Quarkonium semiclassical transport in quark-gluon plasma: factorization and quantum correction

We study quarkonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma by using the potential nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD) effective field theory and the framework of open quantum systems. We argue that the coupling between quarkonium and the thermal bath is weak using separation of scales, so the initial density matrix of the total system factorizes and the time evolution of the subsystem is Markovian. We derive the semiclassical Boltzmann equation for quarkonium by applying a Wigner transform to the Lindblad equation and carrying out a semiclassical expansion. We resum relevant interactions to all orders in the coupling constant at leading power of the nonrelativistic and multipole expansions. The derivation is valid for both weakly coupled and strongly coupled quark-gluon plasmas. We find reaction rates in the transport equation factorize into a quarkonium dipole transition function and a chromoelectric gluon distribution function. For the differential reaction rate, the definition of the momentum dependent chromoelectric gluon distribution function involves staple-shaped Wilson lines. For the inclusive reaction rate, the Wilson lines collapse into a straight line along the real time axis and the distribution becomes momentum independent. The relation between the two Wilson lines is analogous to the relation between the Wilson lines appearing in the gluon parton distribution function (PDF) and the gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function (TMDPDF). The centrality dependence of the quarkonium nuclear modification factor measured by experiments probes the momentum independent distribution while the transverse momentum dependence and measurements of the azimuthal angular anisotropy may be able to probe the momentum dependent one. We discuss one way to indirectly constrain the quarkonium in-medium real potential by using the factorization formula and lattice calculations. The leading quantum correction to the semiclassical transport equation of quarkonium is also worked out. The study can be easily generalized to quarkonium transport in cold nuclear matter, which is relevant for quarkonium production in eA collisions in the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Quarkonium suppression in strongly coupled plasmas

Suppression of open heavy quarks and quarkonia in heavy-ion collisions are among the most informative probes of quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Interpreting the full wealth of data obtained from the collision events requires a precise theoretical understanding of the evolution of heavy quarks and quarkonia as they propagate through a strongly coupled plasma. Such calculations require the evaluation of a gauge-invariant correlator of chromoelectric fields. This chromoelectric correlator encodes all the characteristics of QGP that the dissociation and recombination dynamics of quarkonium are sensitive to, which is to say can in principle measure. We review its distinctive qualitative features at weak coupling in QCD up to next-to-leading order and at strong coupling in N = 4 SYM using the AdS/CFT correspondence, as well as its formulation in Euclidean QCD. Furthermore, we report on recent progress in applying our results to the calculation of the final quarkonium abundances after propagating through a cooling droplet of QGP, which illustrates how we may learn about QGP from quarkonium measurements. We devote special attention to how the presence of a strongly coupled plasma modifies the transport description of quarkonium, in comparison to approaches that rely on weak coupling approximations to describe quarkonium dissociation and recombination.

Direct quarkonium-plus-gluon production in DIS in the color glass condensate

We compute the differential cross-section for direct quarkonium production accompanied by a gluon in high-energy deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small- x . We employ the Non-Relativistic QCD factorization framework, focusing on the S -wave contribution to the formation of the quarkonium, and including both color singlet and octet contributions. Our short distance coefficients for the production of the heavy quark pair are obtained within the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. Our results pave the way towards the next-to-leading order computation of direct quarkonium in DIS, as well as the study of azimuthal correlations of direct quarkonium and jet.

Generalized gluon distribution for quarkonium dynamics in strongly coupled N = 4 Yang-Mills theory

We study the generalized gluon distribution that governs the dynamics of quarkonium inside a non-Abelian thermal plasma characterizing its dissociation and recombination rates. This gluon distribution can be written in terms of a correlation function of two chromoelectric fields connected by an adjoint Wilson line. We formulate and calculate this object in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling using the AdS/CFT correspondence, allowing for a nonzero center-of-mass velocity v of the heavy quark pair relative to the medium. The effect of a moving medium on the dynamics of the heavy quark pair is described by the simple substitution T → γ T in agreement with previous calculations of other observables at strong coupling, where T is the temperature of the plasma in its rest frame, and γ = ( 1 − v 2 ) − 1 / 2 is the Lorentz boost factor. Such a velocity dependence can be important when the quarkonium momentum is larger than its mass. Contrary to general expectations for open quantum systems weakly coupled with large thermal environments, the contributions to the transition rates that are usually thought of as the leading ones in Markovian descriptions vanish in this strongly coupled plasma. This calls for new theoretical developments to assess the effects of strongly coupled non-Abelian plasmas on in-medium quarkonium dynamics. Finally, we compare our results with those from weakly coupled QCD, and find that the QCD result moves toward the N = 4 strongly coupled result as the coupling constant is increased within the regime of applicability of perturbation theory. This behavior makes it even more pressing to develop a non-Markovian description of quarkonium in-medium dynamics. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Subleading power corrections to heavy quarkonium production in QCD factorization approach

We report the current understanding of heavy quarkonium production at high transverse momentum ($p_T$) in hadronic collisions in terms of QCD factorization. In this presentation, we highlight the role of subleading power corrections to heavy quarkonium production, which are essential to describe the $p_T$ spectrum of quarkonium at a relatively lower $p_T$. We also introduce prescription to match QCD factorization to fixed-order NRQCD factorization calculations for quarkonium production at low $p_T$.

