Using Power Diagrams to Build Optimal Unstructured Meshes for C-Grid Models

The Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) for Ocean (-O), Sea-Ice (-SI) and Land-Ice (-LI), in addition to the Coastal Ocean Marine Prediction Across Scales (COMPAS) are two novel general circulation models designed to resolve coupled ocean-ice dynamics over variable spatial scales using non-uniform unstructured grids. Both models are based on a conservative mimetic finite-difference/volume formulation (TRiSK), in which staggered momentum, vorticity and mass-based degrees- of-freedom are distributed over an orthogonal 'primal-dual' mesh.

A Revised Method of Presenting Wavenumber-Frequency Power Spectrum Diagrams That Reveals the Asymmetric Nature of Tropical Large-scale Waves

The popular method of presenting wavenumber-frequency power spectrum diagrams for studying tropical large-scale waves in the literature is shown to give an incomplete presentation of these waves. The so-called "convectively-coupled Kelvin (mixed Rossby-gravity) waves" are presented as existing only in the symmetric (antisymmetric) component of the diagrams. This is obviously not consistent with the published composite/regression studies of "convectively-coupled Kelvin waves," which illustrate the asymmetric nature of these waves. The cause of this inconsistency is revealed in this note and a revised method of presenting the power spectrum diagrams is proposed. When this revised method is used, "convectively-coupled Kelvin waves" do show anti-symmetric components, and "convectively-coupled mixed Rossby-gravity waves (also known as Yanai waves)" do show a hint of symmetric components. These results bolster a published proposal that these waves be called "chimeric Kelvin waves," "chimeric mixed Rossby-gravity waves," etc. This revised method of presenting power spectrum diagrams offers a more rigorous means of comparing the General Circulation Models (GCM) output with observations by calling attention to the capability of GCMs in correctly simulating the asymmetric characteristics of the equatorial waves.

Engineering model system study for a regenerative fuel cell: Study report

Key design issues of the regenerative fuel cell system concept were studied and a design definition of an alkaline electrolyte based engineering model system or low Earth orbit missions was completed. Definition of key design issues for a regenerative fuel cell system include gaseous reactant storage, shared heat exchangers and high pressure pumps. A power flow diagram for the 75 kW initial space station and the impact of different regenerative fuel cell modular sizes on the total 5 year to orbit weight and volume are determined. System characteristics, an isometric drawing, component sizes and mass and energy balances are determined for the 10 kW engineering model system. An open loop regenerative fuel cell concept is considered for integration of the energy storage system with the life support system of the space station. Technical problems and their solutions, pacing technologies and required developments and demonstrations for the regenerative fuel cell system are defined.

Advances in spaceborne synthetic aperture radar sensor technology

The evolution of space SARs for NASA projects since Seasat (1978) is surveyed, with an emphasis on hardware development. The fundamental principles of SAR are reviewed; the SIR-A and SIR-B instruments flown as Shuttle payloads are characterized; their antennas, transmitters, receivers, and data subsystems are described; the advantages offered by the SIR-C dual-frequency (L and C band) dual-polarization distributed SAR (being developed for a future Shuttle flight and as the basis of an SAR for the Earth Observing System) are explained; and a number of technical challenges are identified (including RF elements, structural fidelity, pointing accuracy, data handling, and dc power). Drawings, diagrams, sample images, photographs, and tables are provided.

The IRAS colors of normal galaxies

In the IRAS color-color diagram, galaxies powered only by star formation are distributed in a band such that as systems get cooler at 12/25 microns they get warmer at 60/100 microns. A simple phenomenology is proposed which describes the emission from each galaxy as a combination of two components: cool, relatively constant 'cirrus' emission from the neutral medium, and from 'active' regions warmer emission whose colors depend on mean physical parameters in these regions. The model accounts for the IRAS colors of all galaxies detected as point sources in all four bands. The model implies that a galaxy's far-infrared flux as measured by IRAS is not simply proportional to the recent star formation rate, because only a (variable) fraction of the infrared is due to massive young stars, and only part of these stars' luminosity is reemitted in the infrared.

Generalised Primal-Dual Grids for Unstructured Co-Volume Schemes

The generation of high-quality staggered unstructured grids is considered, leading to the development of a new optimisation-based strategy designed to construct weighted 'Regular-Power' tessellations appropriate for co-volume type numerical discretisation techniques. This new framework aims to extend the conventional Delaunay-Voronoi primal-dual structure; seeking to assemble generalised orthogonal tessellations with enhanced geometric quality. The construction of these grids is motivated by the desire to improve the performance and accuracy of numerical methods based on unstructured co-volume type schemes, including various staggered grid techniques for the simulation of fluid dynamics and hyperbolic transport. In this study, a new hybrid optimisation strategy is proposed; seeking to optimise the geometry, topology and weights associated with general, two-dimensional Regular-Power tessellations using a combination of gradient-ascent and energy-based techniques. The performance of this new method is tested experimentally, with a range of complex, multi-resolution primal-dual grids generated for various coastal and regional ocean modelling applications.

