Bridging hadronic and vacuum structure by heavy quarkonia

We discuss the central and, mostly, spin-dependent potentials in heavy quarkonia $\overline{b}$$b$,$\overline{c}$$c$, with two goals in mind. The first is phenomenological: using the splitting between the 1S and 2S pairs, as well as the 1P and 2P quartet masses, we obtain pertinent matrix elements of all these potentials. The second is theoretical: using standard wave functions, we compute these matrix elements, quantifying the perturbative, nonperturbative and “string” contributions. The model for nonperturbative effects is a “dense instanton liquid model,” in which the QCD vacuum is made mostly of (strongly color correlated) instanton-anti-instanton pairs or “molecules.” Their contributions are calculated via standard Wilson lines, with or without extra powers of gauge fields. We find a reasonable description of all central, spin-spin, and spin-orbit forces at distances 𝑟 = 0–0.7 fm, relevant for $\overline{b}$$b$ and $\overline{c}$$c$ quarkonia.

Quarkonium Polarization Kinetic Equation from Open Quantum Systems and Effective Field Theories

Recent measurements of polarization phenomena in relativistic heavy ion collisions have aroused a great interest in understanding dynamical spin evolution of the QCD matter. In particular, the spin alignment signature of J/ψ has been recently observed in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC, which may infer nontrivial spin transport of quarkonia in quark gluon plasmas. Motivated by this, we study the spin-dependent in-medium dynamics of quarkonia by using the potential nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD) and the open quantum system framework. By applying the Markovian approximation and Wigner transformation, we systematically derive the Boltzmann transport equation for vector quarkonia with polarization dependence in the quantum optical limit. As opposed to the previous study for the spin-independent case where the collision terms depend on chromoelectric correlators, the new kinetic equation incorporates gauge invariant correlators of chromomagnetic fields that determine the recombination and dissociation terms with polarization dependence at the order we are working in the multipole expansion. In the quantum Brownian motion limit, the Lindblad equation with new transport coefficients defined in terms of the chromomagnetic field correlators have also been derived. Our formalism is generic and valid for both weakly-coupled and strongly-coupled quark gluon plasmas. It may be further applied to study spin alignment of vector quarkonia in heavy ion collisions.

Non-perturbative quarkonium dissociation rates in strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma

Heavy quarks and quarkonia are versatile probes of the transport properties of the hot QCD medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions (URHICs). A robust description of heavy-flavor transport coefficients requires a microscopic approach that treats the open and hidden heavy-flavor sectors on the same footing. Here, we employ the quantum many-body T -matrix formalism to evaluate the dissociation rates of heavy quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The basic ingredient is the heavy-light T -matrix, which utilizes a nonperturbative driving kernel constrained by lattice-QCD data. Its resummation in a ladder series provides a much enhanced interaction strength compared to a previously used perturbative coupling to the quasiparticle partons in the QGP. The in-medium quarkonium properties, particularly their temperature-dependent binding energies, are obtained from selfconsistent calculations with the same interaction kernel, including interference effects (also referred to as the imaginary part of the heavy-quark potential) as well as off-shell parton spectral functions. We systematically investigate the interplay of these effects and elaborate on the connections to the dipole approximation used in effective field theory.

Quarkonium suppression in strongly coupled plasmas

Suppression of open heavy quarks and quarkonia in heavy-ion collisions are among the most informative probes of quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Interpreting the full wealth of data obtained from the collision events requires a precise theoretical understanding of the evolution of heavy quarks and quarkonia as they propagate through a strongly coupled plasma. Such calculations require the evaluation of a gauge-invariant correlator of chromoelectric fields. This chromoelectric correlator encodes all the characteristics of QGP that the dissociation and recombination dynamics of quarkonium are sensitive to, which is to say can in principle measure. We review its distinctive qualitative features at weak coupling in QCD up to next-to-leading order and at strong coupling in N = 4 SYM using the AdS/CFT correspondence, as well as its formulation in Euclidean QCD. Furthermore, we report on recent progress in applying our results to the calculation of the final quarkonium abundances after propagating through a cooling droplet of QGP, which illustrates how we may learn about QGP from quarkonium measurements. We devote special attention to how the presence of a strongly coupled plasma modifies the transport description of quarkonium, in comparison to approaches that rely on weak coupling approximations to describe quarkonium dissociation and recombination.