Quarkonium transport in weakly and strongly coupled plasmas

We report on progress in the nonperturbative understanding of quarkonium dynamics inside a thermal plasma. The time evolution of small-size quarkonium is governed by two-point correlation functions of chromoelectric fields dressed with an adjoint Wilson line, known in this context as generalized gluon distributions (GGDs). The GGDs have been calculated in both weakly and strongly coupled plasmas by using perturbative and holographic methods. Strikingly, the results of our calculations for a strongly coupled plasma indicate that the quarkonium dissociation and recombination rates vanish in the transport descriptions that assume quarkonium undergoes Markovian dynamics. However, this does not imply that the dynamics is trivial. As a starting point to explore the phenomenological consequences of the result at strong coupling, we show a calculation of the Y(1 S ) formation probability in time-dependent perturbation theory. This is a first step towards the development of a transport formalism that includes non-Markovian effects, which, depending on how close the as of yet undetermined nonperturbative QCD result of the GGDs is to the strongly coupled N = 4 SYM result, could very well dominate over the Markovian ones in quark-gluon plasma produced at RHIC and the LHC.

Overview of quarkonium production studies at the STAR experiment

Quarkonium states can be used to study the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. However, Cold Nuclear Matter (CNM) effects need to be taken into account when interpreting the quarkonium suppression observed in these collisions. In addition, the quarkonium production mechanism in elementary collisions need to be better understood. These proceedings contains an overview of recent quarkonium measurements with the STAR experiment. A comprehensive study of both J/ψ and Υ production is performed in different colliding systems (p+p, p+Au, Au+Au).

A Challenge for Discrimination of Color-Singlet versus Color-Octet Quarkonium Production

The precise mechanism for production of quarkonium at hadron colliders is still an open question. Within non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, quarkonium production cross sections can be factorized into short-distance, perturbative contributions and universal, non-perturbative, long-distance matrix elements, and then summed over quantum numbers of the heavy quark pair. In principle, at short-distances, the heavy quark pair can be either in a color-singlet or color-octet state, and it is desirable to establish the relative contributions to compare with data and to make predictions in different experimental environments. From the explicit form of the lowest-order perturbative matrix elements for color-singlet and color-octet production, we show that the structure of the optimal observable for discrimination on phase space, the likelihood ratio, has strong dependence on the angular momentum state of the heavy quark pair. This presents an obstruction for construction of a single, robust discrimination observable that can be applied to production of an arbitrary quarkonium state.

Chromoelectric field correlator for quarkonium transport in the strongly coupled $ \mathcal{N}$ = 4 Yang-Mills plasma from AdS/CFT

Previous studies have shown that a gauge-invariant correlation function of two chromoelectric fields connected by a straight timelike adjoint Wilson line encodes crucial information about quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that determines the dynamics of small-sized quarkonium in the medium. Motivated by the successes of holographic calculations to describe strongly coupled QGP, we calculate the analog gauge-invariant correlation function in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results indicate that the transition processes between bound and unbound quarkonium states are suppressed in strongly coupled plasmas, and moreover, the leading contributions to these transition processes vanish in both the quantum Brownian motion and quantum optical limits of open quantum system approaches to quarkonia

QTRAJ 1.0: A Lindblad equation solver for heavy-quarkonium dynamics

Here we introduce an open-source package called QTraj that solves the Lindblad equation for heavy-quarkonium dynamics using the quantum trajectories algorithm. The package allows users to simulate the suppression of heavy-quarkonium states using externally-supplied input from 3+1D hydrodynamics simulations. The code uses a split-step pseudo-spectral method for updating the wave-function between jumps, which is implemented using the open-source multi-threaded FFTW3 package. This allows one to have manifestly unitary evolution when using real-valued potentials. In this paper, we provide detailed documentation of QTraj 1.0, installation instructions, and present various tests and benchmarks of the code.