Hardware and Software Engineering

The Launch Control System (LCS) is a part of the system used to launch the Space Launch System (SLS). It monitors and control of both vehicle and ground systems for SLS. My internship this spring was focused both on the hardware and software aspects of the command and control system. During my internship I worked in two groups, the Record and Playback Subsystem (RPS) and Kennedy Ground Control Subsystems (KGCS). During my time on RPS, I worked on automating the updating of displays and engineering reports. While on KGCS I worked on creating a power distribution diagram of the Control System Development Lab (CDL) and a new trainer for new interns or employees to gain an understanding of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

Comparison of electrically driven lasers for space power transmission

High-power lasers in space could provide power for a variety of future missions such as spacecraft electric power requirements and laser propulsion. This study investigates four electrically pumped laser systems, all scaled to 1-MW laser output, that could provide power to spacecraft. The four laser systems are krypton fluoride, copper vapor, laser diode array, and carbon dioxide. Each system was powered by a large solar photovoltaic array which, in turn, provided power for the appropriate laser power conditioning subsystem. Each system was block-diagrammed, and the power and efficiency were found for each subsystem block component. The copper vapor system had the lowest system efficiency (6 percent). The CO2 laser was found to be the most readily scalable but has the disadvantage of long laser wavelength.

One-megawatt solar pumped and electrically driven lasers for space power transmission

High power lasers in space could provide power for a variety of future space missions such as spacecraft electric power requirements and laser propulsion. This study investigates four electrically pumped laser systems, krypton fluoride, copper vapor, laser diode array, and the carbon dioxide laser, all scaled to 1-MW laser output. Each system obtained its primary power from a large solar photovoltaic array which, in turn, provides power for the appropriate laser power conditioning subsystem. Each system was block-diagrammed, and the power and efficiency were found for each subsystem. The laser diode array had the highest solar-to-laser efficiency (6 percent) and smallest radiator area making it the most advantageous of the electrically driven lasers studied. This system was then compared with an iodine solar pumped laser system previously studied. The diode array had a better wavelength with regard to transmission optics mass, but it also had a heavier radiator because of its lower temperature radiator requirement. A more advanced solar pumped laser could emerge as the preferred laser system for space applications.

IRAS observations of starburst galaxies

Far infrared properties of Starburst galaxies were analyzed using IRAS observations at 25, 60, and 100 micrometers. Seventy-nine of 102 Starburst galaxies from the list of Balzano were detected. These galaxies have high IR luminosities of up to a few 10 to the 12th power L sub 0 and concentrate in a small area of the IR color - color diagram. The IR power law spectral indices, alpha, lie within the ranges -2.5 <alpha(60,25)< -1.5 and -1.5 <alpha(100,60)< 0. These observed indices can be interpreted in terms of a cold disk component and a warm component. More than 80% of the 60 micrometer emission comes from the warm component. The fraction of the 60 micrometer emission attributable to the warm component can be used as an activity indicator.

Development of a multikilowatt ion thruster power processor

A feasibility study was made of the application of silicon-controlled, rectifier series, resonant inverter, power conditioning technology to electric propulsion power processing operating from a 200 to 400 Vdc solar array bus. A power system block diagram was generated to meet the electrical requirements of a 20 CM hollow cathode, mercury bombardment, ion engine. The SCR series resonant inverter was developed as a primary means of power switching and conversion, and the analog signal-to-discrete-time-interval converter control system was applied to achieve good regulation. A complete breadboard was designed, fabricated, and tested with a resistive load bank, and critical power processor areas relating to efficiency, weight, and part count were identified.

Current limiting remote power control module

The power source for the Space Station Freedom will be fully utilized nearly all of the time. As such, any loads on the system will need to operate within expected limits. Should any load draw an inordinate amount of power, the bus voltage for the system may sag and disrupt the operation of other loads. To protect the bus and loads some type of power interface between the bus and each load must be provided. This interface is most crucial when load faults occur. A possible system configuration is presented. The proposed interface is the Current Limiting Remote Power Controller (CL-RPC). Such an interface should provide the following power functions: limit overloading and resulting undervoltage; prevent catastrophic failure and still provide for redundancy management within the load; minimize cable heating; and provide accurate current measurement. A functional block diagram of the power processing stage of a CL-RPC is included. There are four functions that drive the circuit design: rate control of current; current sensing; the variable conductance switch (VCS) technology; and the algorithm used for current limiting. Each function is discussed separately.

Spectral and correlated timing behaviour of GX 5-1

We have analyzed the X-ray spectral and fast timing behavior of the Z-source GX 5-1 using X-ray color-color diagrams (CDs), hardness-intensity diagrams (HIDs) and power spectra. We used all EXOSAT ME data on GX 5-1, a total of seven observations during 1983-1985. We detect, for the first time in GX 5-1, secular motion of the well-known 'Z' pattern through the CDs and HIDs. This behavior resembles Cyg X-2, but in GX 5-1 has a smaller amplitude. We find that the power spectra do not change when the 'Z' moves, and are only dependent on the position inside the 'Z'. We also report, for the first time in GX 5-1, indications of flaring-branch (FB) like behavior, both during one of our EXOSAT observations, and during observations done with Ginga. As the secular changes of the position of the 'Z' pattern in the CD and HID are relatively small we investigated in detail the systematic changes in the EXOSAT ME detectors using the only bright and steady X-ray 'standard star', the Crab Nebula. Finally, we determined an intrinsic CD of GX 5-1 (i.e. a soft photon flux-ratio versus hard photon flux-ratio diagram) in a model independent way, by applying a first order correction for the detector efficiency. It is shown, using data of the Crab Nebula, that this method works reasonably well for the determination of intrinsic colors.
