Electromagnetic signatures of a chiral quantum spin liquid

Quantum spin liquids (QSL) have emerged as a captivating subject within interacting spin systems that exhibit no magnetic ordering even at the lowest temperature accessible experimentally. However, definitive experimental evidence remains elusive. In light of the recent surge in theoretical and experimental interest in the half-filled Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, which offers the potential for stabilizing a chiral QSL, we investigate the electromagnetic signatures of this phase to facilitate experimental detection. Utilizing a combination of parton mean-field theory and unbiased density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we systematically examine the electrical charge and orbital electrical current associated with a spinon excitation in the chiral QSL. Additionally, we calculate the longitudinal and transverse optical conductivities below the Mott gap. Furthermore, employing quantum field theory analysis, we unravel the connection between spinon excitations and emergent as well as physical gauge fields. Our results demonstrate that the chiral QSL phase exhibits a distinct electromagnetic response, even within a Mott insulator regime. This finding holds great potential for enabling the experimental detection of this long-sought-after phase.

Pyrochlore NaYbO2: A Potential Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate

The search for quantum spin liquids (QSL) and chemical doping in such materials to explore superconductivity have continuously attracted intense interest. Here, we report the discovery of a potential QSL candidate, pyrochlore-lattice β-NaYbO2. Colorless and transparent NaYbO2 single crystals, layered α-NaYbO2 (∼250 μm on edge) and octahedral β-NaYbO2 (∼50 μm on edge), were grown for the first time. Synchrotron X-ray single-crystal diffraction unambiguously determined that the newfound β-NaYbO2 belongs to the three-dimensional pyrochlore structure characterized by the R3̅m space group, corroborated by synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and pair distribution function. Magnetic measurements revealed no long-range magnetic order or spin glass behavior down to 0.4 K with a low boundary spin frustration factor of 17.5, suggesting a potential QSL ground state. Under high magnetic fields, the potential QSL state was broken and spins order. Our findings reveal that NaYbO2 is a fertile playground for studying novel quantum states.

Evidence of Dirac Quantum Spin Liquid in YbZn 2⁢ GaO 5

The emergence of a quantum spin liquid (QSL), a state of matter that can result when electron spins are highly correlated but do not become ordered, has been the subject of a considerable body of research in condensed matter physics [1,2]. Spin liquid states have been proposed as hosts for high-temperature superconductivity [3] and can host topological properties with potential applications in quantum information science [4]. The excitations of most quantum spin liquids are not conventional spin waves but rather quasiparticles known as spinons, whose existence is well established experimentally only in one-dimensional systems; the unambiguous experimental realization of QSL behavior in higher dimensions remains challenging. Here, in this work, we investigate the novel compound $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of effective spin-1/2 moments with no detectable inherent chemical disorder. Thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single crystal samples of $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$ exclude the possibility of long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.06 K, demonstrate a quadratic power law for the specific heat and reveal a continuum of magnetic excitations in parts of the Brillouin zone. Both low-temperature thermodynamics and inelastic neutron scattering spectra suggest that $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$ is a U(1) Dirac QSL with spinon excitations concentrated at certain points in the Brillouin zone. We advanced these results by performing additional specific heat measurements under finite fields, further confirming the theoretical expectations for a Dirac QSL on the triangular lattice of $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$.

Pressure-induced insulator-to-metal transition in the quantum spin liquid candidate lithium ytterbium diselenide

Metallization of quantum spin liquid (QSL) materials has long been considered as a potential route toward unconventional superconductivity. Here, we investigate the pressurization of lithium ytterbium diselenide (LiYbSe 2 ), a three-dimensional QSL candidate with a pyrochlore structure. High-pressure X-ray diffraction (up to 15 GPa) and Raman spectroscopy (up to 48 GPa) reveal no significant structural changes within this pressure range. Remarkably insulating, LiYbSe 2 exhibits a resistance below 10 5 Ω only at pressures exceeding 25 GPa, accompanied by a gradual reduction of band gap upon compression. Interestingly, an insulator-to-metal transition occurs around 68 GPa, and the metallic behavior persists up to 123.5 GPa, the highest pressure achieved in this study. A possible sign of magnetic transitions is also observed. The insulator-to-metal transition in LiYbSe 2 under high pressure presents an ideal platform to explore the pressure effects on QSL candidates of spin-1/2 Yb 3+ systems with various lattice patterns.

