Quaternized Polynorbornene Random Copolymers for Fuel Cell Devices

Quaternized polymers are critical components for various energy devices. Vinyl-addition polynorbornenes provide high mechanical strength, high ion conductivity, and chemical stability in a wide range of pH environments due to the all-C–C bond backbone. In this paper, we present the synthesis of a series of quaternized polynorbornene random copolymers via vinyl addition polymerization and elucidate the impact of polymer composition on their properties. The quaternary ammonium alkyl tether length and the ratio of n-hexylnorbornene to unsubstituted norbornene are systemically tailored. A copolymer of 5-(3-bromopropyl)-2-norbornene and norbornene with pendant trimethylammonium groups achieved hydroxide conductivity of 109 mS/cm at 80 °C with a modest water uptake of 72%. The addition of n-hexylnorbornene to the copolymer, to make a terpolymer, allows for the polymer composition to be tailored for properties, including a decrease in water uptake and higher processability, despite a slightly decreased hydroxide conductivity. Moreover, the developed membranes are chemically robust and highly mechanically stable, enabling thin membranes to be easily fabricated. This study provides insight into important design parameters for quaternized polynorbornenes for a variety of energy storage and conversion devices, especially fuel cells.

Quaternized poly(arylene ether benzonitrile) membranes for vanadium redox flow batteries

In this work, a series of quaternized poly (arylene ether benzonitrile)s (QAxCN; x = percent quaternization) were synthesized for the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) application. The presence of highly polar nitrile groups incorporated in the quaternized polymer chain provides desirable polymer properties (low water uptake, high dimensional stability and low VO 2+ permeability) without compromising ion conductivity. VRFB single cells using the aforementioned membranes showed excellent performance. As a result, the cell using a 15 μm-thick QA50CN membrane exhibited superior coulombic efficiency (98.2%) and comparable energy efficiency (86.5%) at 40 mA cm -2 compared to the single cell using Nafion-212 with a coulombic efficiency of 95.5% and an energy efficiency of 86.2%. The cell cycling stability and membrane oxidative stability data confirmed that the QAxCN membranes have the potential to replace Nafion membranes for energy storage in VRFB applications.

Rapid Postgrafting Reaction to Prepare Quaternized Polycarbazoles

We report a rapid postgrafting reaction to prepare alkyl ammonium functionalized polycarbazoles from a commercially available monomer. This novel synthetic approach provides benefit to preparing the high molecular weight quaternized polycarbazoles within 1 h of Friedel–Crafts polycondensation, avoiding the synthesis and purification step to prepare a functionalized monomer. The postgrafting reaction produces hexyl alkyl ammonium functionalized polycarbazole with 100% grafting degree. However, the postgrafting reaction produced only 60% grafting with propyl alkyl ammonium due to the competitive elimination reaction because of the higher acidity of β-hydrogen in the propyl alkyl group resulting from the proximity of the bromide and ammonium groups. The hexyl alkyl ammonium functionalized polycarbazole has a high hydroxide conductivity of 103 mS cm –1 at 80 °C and showed excellent alkaline stability with less than 3% loss of ion group after 1 M NaOH treatment at 80 °C for 500 h. In conclusion, this study highlights that the postgrafting reaction provides a pathway for the scale-up synthesis of quaternized aryl ether-free polyaromatics.

An Efficient Rechargeable Aluminium–Amine Battery Working Under Quaternization Chemistry

Rechargeable aluminium (Al) batteries (RABs) have long-been pursued due to the high sustainability and three-electron-transfer properties of Al metal. However, limited redox chemistry is available for rechargeable Al batteries, which restricts the exploration of cathode materials. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient Al–amine battery based on a quaternization reaction, in which nitrogen (radical) cations (R 3 N .+ or R 4 N + ) are formed to store the anionic Al complex. The reactive aromatic amine molecules further oligomerize during cycling, inhibiting amine dissolution into the electrolyte. Consequently, the constructed Al–amine battery exhibits a high reversible capacity of 135 mAh g -1 along with a superior cycling life (4000 cycles), fast charge capability and a high energy efficiency of 94.2 %. Moreover, the Al–amine battery shows excellent stability against self-discharge, far beyond conventional Al–graphite batteries. Our findings pave an avenue to advance the chemistry of RABs and thus battery performance.