Quarkonium Spectroscopy in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

The properties of bound states are fundamental to hadronic spectroscopy and play a central role in the transition from hadronic matter to a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In a strongly coupled QGP (sQGP), the interplay of temperature, binding energy, and large collisional widths of the partons poses formidable challenges in evaluating the in-medium properties of hadronic states and their eventual melting. In particular, the existence of heavy quarkonia in the QGP is a long-standing problem that is hard to solve by considering their spectral properties on the real-energy axis. Here, we address this problem by analyzing in-medium thermodynamic quarkonium 𝑇 matrices in the complex energy plane. We first validate this method in vacuum, where the 𝑇-matrix poles of observed states are readily identified. When deploying this approach to recent self-consistently calculated 𝑇 matrices in the QGP, we find that poles in the complex energy plane can persist to surprisingly large temperatures, depending on the strength of the in-medium interactions. While the masses and widths of the pole positions are precisely defined, the notion of a binding energy is not due to the absence of thresholds caused by the (large) widths of the underlying quark or anti-quark spectral functions. Our method thus provides a new and definitive quantum-mechanical criterion to determine the melting temperature of hadronic states in the sQGP while increasing the accuracy in the theoretical determination of transport parameters.

Overview of recent results from the STAR experiment

We highlight the STAR experiment’s recent measurements on electromagnetic and hard probes of nuclear collisions, which inform the field’s understanding of these physical phenomena and by extension QCD. Results on vector meson production from the high electromagnetic fields in glancing heavy-ion collisions are presented. Observables related to jets, high-momentum hadrons, heavy quarks and quarkonia in vacuum and their modification in head-on heavy-ion collisions are also presented. Studies using electromagnetic probes of the medium created in these collisions are presented as well. Finally, we conclude and give an outlook for STAR data-taking and measurements in the coming years.

Measurements of ϒ states production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV with STAR: Cross sections, ratios, and multiplicity dependence

We report measurements of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆), ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) and ϒ⁡(3⁢𝑆) production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =500 GeV by the STAR experiment in year 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity ℒ int = 13 pb −1 . The results provide precise cross sections, transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) spectra, as well as cross section ratios for 𝑝 T < 10 GeV/c and |𝑦| < 1. The dependence of the ϒ yield on charged particle multiplicity has also been measured, offering new insights into the mechanisms of quarkonium production. The data are compared to various theoretical models: the color evaporation model (CEM) accurately describes the ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) production, while the color glass condensate+nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (CGC+NRQCD) model overestimates the data, particularly at low 𝑝 T . Conversely, the color singlet model (CSM) underestimates the rapidity dependence. These discrepancies highlight the need for further development in understanding the production dynamics of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The trend in the multiplicity dependence is consistent with CGC/saturation and string percolation models or ϒ production happening in multiple parton interactions modeled by PYTHIA 8.

Gluon Sivers function from forward exclusive χ c 1 photoproduction on unpolarized protons

Exclusive production of a χ c 1 axial vector quarkonia in photon-proton scattering at high energies requires a C -odd t -channel exchange. In the limit of vanishing momentum transfer this occurs either via the exchange of a photon, the Primakoff process, where the spin of the proton does not change. For axial-vector meson production, as a consequence of the Landau-Yang theorem, the Primakoff cross section is finite as t → 0 . Alternatively, a C -odd spin dependent Odderon can be exchanged, which involves a spin flip of the proton. The resulting cross section is related to the square of the collinear trigluon correlator or the k ⊥ -moment of the gluon Sivers function. Using two models for the gluon Sivers function from the literature we compute the ratio of Sivers to Primakoff cross sections and the angular coefficient λ θ governing the angular distribution of the χ c 1 → J / ψ + γ decay as functions of x . We point out that these observables constrain the magnitude of the gluon Sivers function at small x which could be accessed in electron-proton scattering and ultraperipheral proton-proton and nucleus-proton collisions. Off forward non- s -channel helicity conserving contributions to exclusive vector quarkonium production from the spin dependent BFKL Pomeron

A novel contribution to off forward, exclusive vector quarkonium production, γ(*)+p → V+p, at high energy is derived which corresponds to a t-channel exchange of a Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) hard Pomeron, with a helicity flip of the proton. This “spin-dependent BFKL Pomeron” is required in a consistent expansion in powers of the momentum transfer t ≈−Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$ beyond first order. The spin-dependent Pomeron violates s-channel helicity conservation at O(Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$), and beyond. Expanding to leading twist only, it corresponds to generalized parton distributions E g (x,t) for vanishing skewness. We derive explicit expressions for the eikonal BFKL amplitudes, to all orders in dipole size times momentum transfer, for all helicity configurations of the particles in the initial and final states. We also provide numerical estimates of the helicity flip two gluon exchange amplitude at moderate x from a light cone quark model of the proton. The spin dependent BFKL Pomeron could, in principle, be discovered via double spin asymmetries in e+p → e+p+J/ψ with a transversely polarized proton and longitudinally polarized electron in the initial state.