Electronic density of states of a U ( 1 ) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface. I. Orbital magnetic field effects

A quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface is an exotic insulator that hosts neutral Fermi surfaces inside the insulating gap. In an external magnetic field, it has been pointed out that the neutral Fermi surfaces are Landau quantized to form Landau levels due to the coupling to the induced emergent gauge magnetic field. In this paper, we calculate the electronic density of states (as observed in tunneling experiments) of the quantum spin liquid in an orbital magnetic field. Here, we find that the Landau levels from the neutral Fermi surfaces give rise to a set of steps emerging at the upper and lower Hubbard band edges. Each of the Hubbard band edge steps further develop into a band edge resonance peak when a weak gauge binding arising from the gauge field fluctuations is taken into account. Importantly, each Hubbard band edge step and its resulting resonance peak in the weak gauge binding are found to have a corresponding Landau level from the neutral Fermi surfaces, so the Hubbard band edge steps and the band edge resonance peaks provide signatures to the unique feature that characterizes the Landau quantization of the in-gap neutral Fermi surfaces in the spin liquid. We further consider the strong gauge-binding regime where the band edge resonance peaks move into the Mott gap and develop into true in-gap bound states. In the strong gauge binding regime, we solve the Landau-level spectrum of the in-gap bound states in an orbital magnetic field. For the in-gap bound state with a Mexican-hat-like band dispersion, we find that the envelop energy to have a state excited from the bound state Landau levels decreases quadratically with the magnetic field. The quadratic decrease behavior of the envelop energy is consistent with the intuition that applying magnetic field localizes the states and energetically promotes the in-gap bound states formation. Finally, we discuss the connection of our results to the electronic density of states spectra measured in the layered 1T-TaS 2 . We point out that a quantum spin liquid with a quasibound state in the upper Hubbard band can give the density of states spectra similar to the one measured in the experiment.

Spectroscopic Demarcation of Emergent Photons and Spinons in a Dipolar-Octupolar Quantum Spin Liquid

The identification of fractionalized excitations in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) remains a central challenge in condensed matter physics. In dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, such as Ce 2⁢ Zr 2 ⁢O 7 , the candidate 𝜋-flux quantum spin ice (QSI) state is predicted to host both gapless emergent photons and a continuum of spinons. However, resolving these modes at zero field is complicated by their spectral overlap and the presence of nonmagnetic scattering near zero energy. Here, in this study, we report neutron scattering experiments on Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 under a magnetic field along the [1, 1, 1] direction. In contrast to previous unpolarized studies at zero field that relied on high-temperature subtraction, we use a same-temperature high-field subtraction protocol to isolate the photon and spinon modes. Leveraging the selective coupling of the magnetic field to the dipolar degrees of freedom, we demonstrate the spectroscopic demarcation of these excitations. We observe that weak fields (≈ 0.15 T) suppress the low-energy photon weight while leaving the high-energy spinon continuum robust, albeit hardened. Our results, supported by gauge mean-field theory and exact diagonalization calculations, provide strong evidence for the 𝜋-flux QSI state and introduce a powerful field-tuning protocol for investigating DO-QSLs.

Nonlinear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of the delafossite proximate quantum spin liquid candidates KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular-lattice resonating-valence-bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 . We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe 2 heat capacity using high-temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe 2 fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg ratio J 2 / J 1 to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 shows that the smaller A -site Na + ion has a larger J 2 / J 1 ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe 2 increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases J 2 / J 1 . In conclusion, these results show how the periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the A YbSe 2 materials in a controlled way.