Highly quaternized polystyrene ionomers for high performance anion exchange membrane water electrolysers

Alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysers to produce hydrogen from water remain at an early stage of development, and their performance is far lower than that of systems based on proton exchange membranes. Here, we report an ammonium-enriched anion exchange ionomer that improves the performance of an AEM electrolyser to levels approaching that of state-of-the-art proton exchange membrane electrolysers. Using rotating-disk electrode experiments, we show that a high pH (>13) in the electrode binder is the critical factor for improving the activity of the hydrogen- and oxygen-evolution reactions in AEM electrolysers. Based on this observation, we prepared and tested several quaternized polystyrene electrode binders in an AEM electrolyser. Using the binder with the highest ionic concentration and a NiFe oxygen evolution catalyst, we demonstrated performance of 2.7 A cm -2 at 1.8 V without a corrosive circulating alkaline solution. The limited durability of the AEM electrolyser remains a challenge to be addressed in the future.

Quaternized chitosan as a biopolymer sanitizer for leafy vegetables: synthesis, characteristics, and traditional vs. dry nano-aerosol applications

A series of quaternary dimethyl-(alkyl)-ammonium chitosan derivatives (QACs) was synthesized and studied for physicochemical properties and bioactivity. The QACs tended to spontaneously self-assembly into nanoaggregates. Antimicrobial activity was examined in vitro on Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Listeria innocua (L. innocua) bacteria as well as phytopathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea. The hexyl chain-substituted QAC-6 demonstrated the highest potency causing 3.0- and 4.5-log CFU mL-1 reduction of E. coli and L. innocua, respectively. QAC-6 was tested for antimicrobial activity on stainless steel coupons and fresh spinach leaves. A traditional ‘wet’ application (spray) and dry Engineered Water Nanostructure (EWNS) approach were used for spinach decontamination. With both approaches, significant reduction of microbial load on the treated produce was achieved. Finally, the wet application showed a greater reduction of microbial load, while the advantages of EWNS were reaching the antimicrobial effect with miniscule dose of active agent leaving treated surface visibly dry.

Water-Free Proton-Conducting Membranes for Fuel Cells

Poly-4-vinylpyridinebisulfate (P4VPBS) is a polymeric salt that has shown promise as a water-free proton-conducting material (solid electrolyte) suitable for use in membrane/electrode assemblies in fuel cells. Heretofore, proton-conducting membranes in fuel cells have been made from perfluorinated ionomers that cannot conduct protons in the absence of water and, consequently, cannot function at temperatures >100 C. In addition, the stability of perfluorinated ionomers at temperatures >100 C is questionable. However, the performances of fuel cells of the power systems of which they are parts could be improved if operating temperatures could be raised above 140 C. What is needed to make this possible is a solid-electrolyte material, such as P4VPBS, that can be cast into membranes and that both retains proton conductivity and remains stable in the desired higher operating temperature range. A family of solid-electrolyte materials different from P4VPBS was described in Anhydrous Proton-Conducting Membranes for Fuel Cells (NPO-30493), NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 29, No. 8 (August 2005), page 48. Those materials notably include polymeric quaternized amine salts. If molecules of such a polymeric salt could be endowed with flexible chain structures, it would be possible to overcome the deficiencies of simple organic amine salts that must melt before being able to conduct protons. However, no polymeric quaternized amine salts have yet shown to be useful in this respect. The present solid electrolyte is made by quaternizing the linear polymer poly- 4-vinylpyridine (P4VP) to obtain P4VPBS. It is important to start with P4VP having a molecular weight of 160,000 daltons because P4VPBS made from lower-molecular-weight P4VP yields brittle membranes. In an experimental synthesis, P4VP was dissolved in methanol and then reacted with an excess of sulfuric acid to precipitate P4VPBS. The precipitate was recovered, washed several times with methanol to remove traces of acid, and dried to a white granular solid. In another synthesis, nanoparticles of silica rich with surface hydroxyl groups were added to P4VP in methanol solution, which was then reacted with excess sulfuric acid to precipitate granules of a composite that most probably had the composition (P4VPBS)-SiO2-SiO(HSO4)2. The granular P4VPBS produced in the first-mentioned synthesis was dissolved in water to make a glue-like, turbid solution; the granular P4VPBS/silica composite produced in the second-mentioned synthesis was mixed with water to make a turbid, glue-like suspension. The proportions of polymer salt to water in such preparations can be varied; it was found that approximately equal parts of water and polymer salt yield a solution or suspension amenable to further processing.

