A quantitative and holistic circular economy assessment framework at the micro level

Circular Economy (CE) aims to solve resource, waste, and emission challenges by creating a production-to-consumption supply chain that is restorative and environmentally benign. A variety of metrics has been developed with the focus mainly on the macro and meso levels. This work introduces a micro level CE assessment framework that provides i) a set of indicators and metrics with sector-specific dimensions, ii) quantitative and holistic CE overall and category-based metrics, iii) media for data visualization and analysis of CE indicators, and iv) an analytical tool to assess multi-national businesses and the multi-scale and interconnected CE supply chains. Using this quantitative tool, companies are able to track their transition towards CE, conduct temporal analysis, and benchmark their performance against their peers and industry’s standards. The applicability and the capabilities of the developed CE assessment framework is demonstrated through three case studies, with the results demonstrating a clear trend towards circularity.

Large exchange-driven intrinsic circular dichroism of a chiral 2D hybrid perovskite

Abstract In two-dimensional chiral metal-halide perovskites, chiral organic spacers endow structural and optical chirality to the metal-halide sublattice, enabling exquisite control of light, charge, and electron spin. The chiroptical properties of metal-halide perovskites have been measured by transmissive circular dichroism spectroscopy, which necessitates thin-film samples. Here, by developing a reflection-based approach, we characterize the intrinsic, circular polarization-dependent complex refractive index for a prototypical two-dimensional chiral lead-bromide perovskite and report large circular dichroism for single crystals. Comparison with ab initio theory reveals the large circular dichroism arises from the inorganic sublattice rather than the chiral ligand and is an excitonic phenomenon driven by electron-hole exchange interactions, which breaks the degeneracy of transitions between Rashba-Dresselhaus-split bands, resulting in a Cotton effect. Our study suggests that previous data for spin-coated films largely underestimate the optical chirality and provides quantitative insights into the intrinsic optical properties of chiral perovskites for chiroptical and spintronic applications.

Direct observation of two-dimensional magnons in atomically thin CrI 3

Magnons are collective spin excitations in crystals with long-range magnetic order. The emergent van der Waals magnets provide a highly tunable platform to explore magnetic excitations in the two-dimensional limit with intriguing properties, manifesting from their honeycomb lattice structure and switchable magnetic configurations. Here, we report the direct observation of two-dimensional magnons through magneto-Raman spectroscopy with optical selection rules determined by the interplay between crystal symmetry, layer number and magnetic states in atomically thin CrI 3 . In monolayers, we observe an acoustic magnon mode at ~0.3 meV. It has strict cross-circularly polarized selection rules locked to the magnetization direction that originates from the conservation of angular momentum of photons and magnons dictated by three-fold rotational symmetry. Additionally, we reveal optical magnon modes at ~17 meV. This mode is Raman silent in monolayers, but optically active in bilayers and bulk due to a relaxation of the parity criterion resulting from the layer index. In the layered antiferromagnetic states, we directly resolve two degenerate optical magnon modes with opposite angular momentum and conjugate optical selection rules. From these measurements, we quantitatively extract the spin-wave gap, magnetic anisotropy and intralayer and interlayer exchange constants, and establish two-dimensional magnets as a new platform for exploring magnon physics.
