A high-order staggered meshless method for elliptic problems

Here, we present a new meshless method for scalar diffusion equations, which is motivated by their compatible discretizations on primal-dual grids. Unlike the latter though, our approach is truly meshless because it only requires the graph of nearby neighbor connectivity of the discretization points. This graph defines a local primal-dual grid complex with a virtual dual grid, in the sense that specification of the dual metric attributes is implicit in the method's construction. Our method combines a topological gradient operator on the local primal grid with a generalized moving least squares approximation of the divergence on the local dual grid. We show that the resulting approximation of the div-grad operator maintains polynomial reproduction to arbitrary orders and yields a meshless method, which attains $O(h^{m})$ convergence in both $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms, similar to mixed finite element methods. We demonstrate this convergence on curvilinear domains using manufactured solutions in two and three dimensions. Application of the new method to problems with discontinuous coefficients reveals solutions that are qualitatively similar to those of compatible mesh-based discretizations.

Generalised Primal-Dual Grids for Unstructured Co-Volume Schemes

The generation of high-quality staggered unstructured grids is considered, leading to the development of a new optimisation-based strategy designed to construct weighted 'Regular-Power' tessellations appropriate for co-volume type numerical discretisation techniques. This new framework aims to extend the conventional Delaunay-Voronoi primal-dual structure; seeking to assemble generalised orthogonal tessellations with enhanced geometric quality. The construction of these grids is motivated by the desire to improve the performance and accuracy of numerical methods based on unstructured co-volume type schemes, including various staggered grid techniques for the simulation of fluid dynamics and hyperbolic transport. In this study, a new hybrid optimisation strategy is proposed; seeking to optimise the geometry, topology and weights associated with general, two-dimensional Regular-Power tessellations using a combination of gradient-ascent and energy-based techniques. The performance of this new method is tested experimentally, with a range of complex, multi-resolution primal-dual grids generated for various coastal and regional ocean modelling applications.

Primal-Dual Differentiable Programming for Distribution System Critical Load Restoration: Preprint

Swift and reliable critical load restoration (CLR) can help make a distribution system resilient towards extreme events. To optimally achieve that, alongside practical concerns such as limiting online computational burden, some studies leverage model-free reinforcement learning (RL) to train control policies. Despite the advantages provided by RL algorithms, these approaches suffer from two issues: 1) the lack of a proper mechanism for constraint enforcement, and 2) poor sample efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, a primal-dual differentiable programming (PDDP) method is developed for guiding the training leading to a constraint-satisfying policy. Additionally, the model-based nature of the proposed method aims at improving sample efficiency. The experiment on a CLR problem demonstrates that PDDP can effectively train a control policy that both achieves desirable performance and satisfies required constraints.

Loss Minimization With Optimal Power Dispatch in Multi-Frequency HVac Power Systems

Low-frequency high-voltage ac transmission scheme has recently been proposed as an alternative approach for bulk power transmission. This paper proposes a multi-period optimal power flow (OPF) for a multi-frequency HVac transmission system that interconnects both conventional 50/60-Hz and low-frequency grids using back-to-back converters with a centralized control scheme. The OPF objective is to minimize system losses by determining the optimal dispatch for generators, shunt capacitors, and converters. The OPF constraints include the operational constraints of all HVac grid and converter stations. The resulting mixed-integer nonlinear programing problem is solved using a proposed framework based on the predictor-corrector primal-dual interior-point method. The proposed OPF formulation and solution approach are verified using a multi-frequency HVac transmission system that is modified from the IEEE 57-bus system. Here, the results with the optimal dispatch from the proposed method during a simulated day show a significant loss reduction and an improved voltage regulation compared to those when an arbitrary dispatch is chosen.

Real-Time Feedback-Based Optimization of Distribution Grids: A Unified Approach

This paper develops an algorithmic framework for real-time optimization of distribution-level distributed energy resources (DERs). The framework optimizes the operation of both DERs that are individually controllable and groups of DERs (i.e., aggregations) that are jointly controlled at an electrical point of connection. From an electrical standpoint, wye and delta single- and multi-phase connections are accounted for. The algorithm enables (groups of) DERs to pursue given performance objectives, while adjusting their (aggregate) powers to respond to services requested by grid operators and to maintain electrical quantities within engineering limits. The design of the algorithm leverages a time-varying bi-level problem formulation capturing various performance objectives and engineering constraints, and an online implementation of primal-dual projected-gradient methods. The gradient steps are suitably modified to accommodate appropriate measurements from the distribution network and the DERs. Stability and convergence claims are established in terms of tracking of the solution of the time-varying optimization problem. Finally, the method is tested in a realistic distribution.

Adaptive primal–dual control for distributed energy resource management

With the increased adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution networks, their coordinated control with a DER management system (DERMS) that provides grid services (e.g., voltage regulation, virtual power plant) is becoming more necessary. One particular type of DERMS using primal–dual control has recently been found to be very effective at providing multiple grid services among an aggregation of DERs; however, the main parameter, the primal–dual step size, must be manually tuned for the DERMS to be effective, which can take a considerable amount of engineering time and labor. To this end, we design a simple method that self-tunes the step size(s) and adapts it to changing system conditions. Additionally, it gives the DER management operator the ability to prioritize among possibly competing grid services. Here we evaluate the automatic tuning method on a simulation model of a real-world feeder in Colorado with data obtained from an electric utility. Through a variety of scenarios, we demonstrate that the DERMS with automatically and adaptively tuned step sizes provides higher-quality grid services than a DERMS with a manually tuned step size.
