Method for forming single phase, single crystalline 2122 BCSCO superconductor thin films by liquid phase epitaxy

A substantially single phase, single crystalline, highly epitaxial film of Bi.sub.2 CaSr.sub.2 Cu.sub.2 O.sub.8 superconductor which has a T.sub.c (zero resistance) of 83 K is provided on a lattice-matched substrate with no intergrowth. This film is produced by a Liquid Phase Epitaxy method which includes the steps of forming a dilute supercooled molten solution of a single phase superconducting mixture of oxides of Bi, Ca, Sr, and Cu having an atomic ratio of about 2:1:2:2 in a nonreactive flux such as KCl, introducing the substrate, e.g., NdGaO.sub.3, into the molten solution at 850.degree. C., cooling the solution from 850.degree. C. to 830.degree. C. to grow the film and rapidly cooling the substrate to room temperature to maintain the desired single phase, single crystalline film structure.

A Simple Space Vector Modulation of High-Frequency AC Linked Three-Phase-to-Single-Phase/DC Converter

High frequency (HF) ac linked converter functions well to interface between buses with different voltage types. Using a three-phase-to-single-phase matrix converter, a single-phase cyclo converter, and a HF transformer, we can compose a HF ac linked converter to interface between three-phase ac grids and single-phase ac or dc distributed generations (DGs). In this paper, a novel space vector modulation (SVM) method is proposed for such kind of converter. The proposed SVM method converts the mains three-phase ac voltage to a HF ac voltage at the primary side of transformer, and then unfolds the HF ac voltage to a single-phase ac or dc voltage at the secondary side of transformer. Without need to compute separate switching signals for the primary and secondary converters and then coordinate their operations elaborately, the proposed SVM method can be easily implemented by incorporating the HF chopping into the SVM of traditional indirect matrix converter. Therefore, no complicated duty cycle computation or elaborate switching states combination is required. Simulation and hardware-in-loop implementation demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Interoperability between Three-Phase and Single-Phase WPT Systems

This paper presents an analysis and optimal position alignments of the transmitting and receiving couplers for achieving interoperability between a three-phase and a single-phase inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) system. In addition, single-phase operation modes for the six-switch three-phase inverter are identified for maximal power transfer from the three-phase transmitter pad to the single-phase receiver pad. Simulation results are included to show the power transfer capability between a 50 kW three-phase and an 11 kW double-D or circular single-phase WPT system at various alignment positions of the couplers.

Volume IV. The DUNE far detector single-phase technology

The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and whether protons eventually decay -- these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our universe, its current state, and its eventual fate. DUNE is an international world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions as it searches for leptonic charge-parity symmetry violation, stands ready to capture supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. Central to achieving DUNE's physics program is a far detector that combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with sub-centimeter spatial resolution in its ability to image those events, allowing identification of the physics signatures among the numerous backgrounds. In the single-phase liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, ionization charges drift horizontally in the liquid argon under the influence of an electric field towards a vertical anode, where they are read out with fine granularity. A photon detection system supplements the TPC, directly enhancing physics capabilities for all three DUNE physics drivers and opening up prospects for further physics explorations. The DUNE far detector technical design report (TDR) describes the DUNE physics program and the technical designs of the single- and dual-phase DUNE liquid argon TPC far detector modules. Volume IV presents an overview of the basic operating principles of a single-phase LArTPC, followed by a description of the DUNE implementation. Each of the subsystems is described in detail, connecting the high-level design requirements and decisions to the overriding physics goals of DUNE.

Volatilized Molten Salts: An Alternative Avenue for Synthesizing Single-Phase Perovskites

Single phase La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3 (LSM) and core-shell La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3 (LSCF)-LSM have been synthesized using a volatilized mol-ten salt synthesis (vMSS) method for the first time with a LiCl-KCl eutectic. While deleterious to LSM formation when the MSS takes place in the liquid phase, LiCl-KCl eutectic successfully facilitates LSM formation when volatilized. Specifically, KCl evaporates before LiCl and promotes formation of LSM via the gaseous phase. As time progresses, LiCl volatilizes and contributes negatively to Sr retention in the perovskite phase in accordance with Lux-Flood chemistry and to product phase purity. The vMSS is therefore a way to obviate the more immediate restrictions of Lux-Flood chemistry in the liquid phase. LiCl-KCl eutectic can also be used to successfully synthesis core-shell LSCF-LSM nanoparticles in times as short as 1 hour at 600 °C. These results demonstrate the surprising versatility and flexibility of the MSS method to synthesize numerous potential energy relevant materials with greater ease than previously thought.

A Unified Off-Board Charger for Three-Phase Inductive and Single-Phase Conductive EV Charging

This paper presents a unified off-board charger integrating a three-phase inductive power transfer (IPT) system and a single-phase conductive (plug-in) charger for electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed charger shares a high-frequency inverter and an integrated magnetic structure that enables three operating modes: conductive charging, inductive charging, and simultaneous charging. The transmitter coils for the three-phase IPT and the high-frequency transformer windings for the conductive charger are arranged on a common ferrite pad while maintaining magnetic decoupling between the two power transfer paths. The proposed unified architecture effectively increases charger utilization and power density without a proportional increase in cost, weight, or volume. Finite-element analysis using Ansys Maxwell confirms negligible coupling between the inductive and conductive coils, and the extracted parameters are employed in PLECS simulations to verify the independent operation of each charging mode.

