Resurgence of the renormalization group equation

We show how the renormalons emerge from the renormalization group equation with a priori no reference to any Feynman diagrams. The proof is rather given by recasting the renormalization group equation as a resurgent equation studied in the mathematical literature, which describes a function with an infinite number of singularities in the positive axis of the Borel plane. Consistency requires a one-to-one correspondence between the existence of such kind of equation and the actual (generalized) Borel resummation of the renormalons through a one-parameter transseries. Our finding suggests how non-perturbative contributions can affect the running couplings. We also discuss these concepts within the context of gauge theories, making use of the large number of flavor expansion.

Renormalization-group equations of the LEFT at two loops: dimension-six baryon-number-violating operators

We present the second part of a systematic calculation of the two-loop anomalous dimensions for the low-energy effective field theory below the electroweak scale (LEFT): the baryon-number-violating sector at dimension six in the power counting. We obtain the results in two different schemes: in the algebraically consistent ’t Hooft-Veltman scheme for γ 5 , corrected for evanescent as well as chiral-symmetry-breaking effects through finite renormalizations; and in naive dimensional regularization, which in the considered sector of the theory does not lead to any ill-defined γ 5 -odd traces. Our results are of interest for a reanalysis of the constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model from proton-decay searches within an EFT framework at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy.

An algebraic formula for two loop renormalization of scalar quantum field theory

We find a general formula for the two-loop renormalization counterterms of a scalar quantum field theory with interactions containing up to two derivatives, extending ’t Hooft’s one-loop result. The method can also be used for theories with higher derivative interactions, as long as the terms in the Lagrangian have at most one derivative acting on each field. We show that diagrams with factorizable topologies do not contribute to the renormalization group equations. The results in this paper will be combined with the geometric method in a subsequent paper to obtain the counterterms and renormalization group equations for the scalar sector of effective field theories (EFT) to two-loop order.

Renormalization of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory from geometry

S-matrix elements are invariant under field redefinitions of the Lagrangian. They are determined by geometric quantities such as the curvature of the field-space manifold of scalar and gauge fields. We present a formalism where scalar and gauge fields are treated together, with a metric on the combined space of both types of fields. Scalar and gauge scattering amplitudes are given by the Riemann curvature Rijkl of this combined space, with indices i, j, k, l chosen to be scalar or gauge indices depending on the type of external particle. One-loop divergences can also be computed in terms of geometric invariants of the combined space, which greatly simplifies the computation of renormalization group equations. We apply our formalism to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), and compute the renormalization group equations for even-parity bosonic operators to mass dimension eight.

Low-energy effective field theory below the electroweak scale: anomalous dimensions

We compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of the low-energy effective Lagrangian below the electroweak scale, up to terms of dimension six. The theory has 70 dimension-five and 3631 dimension-six Hermitian operators that preserve baryon and lepton number, as well as additional operators that violate baryon number and lepton number. The renormalization group equations for the quark and lepton masses and the QCD and QED gauge couplings are modified by dimension-five and dimension-six operator contributions. We compute the renormalization group equations from one insertion of dimension-five and dimension-six operators, as well as two insertions of dimension-five operators, to all terms of dimension less than or equal to six. As a result, the use of the equations of motion to eliminate operators can be ambiguous, and we show how to resolve this ambiguity by a careful use of field redefinitions.

Asymptotically safe f(R)-gravity coupled to matter I: The polynomial case

We use the functional renormalization group equation for the effective average action to study the non-Gaussian renormalization group fixed points (NGFPs) arising within the framework of f(R)-gravity minimally coupled to an arbitrary number of scalar, Dirac, and vector fields. Based on this setting we provide comprehensible estimates whose gravity–matter systems give rise to NGFPs suitable for rendering the theory asymptotically safe. The analysis employs an exponential split of the metric fluctuations and retains a 7-parameter family of coarse-graining operators allowing the inclusion of non-trivial endomorphisms in the regularization procedure. For vanishing endomorphisms, it is established that gravity coupled to the matter content of the standard model of particle physics and many beyond the standard model extensions exhibit NGFPs whose properties are strikingly similar to the case of pure gravity: there are two UV-relevant directions and the position and critical exponents converge rapidly when higher powers of the scalar curvature are included. Conversely, none of the phenomenologically interesting gravity–matter systems exhibits a stable NGFP when a Type II coarse graining operator is employed. Our analysis resolves this tension by demonstrating that the NGFPs seen in the two settings belong to different universality classes.

