Simulating Charm Quarks in IP-Glasma Initial Stage and Quark-Gluon Plasma: A Hybrid Approach for charm quark phenomenology

We present phenomenological findings on charm quark transport while including its energy loss in both pre-equilibrium and hydrodynamic stages of the evolution. We employed the MARTINI event generator for the production and evolution of heavy quarks in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The sensitivity of the heavy meson nuclear modification factor and flow coeffcient to the early stage of heavy-ion collisions and bulk medium evolution is analyzed for Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV. Our study provides insights into the interaction strength of charm quarks during the early phase and within the quark-gluon plasma.

Search for single production of a vector-like T quark decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson in the lepton+jets final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for single production of a vector-like T quark with charge 2e/3, decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson is presented. The boson can be a standard model Higgs boson (H) or a new scalar boson (ϕ). In the first case, a branching fraction of 25% is assumed for the decay T → tH, while in the second case the T quark is assumed to decay exclusively to tϕ. The top quark is identified via its lepton+jets decay, and the neutral boson via its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair. Final states with Lorentz-boosted topologies are considered and machine-learning techniques are exploited for optimal event classification. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction for a T quark in a narrow-width approximation. They vary between 14.7 and 0.1 fb, for T quark masses in the range 1.3–3.0 TeV and ϕ boson masses in the range 25–250 GeV. These are the first exclusion limits set on the production of a single T quark decaying into a top quark and a new neutral scalar boson. For the decay channel into a top quark and a standard model Higgs boson, the results provide the best limits on production cross sections to date, for T quark masses above 2 TeV.

Measurement of the top quark mass with the ATLAS detector using $t\bar{t}$ events with a high transverse momentum top quark

Journal article. The mass of the top quark is measured using top-quark-top-antiquark pair events with high transverse momentum top quarks. The dataset, collected with the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . The analysis targets events in the lepton-plus-jets decay channel, with an electron or muon from a semi-leptonically decaying top quark and a hadronically decaying top quark that is sufficiently energetic to be reconstructed as a single large-radius jet. The mean of the invariant mass of the reconstructed large-radius jet provides the sensitivity to the top quark mass and is simultaneously fitted with two additional observables to reduce the impact of the systematic uncertainties. The top quark mass is measured to be m t = 172.95 ± 0.53 GeV, which is the most precise ATLAS measurement from a single channel.

A new effective field theory for heavy quarks in the quark-gluon plasma

A bstract An effective field theory framework is developed to study the interaction of heavy quarks in strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The latter is treated as a relativistic non-dissipative colorless fluid which can be studied using a derivatively coupled effective field theory based on previous work. Coupling this to heavy quarks provides a systematic way to obtain the interaction between the heavy quark and phonons, excitations of the fluid. In particular we calculate the quasiparticle width of heavy quark to phonon and phonon-heavy quark scattering in a thermal medium.

Search for charged-lepton flavour violation in top quark interactions with an up-type quark, a muon, and a $τ$ lepton in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for charged-lepton flavour violation (CLFV) in top quark (t) production and decay is presented. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to 138 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The signal consists of the production of a single top quark via a CLFV interaction or top quark pair production followed by a CLFV decay. The analysis selects events containing a hadronically decaying $τ$ lepton and a muon of opposite electric charge, as well as at least three jets, one of which is identified as originating from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. Machine learning classification techniques are used to distinguish signal from standard model background events. The results of this search are consistent with the standard model expectations. The upper limits at 95% confidence level on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$ for CLFV top quark decays to a muon, a $τ$ lepton, and an up or a charm quark are set at $\mathcal{B}$(t $\to$ $μτ$u) $\lt$ (0.04, 0.08, and 0.12) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$, and $\mathcal{B}$(t $\to$ $μτ$c) $\lt$ (0.81, 1.71, and 2.05) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ for scalar, vector, and tensor-like operators, respectively.

