The LSBmax algorithm for boosting resilience of electric grids post (N‐2) contingencies

Abstract A computationally improved algorithm is presented to find the best transmission switching (TS) candidate for boosting resilience of electricity grids subject to ( N ‐2) contingencies. Here, resilience is computed as the reduction in load shed after the above‐mentioned ( N‐ ) contingencies. TS is a planned line outage, and past research shows that changing the transmission system's topology changes the power flow and removes post contingency violations. Finding the best TS candidate in a computationally suitable time for effectively boosting resilience is a challenge. The best TS candidate is found using a novel heuristic method by decreasing the search space based on proximity to the bus with the maximum load shedding (LSB). The LSB algorithm is faster than existing algorithms in the literature; and, it is compatible with both the AC and DC optimal power flow formulations. To validate the authors' claims of speedup and accuracy, two metrics are used to analyze the results from the IEEE 39‐bus and 118‐bus systems. Finally, the inherent parallelism of the LSB algorithm is leveraged on a high‐performance computing platform and applied to the large‐scale Polish 2383‐bus test system to validate scalability in both size and speedup in computation time.

An Improved Transmission Switching Algorithm for Managing Post-(N-1) Contingencies in Electricity Networks

In this presentation, we detail the shortcomings of existing transmission switching (TS) methodologies for preventing post-contingency loss of load in wide area electric power networks. Following that, we present a bi-level algorithm as an improvement to the state of the art. We show proof-of-concept level results that indicate computational viability, fast solutions, and the ability to pick the same best candidate as non computationally viable methods. Further, our method also minimizes load shedding after the contingency, thus enhancing the reliability and security of electricity supply. We also include a futuristic scenario of increased renewables and decreased natural gas sourced generators to show promising results. We grant permission for our presentation to be recorded and uploaded by the conference organizers.

On Secured Spinning Reserve Deployment of Energy-Limited Resources Against Contingencies

Featured with fast response abilities and high ramp rates, energy storage systems (ESS), such as pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) plants and battery storage systems (BSS), are considered as key first-responders to provide spinning reserve in response to system contingencies. However, ESSs are energy-limited resources, and their sustained spinning reserve deployment is restricted by the stored energy and available capacity. Indeed, the spinning reserve deployment against contingencies may deviate actual state-of-charge (SOC) from the scheduled value, inducing potential SOC boundary violations and non-dispatchability in later hours. This paper proposes the post-contingency operation model and the spinning reserve secure constraints to address these issues. The post-contingency operation model describes that spinning reserve from ESSs is promptly deployed when contingency occurs, and then gradually substituted by quick-start units when they are switched online. By leveraging this operation strategy, spinning reserve secure constraints in terms of SOC headrooms are adopted to guarantee its deplorability. Furthermore, a modified IEEE 118-bus system with multiple PSHs and BSSs is used to verify the proposed approach.

A Scalable Mixed-Integer Decomposition Method for Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow with Complementarity Constraints

This project aimed to develop a scalable algorithm for security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) under contingency scenarios. In particular, the SCOPF problem targeted in the GO Competition is challenging because of the nonconvexity, its nonsmoothness, and the problem size, which increases with the number of contingency events. Complementarity constraints imposed in post-contingency variables are particularly challenging because they lead to a violation of constraint qualifications at any feasible point.

A Solar-assisted Voltage Optimization Method for Transmission Solar Network Power System

This paper proposes a new formulation and solution algorithm that uses transmission level solar inverters to address the security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) problem. The goal is to stabilize voltage fluctuations in transmission networks in base case and contingency scenarios, by using bulk solar power plant with a minimal number of post-contingency corrections. To achieve this goal, a two-stage volt/var optimization method is proposed to first correct all voltage violations with the volt-var alternating current optimal power flow (ACOPF) algorithm for a base case. Then a linearized SCOPF volt-var control algorithm is proposed to identify the corrective actions for all potential voltage violations in all contingency scenarios. The proposed method was tested and validated on a modified IEEE 118-bus system with solar photovoltaic (PV) data.