The Most Effective Model for Describing the Universal Behavior of a Noisy Kuramoto–Sivashinsky Equation as a Paradigmatic Model

We study a noisy Kuramoto–Sivashinsky (KS) equation which describes unstable surface growth and chemical turbulence. It has been conjectured that the universal long-wavelength behavior of the equation, which is characterized by scale-dependent parameters, is described by a Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) equation. We consider this conjecture by analyzing a renormalization-group equation for a class of generalized KPZ equations. We then uniquely determine the parameter values of the KPZ equation that most effectively describes the universal long-wavelength behavior of the noisy KS equation.

Extending the predictive power of perturbative QCD using the principle of maximum conformality and the Bayesian analysis

In addition to the evaluation of high-order loop contributions, the precision and predictive power of perturbative QCD (pQCD) predictions depends on two important issues: (1) how to achieve a reliable, convergent fixed-order series, and (2) how to reliably estimate the contributions of unknown higher-order terms. The recursive use of renormalization group equation, together with the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), eliminates the renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities of the conventional pQCD series. The result is a conformal, scale-invariant series of finite order which also satisfies all of the principles of the renormalization group. In this paper we propose a novel Bayesian-based approach to estimate the size of the unknown higher order contributions based on an optimized analysis of probability distributions. We show that by using the PMC conformal series, in combination with the Bayesian analysis, one can consistently achieve high degree of reliability estimates for the unknown high order terms. Thus the predictive power of pQCD can be greatly improved. We illustrate this procedure for two pQCD observables: R e+e– and R τ , which are each known up to four loops in pQCD. Numerical analyses confirm that by using the scale-independent and more convergent PMC conformal series, one can achieve reliable Bayesian probability estimates for the unknown higher-order contributions.

Quantum Fluctuations and Multifractally enhanced Superconductivity in Disordered Thin Films

The interplay between electron–electron interactions and weak localization (or anti-localization) phenomena in two-dimensional systems can significantly enhance the superconducting transition temperature. For this work, we develop the theory of quantum fluctuations within such multifractally enhanced superconducting states in thin films. In conditions of weak disorder, we employ the Finkel’stein nonlinear sigma model to derive an effective action for the superconducting order parameter and the quasiclassical Green’s function, meticulously accounting for the influence of quantum fluctuations. This effective action, applicable for interactions of any strength, reveals the critical role of well-known collective modes in a dirty superconductor, and its saddle-point analysis leads to modified Usadel and gap equations. These equations comprehensively incorporate the renormalizations stemming from the interplay between interactions and disorder, resulting in the non-trivial energy dependence of the gap function. Notably, our analysis establishes a direct relation between the self-consistent gap equation at the superconducting transition temperature and the known renormalization group equations for interaction parameters in the normal state.

Scale-fixed predictions for γ + η c production in electron-positron collisions at NNLO in perturbative QCD

In the paper, we present QCD predictions for γ + η c production at an electron-positron collider up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy without renormalization scale ambiguities. The NNLO total cross-section for e + + e – → γ + η c using the conventional scale-setting approach has large renormalization scale ambiguities, usually estimated by choosing the renormalization scale to be the e + e – center-of-mass collision energy $\sqrt{s}$. The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) provides a systematic way to eliminate such renormalization scale ambiguities by summing the nonconformal β contributions into the QCD coupling α s ( Q 2 ). The renormalization group equation then sets the value of α s for the process. The PMC renormalization scale reflects the virtuality of the underlying process, and the resulting predictions satisfy all of the requirements of renormalization group invariance, including renormalization scheme invariance. After applying the PMC, we obtain a renormalization scale-and-scheme independent prediction, σ | NNLO,PMC ≃ 41.18 fb for $\sqrt{s}$=10.6 GeV. The resulting pQCD series matches the series for conformal theory and thus has no divergent renormalon contributions. The large K factor which contributes to this process reinforces the importance of uncalculated NNNLO and higher-order terms. Using the PMC scale-and-scheme independent conformal series and the Padé approximation approach, we predict σ | NNNLO,PMC+Pade ≃ 18.99 fb, which is consistent with the recent BELLE measurement ${\sigma}^{\mathrm{obs}}={16.58}_{-9.93}^{+10.51}$ fb at $\sqrt{s}$ ≃ 10.6 GeV. This procedure also provides a first estimate of the NNNLO contribution.

