Development of The DOME Shield Model For The NRIC Virtual Test Bed

As several advanced reactor concepts are maturing, test beds are needed to accelerate the demonstration and deployment of these advanced nuclear technologies. The National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) is building new or enhancing existing US Department of Energy infrastructure to support testing of components and systems. Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) will utilize the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) dome containment structure to host reactor demonstrations. A reactor supplemental shielding is needed so that DOME dose requirements are met. To accelerate the confirmatory analysis required for the reactor demonstration, the NRIC Virtual Test Bed (VTB) is developing a virtual model of the DOME shield that will be made available on the VTB public repository. This will allow developers to leverage advanced modeling and simulation tools to ensure their reactor demonstration concept will meet dose requirement and the limit concrete temperature in the shield during steady state and transient operation conditions. This paper presents the model developed for the DOME shield using open-source tools: MOOSE heat transfer module, Monte Carlo code OpenMC, and Cardinal to calculate the DOME shield temperature distribution during steady state

CHARGE-MAP: An integrated framework to study the multicriteria EV charging infrastructure expansion problem

The widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years has necessitated the development of effective charging infrastructures. However, charging infrastructure expansion is a multifaceted problem that requires careful consideration of the existing infrastructure, spatiotemporal distribution of charging demands, power-grid capacity, and budget constraints. Here, to approach this complex problem, we present CHARGE-MAP, a data-driven simulation-optimization framework, focused on ensuring meaningful charging experience for individual EV owners. CHARGE-MAP integrates three modules: an agent-based simulation module that estimates spatiotemporal distribution of charging demands by modeling EV adopter mobility and charging behavior; an optimization module that determines optimal new charging station/charger locations and capacities, while minimizing expected detour distances and wait-times with a limited number of new stations; and a power module that determines how to connect the stations to the power grid while maintaining its stability. Using the state of Virginia (consisting of 95 counties and 38 independent cities) as a case study, our results show that CHARGE-MAP can meet the demand of ~198,600 predicted EVs with 1,305 new public charging stations and 2,164 new chargers. It reduces average detour distances for charging by 66% and wait-times at stations by 72% compared to the existing infrastructure. Furthermore, transformer capacity requirement analysis reveals that only 1.8% of residential transformers require upgrades, while over 80% of commercial charging locations can be supported with modest transformer infrastructure (25 to 50 kVA). This indicates that targeted investments can facilitate cost-effective EV integration. Consequently, CHARGE-MAP provides policymakers and urban planners with crucial data-driven insights for effective EV charging infrastructure expansion. Sign up for PNAS alerts.

Femtosecond Laser Desorption Postionization MS vs ToF-SIMS Imaging for Uncovering Biomarkers Buried in Geological Samples

The study of lipid molecular fossils by traditional biomarker analysis requires bulk sample crushing, followed by solvent extraction, and then the analysis of the extract by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). This traditional analysis mixes all organic compounds in the sample regardless of their origins, with a loss of information on the spatial distribution of organic molecules within the sample. These shortcomings can be overcome using the chemical mapping of intact samples. Spectroscopic techniques such as UV fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) are among those elemental and molecular mapping techniques. This study employed femtosecond (fs) laser ablation combined with single-photon ionization, a method called fs-laser desorption postionization mass spectrometry (fs-LDPI-MS). In this work, a pulsed ~75 fs, 800 nm laser was used to ablate the geological sample, which was then photoionized after a few microseconds by a pulsed 7.9 eV vacuum ultraviolet laser. An organic carbon-rich geological sample was used for this study to map hydrocarbon biomarkers in sediments that were previously studied by GC–MS. The petrography of this sample was examined by optical and fluorescence microscopy. It is demonstrated here that fs-LDPI-MS combined with petrography for multimodal imaging can expose buried compounds within the sample via in situ layer removal. When used in conjunction with traditional organic geochemical analysis, this method has the potential to determine the spatial distribution of organic biomarkers in geological material. Finally, fs-LDPI-MS imaging data are compared with ToF-SIMS imaging that is commonly used for such studies.

Cyber-Informed Engineering Requirements Framework Use Cases

The requirement analysis use case effort leverages the Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) requirements framework to examine two real-world scenarios: Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installation at the Flatirons Campus, NLR; SCADA improvement program. This work evaluates the existing requirements for each use case, applies the CIE requirements framework, and assesses the benefits and enhancements gained compared to the current requirements. The results will advance CIE from concept to practical application by identifying key opportunities for integrating CIE principles into established engineering workflows during the requirements phase.

Sierra/SD - Theory Manual

Sierra/SD provides a massively parallel implementation of structural dynamics finite element analysis, required for high fidelity, validated models used in modal, vibration, static and shock analysis of structural systems. This manual describes the theory behind many of the constructs in Sierra/SD. For a more detailed description of how to use Sierra/SD, we refer the reader to User’s Manual. Many of the constructs in Sierra/SD are pulled directly from published material. Where possible, these materials are referenced herein. However, certain functions in Sierra/SD are specific to our implementation. We try to be far more complete in those areas. The theory manual was developed from several sources including general notes, a programmer_notes manual, the user’s notes and of course the material in the open literature.