Photoinduced frustration modulation in 𝜅-type quantum spin liquid candidates

Geometric frustration is a key parameter controlling electronic and magnetic properties of quantum spin liquid systems, yet remains challenging to tune. Here, we coherently drive molecular vibrations with midinfrared pulses in two organic quantum spin liquid candidates, the insulating 𝜅−(BEDT−TTF) 2⁢ Cu 2 ⁢(CN) 3 and the metallic 𝜅−(BEDT−TTF) 4 ⁢Hg 2.89 ⁢Br 8 , and probe their electronic response through ultrafast reflectivity measurements. We observe a nonlinear coupling between local molecular vibrations and nonlocal phonons, which is expected to directly modulate the geometric frustration of their triangular lattice. Furthermore, our findings establish a promising route to dynamically control frustration in nonbipartite quantum materials.

Quasiparticle Interference in Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

We study quasiparticle interference (QPI) in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) for electrons tunneling into the QSL. The local tunneling conductance around a spin vacancy or localized vison reveals unique features associated with fractionalized Majorana fermions, chargons, and visons. In certain parameter regimes, the single-spinon density of states and momentum dispersion can both be directly extracted from the tunneling conductance. In conclusion, our results suggest that QPI is a promising tool for identifying the Kitaev QSL and its fractionalized excitations.

Evidence for field induced quantum spin liquid behavior in a spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet

One of the most important issues in modern condensed matter physics is the realization of fractionalized excitations, such as the Majorana excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. To this aim, the 3d-based Kitaev material Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 is a promising candidate whose magnetic phase diagram of B // a* contains a field-induced intermediate magnetically disordered phase within 7.5 T < |B| < 10 T. The experimental observations, including the restoration of the crystalline point group symmetry in the angle-dependent torque and the coexisting magnon excitations and spinon-continuum in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum, provide strong evidence that this disordered phase is a field induced quantum spin liquid with partially polarized spins. Our variational Monte Carlo simulation with the effective K-J 1 -Γ-Γ'-J 3 model reproduces the experimental data and further supports this conclusion.

Pressure-induced tuning of the triangular-honeycomb structure of ferroelectric quantum spin liquid candidate, TbInO 3

The pressure response of the triangular-honeycomb-structured quantum spin liquid candidate, TbInO 3 , has been determined via neutron powder diffraction up to 5.75(5) GPa. The system retains hexagonal symmetry up to the maximum pressure considered. The structure was found to compress less anisotropically than related compounds, though it is more compressible within the 2D plane than between subsequent layers. Through extracting the O-atom coordinates we find experimental evidence that may suggest the enhancement of ferroelectricity at pressures as low as 3 GPa.

First-principles derivation of magnetic interactions in the triangular quantum spin liquid candidates KYb C h 2 ( C h = S , Se , Te ) and A YbSe 2 ( A = Na , Rb )

The AYb Ch 2 (A=alkali metal, Ch=chalcogen) delafossites are a family of crystals which have a triangular lattice of effective S=1/2 moments on their Yb atoms. They hold great promise for the realization of the triangular quantum spin liquid state because of their defect-minimized growth and the ability to interchange chemical constituencies among the family. Here we use ab initio computations to evaluate the exchange couplings of four realized (and one theoretical) rhombohedral delafossite structures and examine the influence of chemical substitution on promoting the development of a quantum spin liquid state. We find good agreement with experiment regarding the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J 1 , but our calculations underestimate J 2 .

Transition between Heavy-Fermion-Strange-Metal and Quantum Spin Liquid in a $4⁢d$-Electron Trimer Lattice

We present experimental evidence that a heavy Fermi surface consisting of itinerant, charge-neutral spinons underpins both heavy-fermion-strange-metal (without f electrons) and quantum-spin-liquid states in the 4d-electron trimer lattice, Ba 4 Nb 1-x Ru 3+x O 12 (|x| < 0.20). These two exotic states both exhibit an extraordinarily large entropy, a linear heat capacity extending into the milli-Kelvin regime, a linear thermal conductivity at low temperatures, and separation of charges and spins. Furthermore, the insulating spin liquid is a much better thermal conductor than the heavy-fermion-strange-metal that separately is observed to strongly violate the Wiedemann- Franz law. Here, we propose that at the heart of this 4d system is a universal, heavy spinon Fermi surface that provides a unified framework for explaining the exotic phenomena observed throughout the entire series. The control of such exotic ground states provided by variable Nb concentration offers a new paradigm for studies of correlated quantum matter.