Wilsonian effective field theory of two-dimensional Van Hove singularities

We study two-dimensional fermions with a short-range interaction in the presence of a Van Hove singularity. It is shown that this system can be consistently described by an effective field theory whose Fermi surface is subdivided into regions as defined by a factorization scale, and that the theory is renormalizable in the sense that all of the counterterms are well defined in the IR limit. The theory has the unusual feature that the renormalization-group equation for the coupling has an explicit dependence on the renormalization scale, much as in theories of Wilson lines. In contrast to the case of a round Fermi surface, there are multiple marginal interactions with nontrivial RG flow. The Cooper instability remains strongest in the BCS channel. Here, we also show that the marginal Fermi-liquid scenario for the quasiparticle width is a robust consequence of the Van Hove singularity. Our results are universal in the sense that they do not depend on the detailed properties of the Fermi surface away from the singularity.

Extending the predictive power of perturbative QCD

The predictive power of perturbative QCD (pQCD) depends on two important issues: (1) how to eliminate the renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities at fixed order, and (2) how to reliably estimate the contributions of unknown higher-order terms using information from the known pQCD series. The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) satisfies all of the principles of the renormalization group and eliminates the scheme-and-scale ambiguities by the recursive use of the renormalization group equation to determine the scale of the QCD running coupling αs at each order. Moreover, the resulting PMC predictions are independent of the choice of the renormalization scheme, satisfying the key principle of renormalization group invariance. In this paper, we show that by using the conformal series derived using the PMC single-scale procedure, in combination with the Padé Approximation Approach (PAA), one can achieve quantitatively useful estimates for the unknown higher-order terms from the known perturbative series. We illustrate this procedure for three hadronic observables R e + e – , R τ , and Γ( H → bb¯) which are each known to 4 loops in pQCD. We show that if the PMC prediction for the conformal series for an observable (of leading order α p s ) has been determined at order αns, then the [ ] = [0/n–p] Padé series provides quantitatively useful predictions for the higher-order terms. We also show that the PMC + PAA predictions agree at all orders with the fundamental, scheme-independent Generalized Crewther relations which connect observables, such as deep inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering, to hadronic e + e – annihilation. Furthermore, by using the combination of the PMC series and the Padé method, the predictive power of pQCD theory can be greatly improved.

Renormalization-group running of dimension-8 four-fermion operators in the SMEFT

We compute the renormalization-group equations governing the evolution of dimension-8 four-fermion operators in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). We describe the calculation and present analytic results for both the full flavor structure of the SMEFT and with the assumption of minimal flavor violation. We present numerical results for the renormalization-group evolution of the coefficients, and study their impact on fits of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Drell-Yan data. The effects of running on the dimension-8 coefficients can reach 50% or more when evolving from 10 TeV scale down to few-GeV energies relevant for the analysis of fixed-target data. However, the impact of the dimension-8 running on the analysis of Drell-Yan data from the LHC is minimal.

A package for renormalization group running in the SMEFT with sterile neutrinos

Abstract Sterile neutrinos are well-motivated beyond the Standard Model (BSM) particles. The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) augmented with these new fields is known as the $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT. We present the first code for solving the renormalization group equations (RGEs) of the $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT in an automated way. For this purpose, we have implemented the $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT as a new effective field theory (EFT) in the Wilson coefficient exchange format . Furthermore, we included anomalous dimensions depending on the gauge couplings and Yukawas in the python package . This novel version of allows a consistent inclusion of $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT renormalization group (RG) running effects above the electroweak (EW) scale in phenomenological studies involving sterile neutrinos. Moreover, this new release allows us to study EW, strong, and Yukawa running effects separately within the SMEFT.

Fermion geometry and the renormalization of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

The geometry of field space governs on-shell scattering amplitudes. We formulate a geometric description of effective field theories which extends previous results for scalars and gauge fields to fermions. The field-space geometry reorganizes and simplifies the computation of quantum loop corrections. Using this geometric framework, we calculate the fermion loop contributions to the renormalization group equations for bosonic operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory up to mass dimension eight.