Quark flavor equilibration of the quark-gluon plasma

The early stage of a heavy-ion collision is marked by rapid entropy production and the transition from a gluon saturated initial condition to a plasma of quarks and gluons that evolves hydrodynamically. However, during the early times of the hydrodynamic evolution, the chemical composition of the QCD medium is still largely unknown. We present a study of quark chemical equilibration in the (Q)GP using a novel model of viscous hydrodynamic evolution in partial chemical equilibrium. Motivated by the success of gluon saturated initial condition models, we initialize the QCD medium as a completely gluon dominated state. Local quark production during the hydrodynamic phase is then simulated through the evolution of time-dependent fugacities for each independent quark flavor, with the timescales set as free parameters to compare different rates of equilibration. We present the results of complete heavy-ion collision simulations using this partial chemical equilibrium model, and show the effects on hadronic and electromagnetic observables. In particular, we show that the development of flow is sensitive to the equilibration timescale, providing an empirical way to probe the chemical equilibration of the QCD medium.

Helicity evolution at small x : quark to gluon and gluon to quark transition operators

We include the quark to gluon and gluon to quark shock-wave transition operators into the small Bjorken-x evolution equations for helicity in the flavor-singlet channel derived earlier in [1,2,3]. While such transitions do not affect the large-N c version of the evolution equations for helicity, the large-N c & N f equations are affected. (N c and N f are the numbers of quark colors and flavors, respectively.) We derive the corresponding corrected large-N c & N f equations for the polarized dipole amplitudes contributing to the flavor-singlet quark and gluon helicity distributions in the double-logarithmic approximation (DLA), resumming powers of α s ln 2 (1/x) with αs the strong coupling constant. We solve these equations iteratively and extract the polarized splitting functions up to four loops. We show that our splitting functions agree with the fixed-order perturbative calculations up to and including the existing three-loops results [4,5,6,7]. Similar to the large-Nc helicity evolution in the shock-wave approach [8], our large-N c & N f small-x splitting functions agree with those obtained in the infrared evolution equations framework from [9, 10] up to three loops, but appear to slightly disagree at four loops.

$B\rightarrow D^{(*)}$ decays from $N_f=2+1+1$ highly improved staggered quarks and clover $b$-quark in the Fermilab interpretation

We present an update on the analysis of semileptonic $B\rightarrow D^{(*)}$ decays at non-zero recoil. Our computation employs $2 + 1 + 1$ FNAL-MILC ensembles with highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for sea and light valence quarks, while the bottom quark is treated using the clover action in the Fermilab interpretation. Simulations are performed across several lattice spacings, ranging approximately from $\sim 0.15$ fm to $\sim 0.06$ fm, and for various quark masses. We will present an overview of the analysis and show some preliminary results for the form factors.

Search for charged Higgs bosons produced in top-quark decays or in association with top quarks and decaying via H±→τ±ντ in 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

Charged Higgs bosons produced either in top-quark decays or in association with a top quark, subsequently decaying via , are searched for in of proton-proton collision data at recorded with the ATLAS detector. Depending on whether the top quark is produced together with the decays hadronically or semileptonically, the search targets or final states, in both cases with a -lepton decaying into a neutrino and hadrons. No significant excess over the Standard Model background expectation is observed. For the mass range of , upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of the charged Higgs boson times the branching fraction in the range 4.5 pb–0.4 fb. In the mass range 80–160 GeV, assuming the Standard Model cross section for production, this corresponds to upper limits between 0.27% and 0.02% on .

