Theory of 2 omega(sub pe) radiation induced by the bow shock

A new radiation emission mechanism is proposed to explain electomagnetic radiation observed at twice the electron plasma frequency, 2 omega(sub pe), in the upstream region of the Earth's bow shock. This radiation had its origin at the electron foreshock boundary where energetic electron beams and intense narrow-band Langmiur waves are observed. The proposed emission mechanism results from the interaction of the electron beam and Langmuir waves that are backscattered off thermal ions. This interaction is described by a nonlinear dispersion equation which incorporates an effect owing to electron trajectory modulation by the backscattered Langmuir waves. Subsequent analysis of the dispersion equation reveals two important consequences. First, a long-wavelength electrostatic quasi-mode with frequency at 2 omega(sub pe) is excited, and second, the quasi-mode and the electomagnetic mode are nonlinearly coupled. The implication is that, when the excited 2 omega(sub pe) quasi-mode propagates in an inhomgeneous medium with slightly decreasing density, the quasi-mode can be converted directly into an electromagnetic mode. Hense the electomagnetic radiation at twice the plasma frequency is generated. Numerical solutions of the dispersion equation with the choice of parameters that describe physical characteristics of the electron foreshock are presented, which illustrates the viability of the new mechanism.

Stimulated scattering instability of lower hybrid waves

The excitation of a low-frequency quasi-mode together with two lower hybrid sidebands by a lower hybrid pump is analyzed for laboratory plasmas. This instability is excited in a narrow spectral range around the scale length of the quasi-mode which is about half the pump wavelength. The growth rates are of order of the ion cyclotron frequency. This instability can modify the intensity distribution of the pump wave and as a consequence affect the energy deposition of the pump wave in plasmas. The smaller parallel phase velocities of the forwardscattered lower hybrid sidebands are conducive to the acceleration of bulk electrons along the magnetic field.

Asymmetric Eyewall Vertical Motion in a High-Resolution Simulation of Hurricane Bonnie (1998)

Reasor et al. (2004) examined the tilting of a vortex by shear and found that a damping mechanism intrinsic to the dry adiabatic dynamics suppresses departures from an upright state. This realignment occurs through projection of the tilt asymmetry onto two types of vortex Rossby waves: sheared vortex Rossby waves, in which the radial shear of the swirling flow axisymmetrizes tilt asymmetries, and a quasi-mode, or discrete, vortex Rossby wave that, in the absence of damping, causes precession of the upper vortex until it realigns with the lower one (thereafter undergoing repeated cycles of tilting and realignment). With damping, the vortex achieves a downshear-left equilibrium tilt. This paper examines the role of a damped quasi-mode in producing asymmetric vertical motions in a high-resolution simulation of Hurricane Bonnie (1998).

Kinetic Scale Structure of Low-Frequency Waves and Fluctuations

The dissipation of solar wind turbulence at kinetic scales is believed to be important for the heating of the corona and for accelerating the wind. The linear Vlasov kinetic theory is a useful tool for identifying various wave modes, including kinetic Alfven, fast magnetosonic/whistler, and ion-acoustic (or kinetic slow), and their possible roles in the dissipation. However, the kinetic mode structure in the vicinity of ion-cyclotron modes is not clearly understood. The present paper aims to further elucidate the structure of these low-frequency waves by introducing discrete particle effects through hybrid simulations and Klimontovich formalism of spontaneous emission theory. The theory and simulation of spontaneously emitted low-frequency fluctuations are employed to identify and distinguish the detailed mode structures associated with ion-Bernstein modes versus quasi-modes. The spontaneous emission theory and simulation also confirm the findings of the Vlasov theory in that the kinetic Alfven waves can be defined over a wide range of frequencies, including the proton cyclotron frequency and its harmonics, especially for high-beta plasmas. This implies that these low-frequency modes may play predominant roles even in the fully kinetic description of kinetic scale turbulence and dissipation despite the fact that cyclotron harmonic and Bernstein modes may also play important roles in wave-particle interactions.
