of the electron ionization cross section and the ion-atom charge exchange cross section are used. Preliminary results have been obtained for the Ca-Xe system and show that it is possible to obtain gains greater than 10 to the 14th power/m with inversion times up to 8x10 to the minus 7th power second. A possible charge exchange laser system using a MPD arc plasma accelerator is also described.

Quantum mechanical calculations of vibrational population inversion in chemical reactions - Numerically exact L-squared-amplitude-density study of the H2Br reactive system

Numerically exact, fully three-dimensional quantum mechanicl reactive scattering calculations are reported for the H2Br system. Both the exchange (H + H-prime Br to H-prime + HBr) and abstraction (H + HBR to H2 + Br) reaction channels are included in the calculations. The present results are the first completely converged three-dimensional quantum calculations for a system involving a highly exoergic reaction channel (the abstraction process). It is found that the production of vibrationally hot H2 in the abstraction reaction, and hence the extent of population inversion in the products, is a sensitive function of initial HBr rotational state and collision energy.

Amplification of radiation near cyclotron frequency due to electron population inversion

Amplification of electromagnetic waves via the cyclotron maser mechanism by a population of weakly relativistic electrons is studied. The effect of a tenuous population of low energy background plasma is included. It is found that both the ordinary and extraordinary modes can be excited by the weakly relativistic electrons with a loss-cone distribution. The growth rate for the extraordinary mode is much higher than that for the ordinary mode. Velocity spread in the energetic electron distribution function may reduce the growth rate by a factor of approximately 10 from that in the monoenergetic case. The maximum growth rate for the fast extraordinary mode (X mode) occurs near the upper hybrid cutoff frequency. Numerical results are obtained and discussed.

Population inversion calculations using near resonant charge exchange as a pumping mechanism.

A theoretical study is conducted to investigate the possibility of obtaining inversions in a plasma of metals such as Mg, Ca, Sr, or Ba by charge exchange with inert gas ions. The gases considered include He, Ne, Xe, Ar, or N. The analysis uses rate equations to calculate the density of the various ion levels and an energy equation to calculate the electron temperature. Both charge exchange and electron collisional excitation of the various ion levels are considered.

Population inversion mechanisms producing nuclear lasing in He-3-Ar, Xe, Kr, Cl, and UF6

The paper examines the lasing excitation mechanisms of present nuclear lasers, with a view to developing more efficient, higher power nuclear lasers. Particular attention is given to volumetric nuclear discharges pumped by either the He-3(n, p)H-3 reaction or the U-235F6(n, ff)FF reaction. Insight gained from these laser systems will make it possible to determine the major excitation mechanisms and then to look for new gaseous laser systems where these excitation mechanisms dominate.

Infrared radiation and inversion population of CO2 laser levels in Venusian and Martian atmospheres

Formation mechanisms of nonequilibrium 10 micron CO2 molecule radiation and the possible existence of a natural laser effect in the upper atmospheres of Venus and Mars are theoretically studied. An analysis is made of the excitation process of CO2 molecule vibrational-band levels (with natural isotropic content) induced by direct solar radiation in bands 10.6, 9.4, 4.3, 2.7 and 2.0 microns. The model of partial vibrational-band temperatures was used in the case. The problem of IR radiation transfer in vibrational-rotational bands was solved in the radiation escape approximation.

Terahertz lasers and amplifiers based on resonant optical phonon scattering to achieve population inversion

The present invention provides quantum cascade lasers and amplifier that operate in a frequency range of about 1 Terahertz to about 10 Terahertz. In one aspect, a quantum cascade laser of the invention includes a semiconductor heterostructure that provides a plurality of lasing modules connected in series. Each lasing module includes a plurality of quantum well structure that collectively generate at least an upper lasing state, a lower lasing state, and a relaxation state such that the upper and the lower lasing states are separated by an energy corresponding to an optical frequency in a range of about 1 to about 10 Terahertz. The lower lasing state is selectively depopulated via resonant LO-phonon scattering of electrons into the relaxation state.

Vibrational population distributions in nonequilibrium nozzle expansion flows

Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations of the vibrational population distribution in nonequilibrium nozzle expansion flows of gas mixtures are reported. These studies were directed toward determining whether vibrational energy exchange pumping could lead to laser action on the vibrational bands of a diatomic molecule. Three different types of experiments were conducted. These showed (1) that vibrational energy was preferentially transferred from N2 to CO in supersonic nozzle flows containing these gases; (2) that under some conditions this vibrational energy exchange pumping mechanism created population inversions in the vibrational levels of CO; and (3) that at large expansion ratios the magnitude of these population inversions was sufficient to sustain lasing in the nozzle. A theoretical model was developed to calculate vibrational state population distributions in gas dynamic expansions of a mixture of diatomic gases. Although only isothermal calculations have been completed, these data indicate that population inversions are predicted for conditions similar to those obtained in the nozzle expansion flows.