Designing Anion-Exchange Ionomers with Oriented Nanoscale Phase Separation at a Silver Interface

We report performance of polymer electrolyte-based energy systems is significantly impacted by transport within the electrode catalyst layer, where ionomer thin films coat catalyst particles. Proton exchange ionomer thin films have been thoroughly characterized, but few studies have critically examined anion-exchange ionomer (AEI) thin films. Further, none have reported nanoscale phase separation for hydrocarbon AEIs, which is critical to mitigate transport resistances. In this work, a set of hydrocarbon-based AEIs with nanoscale phase separation are developed from tunable block copolymer systems composed of polyisoprene (PIp) and polychloromethylstyrene (PCMS). The effect of the PIp/PCMS ratio, architecture, and thickness on the thin-film morphology of the neutral block copolymer precursors on silicon and silver substrates is investigated using grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AEIs are prepared by quaternizing with trimethylamine or methylpiperidine and their cation-dependent morphology is characterized at 60 °C and 95% RH. A perpendicularly aligned morphology is observed on silver, while no phase separation is observed on silicon, indicating that silver-polymer interfacial interactions drive phase separation. After quaternization, dipole-dipole interactions induce some disorder, but nanoscale phase separation is still maintained. GISAXS patterns are modeled using a Unified Fit approach to understand water uptake and swelling, and recommendations for AEI design are presented.

Proton conducting membranes for high temperature fuel cells with solid state water free membranes

A water free, proton conducting membrane for use in a fuel cell is fabricated as a highly conducting sheet of converted solid state organic amine salt, such as converted acid salt of triethylenediamine with two quaternized tertiary nitrogen atoms, combined with a nanoparticulate oxide and a stable binder combined with the converted solid state organic amine salt to form a polymeric electrolyte membrane. In one embodiment the membrane is derived from triethylenediamine sulfate, hydrogen phosphate or trifiate, an oxoanion with at least one ionizable hydrogen, organic tertiary amine bisulfate, polymeric quaternized amine bisulfate or phosphate, or polymeric organic compounds with quaternizable nitrogen combined with Nafion to form an intimate network with ionic interactions.

Phenyl‐Free Polynorbornenes for Potential Anion Exchange Ionomers for Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers

Abstract Ionomers in the catalyst layer play a critical role in the performance of fuel cells and electrolyzers. Phenyl adsorption on hydrogen oxidation catalysts and electrochemical oxidation of phenyl moieties on oxygen evolution catalysts are detrimental to the alkaline devices’ performance. Here the adsorption energy of phenyl‐containing ionomers is compared to provide the rationale for implementing phenyl‐free ionomers. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the norbornane fragment has minimal adsorption energy on Pt(111) due to the absence of aromatic π electrons. A soluble quaternized polynorbornene ionomer is prepared by vinyl addition polymerization, and it exhibits high performance in both fuel cells and electrolyzers, proving the advantage of the phenyl‐free structure. This study establishes the phenyl adsorption energy‐electrode performance relationship, highlighting the importance of material interactions between the catalysts and ionomers.

Naphthalene‐Diimide‐Based Ionenes as Universal Interlayers for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Self‐doping ionene polymers were efficiently synthesized by reacting functional naphthalene diimide (NDI) with 1,3‐dibromopropane ( NDI‐NI ) or trans ‐1,4‐dibromo‐2‐butene ( NDI‐CI ) via quaternization polymerization. These NDI‐based ionene polymers are universal interlayers with random molecular orientation, boosting the efficiencies of fullerene‐based, non‐fullerene‐based, and ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) over a wide range of interlayer thicknesses, with a maximum efficiency of 16.9 %. NDI‐NI showed a higher interfacial dipole (Δ), conductivity, and electron mobility than NDI‐CI , affording solar cells with higher efficiencies. These polymers proved to efficiently lower the work function ( WF ) of air‐stable metals and optimize the contact between metal electrode and organic semiconductor, highlighting their power to overcome energy barriers of electron injection and extraction processes for efficient organic electronics.