Observation of the Charged-Particle Multiplicity Dependence of 𝜎 𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆 )/𝜎 𝐽/𝜓 in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at 8.16 TeV

Bound states of charm and anticharm quarks, known as charmonia, have a rich spectroscopic structure that can be used to probe the dynamics of hadron production in high-energy hadron collisions. Here, the cross section ratio of excited (𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆)) and ground state (𝐽/𝜓) vector mesons is measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-lead (𝑝⁢Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass (CM) energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb −1 were collected using the CMS detector. The ratio is measured separately for prompt and nonprompt charmonia in the transverse momentum range 6.5 < 𝑝 T < 30 GeV and in four rapidity ranges spanning −2.865 < 𝑦 CM < 1.935. For the first time, a statistically significant multiplicity dependence of the prompt cross section ratio is observed in proton-nucleus collisions. There is no clear rapidity dependence in the ratio. The prompt measurements are compared with a theoretical model which includes interactions with nearby particles during the evolution of the system. These results provide additional constraints on hadronization models of heavy quarks in nuclear collisions.

𝜂 and 𝜂′ meson production in 𝐽/𝜓 radiative decays from lattice QCD

We report on the computation of amplitudes describing the radiative decay processes 𝐽/𝜓 →𝛾⁢𝜂 and 𝐽/𝜓 →𝛾⁢𝜂′ from first principles via lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Using lattices with two heavier than physical degenerate flavors of light quark where 𝑚 𝜋 ∼391 MeV, and a strange quark tuned to approximately the physical value, we compute three-point correlation functions using optimized meson operators with a range of momenta. The use of optimized operators allows access to the 𝜂′, even though it appears as an excited state, lying above the ground-state 𝜂 in the isoscalar pseudoscalar channel. Statistically precise signals are obtained in this disconnected process by averaging over large numbers of kinematically equivalent correlators. We determine transition form factors as a function of photon virtuality across the timelike region, which describe also the Dalitz processes 𝐽/𝜓 →𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − ⁢𝜂 (′) . Significantly lower magnitudes of transition form factor for both the 𝜂 and 𝜂′ are found than those extracted from experimental data, and possible explanations for this observation are presented.

Azimuthal angular correlation of J/ψ plus jet production at the electron-ion collider

By investigating the soft gluon radiation in the J/ψ plus jet photoproduction at the electron-ion collider (EIC), we demonstrate that the azimuthal angular correlations between the leading jet and heavy quarkonium provide a unique probe to the production mechanism of the latter. In particular, a significant cos⁡(φ) asymmetry is found for the color-singlet channel, whereas it vanishes or has an opposite sign for color-octet production, depending on the jet transverse momentum. Numerical results of cos⁡(φ) and cos⁡(2⁢φ) asymmetries employing both the color-singlet model and the nonrelativistic QCD approach are presented for typical kinematics at the future EIC.

3 𝑃 0 model revisited

We revisit the phenomenological 3 𝑃 0 model for the decay of quarkonium ($Q\bar{Q}$) into two open flavor mesons ($\bar{𝔐}⁢𝔐$). We take the heavy-quark limit and derive a transition rate between $Q\bar{Q}$ and $\bar{𝔐}⁢𝔐$ to be compared with the one calculated in studies of string breaking using lattice QCD. This comparison allows us to fit the creation amplitude of a light quark-antiquark pair in the 3 𝑃 0 model to the string-breaking transition rate in QCD.

Probing Gluon Fluctuations in Nuclei with the First Energy-Dependent Measurement of Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral PbPb Collisions

Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction in heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) provides a sensitive probe of localized, fluctuating gluonic structures within heavy nuclei. This Letter reports the first measurement of the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy (𝑊 𝛾⁢N ) dependence of this process in PbPb UPCs at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, using 1.52 nb −1 of data recorded by the CMS experiment. The measurement covers a wide 𝑊 𝛾⁢N range of ≈40–400 GeV, probing gluons carrying a fraction 𝑥 of nucleon momentum down to an unexplored regime of 6.5 ×10 −5 . Compared to baseline predictions neglecting nuclear effects, the measured cross sections exhibit significantly greater suppression at lower 𝑥. Additionally, the ratio of incoherent to coherent photoproduction is found to be constant across the probed 𝑊 𝛾⁢N and 𝑥 range, disfavoring the establishment of the black disk limit. This Letter provides critical insights into the 𝑥-dependent evolution of fluctuating gluonic structures within nuclei and calls for further advancements in theoretical models incorporating nuclear shadowing and gluon saturation.