Large-Signal Stability of Phase-Balanced Equilibria in Single-Phase Grid-Forming Inverter Systems

This article explores the setup where large numbers of single-phase grid-forming inverters with droop control across distribution networks self-organize into a stable and balanced system with 120° phase offsets across aggregates in the absence of balanced three-phase generating resources or external communication. A suite of circuit- and system-theoretic notions are leveraged to derive a dynamical model for phase-angle differences across aggregates of inverters connected in the three phases. Focusing on this model, large-signal stability is established and the region of attraction of the phase-balanced equilibria is determined with the aid of a Lyapunov function. Experimental validation for a bench-top prototype network is included to support the analytical developments. Altogether, the effort supports the vision of facilitating balanced operation of distribution networks with grid-forming inverters during service disruptions at the bulk transmission network.

Single phase inverter for a three phase power generation and distribution system

A breadboard design of a single-phase inverter with sinusoidal output voltage for a three-phase power generation and distribution system was developed. The three-phase system consists of three single-phase inverters, whose output voltages are connected in a delta configuration. Upon failure of one inverter the two remaining inverters will continue to deliver three-phase power. Parallel redundancy as offered by two three-phase inverters is substituted by one three-phase inverter assembly with high savings in volume, weight, components count and complexity, and a considerable increase in reliability. The following requirements must be met: (1) Each single-phase, current-fed inverter must be capable of being synchronized to a three-phase reference system such that its output voltage remains phaselocked to its respective reference voltage. (2) Each single-phase, current-fed inverter must be capable of accepting leading and lagging power factors over a range from -0.7 through 1 to +0.7.

Liquid Phase Deposition of Single-Phase Alpha-Copper-Indium-Diselenide

The success of exploratory missions in outer space often depends on a highly efficient renewable energy supply, as provided by solar cells. Since future missions will demand large aggregates of solar cells, and space flight is expensive, the solar cells must furthermore be available at low costs and have a long lifetime and high resistance against structural damage introduced by irradiation with high energy electrons and protons. The photovoltaic materials that are presently available only partly fulfill all these requirements. Therefore, we propose to explore a new method for fabricating thin-films for cost-efficient solar cells with very high specific power, high irradiation resistance and long lifetime based on the alpha-phase of the Cu-In-Se system "alpha-CIS."

Liquid-Phase Deposition of Single-Phase Alpha-Copper-Indium-Diselenide

The success of exploratory missions in outer space often depends on a highly efficient renewable energy supply, as provided by solar cells. Figure 1 shows a well-known example: The robotic vehicle "Rover," constructed for NASA s "Mars Pathfinder" mission. The solar cells for such applications not only need to have high conversion efficiency, but must possess a high specific power, thus a high power output per unit mass. Since future missions will demand for large aggregates of solar cells and space flights are expensive, the solar cells must furthermore be available at low costs (per unit power output) and - very important in outer space - have a long lifetime and a high resistance against structural damage introduced by irradiation with high-energy electrons and protons.

Performance Evaluation of a Single-Phase Grid-Forming Inverter Through Hardware Experiments: Preprint

Existing state-of-the-art of single-phase grid-forming (GFM) inverter are primarily focused on electromagnetic transient simulation, and there are very few works performing hardware test, and there is no clear understanding how the single-phase GFM inverter should behave from a hardware perspective. Therefore, this paper addresses the gap by performing hardware experiment to evaluate the performance of a single-phase GFM hardware inverter. We enrich the existing GFM testing protocols by investigating transient performance of GFM inverters under different grid dynamic events, and quantifiable performance metrics are made to have a common understanding of expected performance of single-phase GFM inverters. A commercial single-phase GFM inverter is used to verify the test protocols and understand the inverter's performance and functionalities.

Validation of SAS4A/SASSYS-1 for Steady-State Single-Phase Natural Circulation

The development of numerical software for engineering applications requires the validation of the code against experimental benchmark datasets. To support the validation of SAS4A/SASSYS-1 in simulating the single-phase natural circulation within nuclear reactor systems, high-precision steady-state experiments are performed to capture single-phase natural circulation phenomena on an existing scaled facility with comprehensive instrumentation. Forced convection tests are designed precisely capturing the facility’s critical thermal-hydraulic parameters required for one-dimensional modeling, and a comprehensive single-phase natural circulation dataset is obtained with well-documented experimental uncertainty and facility description. Analysis and discussion based on the finalized dataset confirm the dataset’s ability in capturing dominant phenomena and address important physical interpretation of parameters. The dataset reported in this project provides a valuable benchmark resource for the validation of system analysis codes under single-phase natural circulation inside nuclear reactors. Validation of SAS4A/SASSYS-1 is then performed against the obtained benchmark dataset to confirm the capability of its physics model in simulating the steady-state single-phase natural circulation. The experimental facility is modeled in the candidate code. Solution verification is performed using Richardson-extrapolation-based estimators to quantify and restrict numerical errors from discretization. Numerical uncertainty originating from finite maximum pseudo-transient time is also quantified and restricted. Input uncertainty provided by the benchmark dataset is forward propagated through the candidate code, directly quantifying the simulation output in a Monte Carlo approach. The composition of the output uncertainty is further determined by the estimators of Sobol’ indices through a variance-based sensitivity analysis. With uncertainty quantified for each individual condition, detailed comparison between the simulation results and experimental data is performed covering the whole dataset, which shows consistent agreement for all important quantities. The validation activity reported in this project demonstrates that SAS4A/SASSYS-1 can predict the primary parameters with satisfactorily accuracy under steady-state single-phase natural circulation.