Prospects for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC

In this work, prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/ψ and Υ produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) χ c,b and η c,b down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

Recent Measurements of Heavy Quarkonium Production in Au+Au, p+Au and p+p Collisions at STAR

Heavy quarkonia are useful probes of the quark-gluon plasma, where quarkonium dissociation is expected at high enough temperature. Indeed, such a suppression is clearly present in the latest STAR measurements of J/ψ production in Au+Au collisions. The suppression is observed to have little dependence on p T , although cold-nuclear matter (CNM) effects, such as shadowing, anti-shadowing and nuclear absorption can play a significant role at low p T . Measurements of the J/ψ production in p+A collisions can help us to disentangle the CNM effects from the hot medium effects in A+A collisions. In these proceedings, we will present the measurement of J/ψ production in p+Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. In addition, we will present recent STAR measurements of J/ψ and Υ production in p+p collisions including their dependence on the charged-particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity. Furthermore, these measurements are important for understanding the mechanism of the heavy quarkonium production in elementary nucleon-nucleon collisions and the interplay of soft and hard processes.

Lattice study of correlators of chromoelectric fields for heavy quarkonium dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma

We perform a lattice calculation of the correlators of two chromoelectric fields in the adjoint representation connected by adjoint Wilson lines at nonzero temperature. These correlators arise in the study of quarkonium dynamics and of adjoint heavy quark diffusion in deconfined matter. We work in SU(3) gauge theory using either gradient flow or multilevel algorithms for noise reduction, and discuss the renormalization of the correlators on the lattice. We find that a Casimir factor rescaling relates the adjoint correlators corresponding to the diffusion of an adjoint heavy quark and the octet-octet quarkonium transitions to the chromoelectric correlator in the fundamental representation describing the diffusion of a heavy quark.

Quantum computing for heavy quarkonium spectroscopy

Here, we report a first demonstration for the application of quantum computing to heavy quarkonium spectroscopy study. Based on a Cornell-potential model for the heavy quark and antiquark system, we show how this Hamiltonian problem can be formulated and solved with the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) approach on the IBM cloud quantum computing platform. Errors due to a global depolarizing noise channel are corrected with a zero-noise extrapolation method, resulting in good agreement with the expected value. We also generalize the VQE method for solving excited states by orthogonalization with respect to the ground state. This new approach is demonstrated to be successful for the quarkonium system on a noiseless quantum simulator and can easily be adapted for solving similar excited state problems in many other physical systems.

Why quarkonium hybrid coupling to two $S$-wave heavy-light mesons is not suppressed

We examine the couplings of quarkonium hybrids to heavy-light meson pairs in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for QCD. The lowest hybrid multiplets consist of bound states of the Π u and Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potentials. We find that the Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potential can couple to pairs of S-wave mesons through string breaking, while the Π u potential cannot. From this observation, we derive model-independent selection rules that contradict previous expectations that quarkonium hybrids are forbidden to decay into pairs of S-wave mesons. These Born-Oppenheimer selection rules are consistent with the partial decay widths of the lowest charmonium hybrid with exotic quantum numbers J PC = 1 -+ recently calculated using lattice QCD.

Inclusive quarkonium production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

This article reports on the inclusive production cross section of several quarkonium states, J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(2S), and $\mathcal{Υ}$(3S), measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV. The analysis is performed in the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4). The integrated cross sections and transverse-momentum (p T ) and rapidity (y) differential cross sections for J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), and the ψ(2S) -to-J/ψ cross section ratios are presented. The integrated cross sections, assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are: σ J/ψ (p T <20 GeV/c) = 5.88 ± 0.03 ± 0.34 μb, σ ψ(2S) (p T <12 GeV/c) = 0.87 ± 0.06 ± 0.10 μb, σ Υ(1S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 45.5 ± 3.9 ± 3.5 nb, σ Υ(2S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 22.4 ± 3.2 ± 2.7 nb, and σ Υ(3S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 4.9 ± 2.2 ± 1.0 nb, where the first (second) uncertainty is the statistical (systematic) one. For the first time, the cross sections of the three $\mathcal{Υ}$ states, as well as the ψ(2S) one as a function of p T and y , are measured at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV at forward rapidity. These measurements also significantly extend the J/ψ p T reach and supersede previously published results. A comparison with ALICE measurements in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV is presented and the energy dependence of quarkonium production cross sections is discussed. Finally, the results are compared with the predictions from several production models.

QCD factorization for hadronic quarkonium production at high $p_T$

Heavy quarkonium production at high transverse momentum ( p_T p T ) in hadronic collisions is explored in the QCD factorization approach. We find that the leading power in the 1/p_T 1 / p T expansion is responsible for high p_T p T regime, while the next-to-leading power contribution is necessary for the low p_T p T region. We present the first numerical analysis of the scale evolution of coupled twist-2 and twist-4 fragmentation functions (FFs) for heavy quarkonium production and demonstrate that the QCD factorization approach is capable of describing the p_T p T spectrum of hadronic J/\psi J / ψ production at the LHC.