Measurement of top-quark pair production in association with charm quarks in proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Inclusive cross-sections or top-quark pair production in association with charm quarks are measured with proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 , collected with the ATLAS experiment at LHC between 2015 and 2018. The measurements are performed by requiring one or two charged leptons (electrons and muons), two b-tagged jets, and at least one additional jet in the final state. A custom flavor-tagging algorithm is employed for the simultaneous identification of b-jets and c-jets. In a fiducial phase space that replicates the acceptance of the ATLAS detector, the cross-sections for $t\bar{t}$ + ≥ 2c and $t\bar{t}$ + 1c production are measured to be $1.28^{+0.27}_{-0.24}$ pb and $6.4^{+1.0}_{-0.9}$ pb, respectively. The measurements are primarily limited by uncertainties in the modeling of inclusive $t\bar{t}$ and $t\bar{t}$ + $b\bar{b}$ production, in the calibration of the flavor-tagging algorithm, and by data statistics. Cross-section predictions from various $t\bar{t}$ simulations are largely consistent with the measured cross-section values, though all underpredict the observed values by 0.5 to 2.0 standard deviations. In a phase-space volume without requirements on the $t\bar{t}$ decay products and the jet multiplicity, the cross-section ratios of $t\bar{t}$ + ≥ 2c and $t\bar{t}$ + 1c to total $t\bar{t}$ + jets production are determined to be (1.23 ± 0.25)% and (8.8 ± 1.3)%.

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in $γ$ SIDIS as a direct probe of quark-gluon-quark longitudinal momentum structure

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic production of isolated photons ($\gamma$SIDIS), $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$, provide an unprecedented opportunity to extract the quark-gluon-quark correlators $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ point-by-point in their full support $x,x'$. We utilize realistic models for these functions, based on input from the Sivers transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function and imposing constraints from the $d_2$ matrix element calculated in lattice QCD, in order to provide numerical estimates for $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We thoroughly explore the EIC phase space in order to isolate in which regions the asymmetry can be sizable, finding it can be as much as $10\%$ or larger for certain kinematics. Given that $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ are basically unknown, $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ will be an important future measurement to learn about multi-parton correlations in the nucleon.

Search for pair-produced vectorlike quarks coupling to light quarks in the lepton plus jets final state using 13 TeV p p collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks (VLQs) that each decay into a W boson and a light quark. This study focuses on events where one W boson decays into leptons and the other into hadrons. The search analyzed 140 fb -1 of pp collision data with $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 during run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The final state is characterized by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, multiple small-radius jets, and a single large-radius jet identified as originating from the hadronic decay of a boosted W boson. With higher center-of-mass energy and integrated luminosity than in the run 1 search, and improved analysis tools, this analysis excludes VLQs (Q) with masses below 1530 GeV at 95% confidence level for the branching ratio $\mathscr{B}$⁡(Q →W⁢q) =1, an improvement of 840 GeV on the previous ATLAS limit.

Quark and Gluon Relaxation in Quark-Gluon Plasmas

The quasiparticle decay rates for quarks and gluons in quark-gluon plasmas are calculated by solving the kinetic equation. Introducing an infrared cutoff to allow for nonperturbative effects, we evaluate the quasiparticle lifetime at momenta greater than the inverse Debye screening length to leading order in the coupling constant.

Locality in collider tests of quantum mechanics with top quark pairs

Tests of quantum properties of fundamental particles in high energy colliders are starting to appear. Entanglement and Bell inequality violation in top and antitop quark system is of particular interest since top quarks are unstable particles that undergo a cascade decay. We argue for criteria for the spacelike separation between top and antitop quarks at their different decay stages. We considered causal separation at three different instances: at the top quark decay, at the 𝑊 boson decay, and at the lepton/jet contact with the macroscopic apparatus. We showed that the spacelike fraction of events is the smallest, when requiring that both top quarks and 𝑊 bosons decay within the spacelike interval. For high invariant masses, typically required for the Bell inequality violation, this is almost identical to just the top quark decay requirement. We also include an option for the angular correlation of the 𝑏 quarks from top quark decay to be used for the spin correlation measurement. We require that both top quark and 𝑏 hadron decays are spacelike separated. Again, we find that at high invariant masses it is almost identical to just the requirement of spacelike separation between top and antitop quarks. We provide numerical values for our proposed criteria. If such a criterion is satisfied, the system is guaranteed to not be in a causal connection.