Electronic density of states of a U ( 1 ) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface. II. Zeeman magnetic field effects

The Zeeman effect lowers the energy of electrons with spin states which are antiparallel to the applied magnetic field but lifts that of spin parallel states. In quantum spin liquids where the spin and charge degrees of freedom are fractionalized, an anomalous Zeeman response may be expected. In the case of spin liquids with a spinon Fermi surface, the threshold energy to excite an electronic state is found to exhibit no Zeeman shift. This is specific to the spinon Fermi surface case. In contrast, other gapped spin liquids are expected to exhibit the standard Zeeman shift at the band edge even though they also exhibit spin-charge fractionalization. Further, when gauge-field fluctuations are included, we find that the Zeeman shift of the electronic states gets affected by the gauge field induced binding. In the electronic density of states spectra, weak gauge binding induces band-edge resonance peaks which exhibit the Zeeman shift in the same direction as that in the standard Zeeman effect, but the shift is reduced as the binding potential increases. With further increase in the binding potential, the resonance becomes true in-gap bound states and eventually the Zeeman shift direction reverses so it is opposite to the standard Zeeman effect. We propose that one can perform spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope measurements as a test of the spinon Fermi sea ground state in quantum spin liquid candidate materials.

Quantitative investigation of the short-range magnetic correlations in the candidate quantum spin liquid NaYbO 2

Here, we present a neutron diffraction study of NaYbO 2 , a candidate quantum spin-liquid (QSL) compound hosting a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice of magnetic Yb 3+ ions. We observe diffuse magnetic scattering that persists to at least 20 K, demonstrating the presence of short-range magnetic correlations in this system up to a relatively high-energy scale. Using a reverse Monte Carlo and magnetic pair distribution function analysis, we confirm the predominant antiferromagnetic nature of these correlations and show that the diffuse scattering data can be well described by noninteracting layers of Heisenberg or XY spins on the triangular lattice. We rule out Ising spins and short-range-ordered stripe or 120° phases as candidate ground states of NaYbO 2 . These results are consistent with a possible QSL ground state in NaYbO 2 and showcase the benefit of a combined reciprocal- and real-space analysis of materials with short-range magnetic correlations.

Phonon dynamics in quantum spin liquid and valence bond crystal states in the barlowite family of kagome magnets

The barlowite [Cu 4 ⁢(OD) 6⁢ FBr] family of materials is characterized by antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 kagome layers and are believed to host interesting ground states of quantum magnetism. Substituting the interlayer sites with zinc ions yields Zn-barlowite (Zn 𝑥 ⁢Cu 4−𝑥 ⁢(OD) 6 ⁢FBr, 𝑥 ≈ 0.80) which is a strong candidate to have a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. Experimentally distinguishing between valence bond crystal (VBC) and QSL states in the absence of magnetic ordering can prove challenging as both states exhibit similar average spin-spin correlations. Using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering with 1.4 meV energy resolution, we probe acoustic phonons in these structurally similar materials at various temperatures. Our measurements uncover robust differences possibly driven by different spin-phonon physics in VBC and QSL states, particularly at the 𝑀-point Brillouin zone boundary. Over a large 𝑇=[15,200]⁢ K temperature range, where neither material undergoes magnetic ordering nor a structural transition, we observe phonon softening in Zn-barlowite in contrast to a hardening of the same phonon in barlowite. Further, these results indicate that acoustic phonons in the barlowite system can be used to study and possibly distinguish between QSL and disordered VBC states in quantum magnets.

Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

The 3⁢d 7 Co 2+ -based insulating magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quandum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here, in this study, we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the a and a* axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along c. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements, we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find additional high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after any combination of magnetic/electric field cooling suggests that a zigzag spin structure is more likely than a triple-Q spin structure at zero field. Finally, we investigate the hysteresis and first- or second-order nature of each phase transition and its entropy changes. With this information, we establish a map of the magnetic phases of this compound and its magnetic, thermodynamic, and magnetoelectric properties, and discuss where spin liquid or other phases may be sought in future studies.