Phase Behavior of Charged Star Block Copolymers at Fluids Interface

The phase behavior of block copolymers (BCPs) at the water-oil interface is influenced by the segmental interaction parameter (χ) and chain architecture. We synthesized a series of star block copolymers (s-BCPs) having polystyrene (PS) as core and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) as corona. The interaction parameters of block-block (χ PS-P2VP ) and block-solvent (χ P2VP-solvent ) were varied by adjusting the pH of the aqueous solution. Lowering pH increased the fraction of quaternized-P2VP (Q-P2VP) with enhanced hydrophilicity. By transferring the equilibrated interfacial assemblies, morphologies ranging from bicontinuous films at pH of 7 and 3.1 to nanoporous and nanotubular structure at pH of 0.65 were observed. The nanoporous films formed hexagonally packed pores in s-BCP matrix, while nanotubes comprised Q-P2VP as corona and PS as core. Control over pore size, d-spacing between pores, and nanotube diameters was achieved by varying polymer concentration, molecular weight, volume fraction and arm number of s-BCPs. Large-scale nanoporous films were obtained by freeze-drying emulsions. Remarkably, the morphologies of linear BCPs were inverted, forming hexagonal-packed rigid spherical micelles with Q-P2VP as core and PS as corona in multilayer. Here, this work provides insights of phase behaviors of BCP at fluids interface and offer a facile approach to prepare nanoporous film with well-controlled pore structure.

Optimization of anionic conductivity through the coexistence of ionomer cluster and backbone-backbone morphologies in anion exchange membranes

Random copolymers of poly(4-vinylpyridine) and polyisoprene were synthesized, and subsequently quaternized with 1-alkylbromides. The number of carbons on the pendant side-chain of the resultant comb-shaped polymer, n, ranged from 2-8. The comb-shaped polymers were crosslinked employing thiol-ene chemistry to give mechanically robust ion conducting membranes. Analysis by wide and medium-angle X-ray scattering show three morphology regimes that are dependent on the number of carbons on the pendant side-chains. When n = 2, ionomer cluster morphology was dominant, when n = 8 backbone-backbone morphology was dominant, and when n = 3-6, the membrane showed a coexistence of both ionomer cluster and backbone-backbone morphologies. Evaluation of the water uptake of the membranes showed a maximum water uptake per cation of 9.5 when n = 5 at 95% relative humidity (RH) and 60 degrees C. Finally, conductivity of the samples characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed bromide conductivity as high as 110 mS/cm when n = 3 at 95% RH and 90 degrees C.

PBI nanofiber mat-reinforced anion exchange membranes with covalently linked interfaces for use in water electrolysers

Anion exchange membranes (AEM) are key components in anion exchange membrane water electrolysers. Recently developed materials are less susceptible to the alkaline degradation of the polymer backbone and quaternary ammonium groups. A remaining challenge is the mechanical stability in contact with hot water and dimensional stability when the temperature of the feed solution changes. One solution is to reinforce membranes with a porous support. Since support materials like PEEK or PTFE have a different swelling behavior than the matrix and no strong interactions with the matrix, voids can form, and gas crossover increases. In this work, we approach this issue by pore filling polybenzimidazole nanofiber mats with the bromomethylated precursor of mTPN, an ultra-stable AEM material. During drying, a covalent interaction between support (PBI amine groups) and matrix (-CH 2 Br) is established. After quaternization, the optimized PBI/mTPN-50.120 composite membrane still shows a high conductivity of 62 mS cm –1 , but 37% reduced length swelling in comparison to the non-reinforced membrane. Tensile strength and Young's modulus increase 17% and 56% to 49 MPa and 680 MPa, respectively. In an electrolyser, a stable voltage of 1.98V at 0.25 A cm –2 was achieved, and no change in membrane resistance was observed over the test time of 200 h (50°C, 1 M KOH, catalysts based on Ni/Fe and Mo).

Molecular-Level Insights into the Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Structure and Dynamics of Neutral and Charged Polyimides

We use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how increasing ionic functionalization influences polyimide (PI) behavior in ionic liquid (IL) solvation environments. Here, we examine three polymer systems with varying charge densities: a neutral polyimide [N−PI] containing imidazole rings and progressively introduce charge through quaternization to create singly [C−PI] + and doubly charged [C−2PI] 2+ variants across a wide range of IL concentration (0−90 wt %). Through comprehensive structural, mechanical, and electrostatic analyses, we reveal that polymer charge density plays a central role in shaping IL organization and interaction with the polymer matrix. At low IL content, charged systems exhibit strong electrostatic complexation, leading to chain compaction, localized ESP environments, and elevated dielectric constants. As IL concentration increases, the effect of the different polymer charge states becomes less significant. Notably, an intermediate composition regime at approximately 50 wt % IL is associated with changes in IL-rich domain connectivity and overall system behavior across all three PI systems.