Review of top quark mass measurements in CMS

The top quark mass is one of the most intriguing parameters of the standard model (SM). Its value indicates a Yukawa coupling close to unity, and the resulting strong ties to Higgs physics make the top quark mass a crucial ingredient for understanding essential aspects of the electroweak sector of the SM. This review offers the first comprehensive overview of the top quark mass measurements performed by the CMS Collaboration using the data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Moreover, a detailed description of the top quark event reconstruction is provided and dedicated studies of the dominant uncertainties in the modelling of the signal processes are discussed. The interpretation of the experimental results on the top quark mass in terms of the SM Lagrangian parameter is challenging and is a focus of an ongoing discussion in the theory community. The CMS Collaboration has performed two main types of top quark mass measurements, addressing this challenge from different perspectives: highly precise ‘direct’ measurements, based on reconstructed top quark decay products and relying exclusively on Monte-Carlo simulations, as well as ‘indirect’ measurements, where the simulations are employed to determine parton-level cross sections that are compared to fixed-order perturbative calculations. Recent mass extractions using Lorentz-boosted top quarks open a new avenue of measurements based on top quark decay products contained in a single particle jet, with promising prospects for accurate theoretical interpretations.

Search for a new heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A first search at the LHC for a new heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson ϕ in the fully hadronic final state is presented, where the ϕ boson is identified by its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair. The search is focused on final states in which the decay products of the highly Lorentz boosted top quark and ϕ boson are each reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet with distinct substructure. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018. The single production of a vector-like top quark, T′, is used as a benchmark model for the signal process. The results of this search are combined with those of a previous CMS search in which semileptonic decays of the top quark were used. No significant excess of data is observed with respect to the background prediction. For the case where the neutral scalar is a standard model Higgs boson and the T′ quark width is 5% of its mass, T′ quark masses between 0.85 and 1.3 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level and the most stringent limits to date are set for masses above 2 TeV . For other ϕ boson masses, upper limits as low as 0.1 fb are set on the product of the T′ quark production cross section and branching fraction for its decay to a top quark and a ϕ boson.

Dynamics of heavy quarks in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM plasma

We calculate the probability distribution P(k) for a heavy quark with velocity v propagating through strongly coupled N = 4 SYM plasma in the ’t Hooft limit (N c → ∞, λ = g 2 N c → ∞) at a temperature T to acquire a momentum k due to interactions with the plasma. This distribution encodes the well-known drag coefficient η D and the transverse and longitudinal momentum diffusion coefficients κ T and κ L . The jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ can be extracted from P(k) for v = 1. Going beyond these known Gaussian characteristics of P(k), our calculation determines all of the higher order and mixed moments to leading order in 1/$\sqrt{λ}$ for the first time. These non-Gaussian features of P(k) include qualitatively novel correlations between longitudinal energy loss and transverse momentum broadening at nonzero v. We show that all higher moments scale characteristically with an effective temperature of the boosted plasma in the heavy quark rest frame, and we demonstrate that these non-Gaussian characteristics can be sizable in magnitude and even dominant in physically relevant situations. We use these results to derive a Kolmogorov equation for the evolution of the probability distribution for the total momentum of a heavy quark that propagates through strongly coupled plasma. This evolution equation accounts for all higher order correlations between transverse momentum broadening and longitudinal energy loss, which we have calculated from first principles. It reduces to a Fokker-Planck equation when truncated to only include the effects of η D , κ T and κ L . Remarkably, while heavy quarks do not reach kinetic equilibrium with the plasma if evolved with this Fokker-Planck equation, by showing that the Boltzmann distribution is a static solution of the all-order Kolmogorov equation that we have derived we demonstrate that heavy quarks do reach kinetic equilibrium if evolved with this equation. Our results thus provide a dynamically complete framework for understanding the thermalization of a heavy quark that may be initially far from equilibrium in the strongly coupled N = 4 SYM plasma — as well as new insight into heavy quark transport and equilibration in quark-gluon plasma.
